The Slane Theocracy and the Re-Estize Kingdom shared several border regions. One of them was divided by a river—the very river before them.

Crossing this bridge would bring them into the Theocracy's territory.

The carriage stopped before the bridge. It was a relatively small stone bridge, barely wide enough for two carriages to pass side by side.

On the far side stood two Theocracy watchposts. There was also one on the Kingdom's side, but it was visibly dilapidated and empty. Aside from that, there were no other security measures on this side.

In other words, if the Theocracy invaded the Kingdom from here, they could travel along the main road all the way to the nearest city before the Kingdom noticed.

"Despite being a border, there aren't even any troops stationed here? Or does the Kingdom no longer have the spare resources for such things... No, this watchpost has been abandoned for a long time. That means there haven't been any troops stationed here for quite some time."

Ainz inspected the watchpost. Vines and other plants had already crept all over it, making it clear that it had gone unused for ages.

Afterward, Ainz began examining the bridge.

"Naberal, looking at this border between the Kingdom and the Theocracy, what did you notice?"

"The Kingdom truly is beyond saving. The Theocracy, on the other hand, seems somewhat capable. The difference between them is probably like that between mosquito larvae and hydras," Naberal concluded simply.

Well said. The problem was, what were mosquito larvae and hydras...?

Ainz ignored that minor issue and quietly asked, "Other than that?"

Naberal was stumped, unable to think of anything else worth noting.

"Look at that bridge." Ainz pointed at the bridge before them.
