The villagers, utterly unable to resist, could only flee for their lives while the werewolves relentlessly hunted them down. A thatched cottage at the edge of the village was already ablaze, undoubtedly set on fire by the werewolves.
Aya saw an old man kneeling on the ground, repeatedly kowtowing to a werewolf. But the werewolf merely howled at the sky, then raised the machete in its hand and brought it down on the villager's head.
A man charged forward with a woodcutting axe, but before he could even touch his opponent, his throat was torn open by a claw.
A girl had been cornered. She held back her tears, refusing to cry, as two werewolves stood beside her and slowly tore apart her clothes with their claws. Their sharp talons left streaks of red across her skin.
Something deep in her heart trembled faintly, but the feeling was too slight and too clear. It should not have been enough to change Aya's judgment.
But why? Why did she feel so uneasy?
The villagers' slaughter was not her fault. Even if she did not watch, their fate would not change.
There was no reason to save them. That was still an indisputable fact.
But perhaps there was value in saving them. The sudden thought made Aya's eyes light up.
"Camellia, if I told you to kill those werewolves, would you do it?" Aya asked.
"Yes." The answer came without the slightest hesitation, making Aya raise an eyebrow.
"By blood, I have nothing to do with werewolves. I am not a wolf, only a Heavenly Wolf variant of a Primordial Beast. My bloodline belongs to Mother."
"And by identity, my only identity is as Mother's daughter and attendant. Mother's will is my wish, and Mother's command is my direction." Her response was immediate, neither servile nor overbearing. It even made Aya, who had once doubted Camellia and Preya's loyalty, feel a trace of shame.
"If we deal with humans, exchanging information and gathering intelligence should be easier. And now is the best time to win their favor," Aya said. "I am also somewhat interested in the civilization created by the humans of this world."
"Yes, I understand." Camellia nodded.
"Then it is decided." Aya stood up. "Camellia, prepare yourself in full gear. Preya, stay here. If anything unusual happens, abandon this place immediately and use reverse summoning to withdraw to the Temple of Life."

Several shadows flew away from beneath Aya's feet.
"As a precaution, I have already summoned and deployed combat units skilled in concealment." Aya took a silver half-mask from her item inventory and put it on.
"Consider it repayment for the bread." With that, Aya activated teleportation magic.
A beautiful figure suddenly appeared in a corner of the battlefield.
No one had used teleportation interference. That was the first thing worth being thankful for. It seemed this massacre was not a trap, so the most dangerous possibility had already been ruled out.
Aya placed a hand on the girl's shoulder—her clothes had nearly been torn to shreds, leaving only an undergarment. The girl also froze at Aya's sudden appearance.
Aya's cold gaze swept over the werewolves before her. Perhaps they were too shocked, but the werewolves made no response.
Three seconds later, one of them muttered.
"So big..."
[Life Drain] activated.
This spell forcibly absorbed the target's life force. It was a powerful eighth-rank spell, and its most useful feature was that it could reveal information about the target's remaining health.
