Beastmaster Tower had many floors and occupied an enormous area.
This time, Chen Wei did not ask the receptionist for directions. Instead, he took Color Spirit and wandered through the tower's floors.
He had been curious about the Beastmaster Association for a long time. Last time, however, he had been busy training with Old Huang and had not been able to properly explore the building.
Chen Wei first arrived on the fifth floor, which housed the Beastmaster Association's mission hall.
The Beastmaster Association occasionally issued bounty missions, and beastmasters could earn generous rewards by completing them.
Of course, not every mission with a high Association bounty could be handled by beastmasters. Every year, there were always a few troublesome missions left behind.
These difficult missions piled up and remained hanging in the mission hall year after year, yet there were always very few beastmasters who dared step forward to accept them.
As for the simpler training missions, they were somewhat in short supply. Though the Star Coin rewards were meager, a large batch of students who had recently contracted their initial pets had appeared at just the right time.
Whether there was money in it or not, the students who had just become beginner beastmasters did not care.
Their blood was boiling, and they were eager to prove themselves. They only wanted to demonstrate their abilities through Beastmaster Association missions.
So, despite having a skill of his own, Chen Wei had no intention of accepting missions from the Beastmaster Association to earn money. The competition was simply too cutthroat!
Looking at the sea of people packed into the clean, brightly lit hall, with waves of clamor rising around him from time to time, Chen Wei even saw some beastmasters release their small pets in an attempt to prove their strength just to secure a mission.
"Wow, there are so many people. Good thing I only came to watch the excitement."
Seeing the crowd lined up in endless queues, Chen Wei sighed in relief.
Afterward, Chen Wei made a round outside the spacious hall, and his attention was drawn to the rare pets beside some of the beastmasters.
He saw a Soaring Cloud Green Cicada lying atop the head of a handsome young man. It was a high-grade extraordinary wood-element pet rarely seen in Water Mountain City.
That young man's initial pet was a Soaring Cloud Green Cicada, which meant he was a traveler from another city. Chen Wei simply did not know why he had come to remote Water Mountain City.
"Woof, woof."
A deep, vigorous growl instantly caught Chen Wei's attention. There was actually a beastmaster bold enough to release such a medium-to-large pet in the mission hall—was he not afraid of being fined by the Association staff?
Surprised, he looked toward the source of the sound.
There, an uncle wearing a T-shirt and slippers was stroking a large mastiff that gleamed with a purple metallic luster all over its body.
It was a Purple Steel Thunder Mastiff with a top elite racial grade.
This uncle had mines at home—this was Chen Wei's first impression.
Pets like Purple Steel Thunder Mastiffs were similar to Earth Wolf Hounds, except Earth Wolf Hounds usually ate dirt, while this thing ate source steel.
Unlike ordinary steel, source steel was an artificially manufactured and synthesized product. It contained a small amount of source power, was exceptionally sturdy, and could transmit source energy, making it extremely valuable.
Therefore, a pet that needed to eat several bars of source steel per meal was incredibly expensive to raise. How could anyone without mines at home afford one?
Looking at the diverse pets nearby, Chen Wei could not help shaking his head. He had not expected Water Mountain City to have so many wealthy beastmasters hiding in plain sight.
"Too bad I'm not one of them," Chen Wei silently lamented.
After his brief sighing, Chen Wei, whose attention had been drawn away by the many pets, finally remembered why he had come to the Beastmaster Association today.
He hurriedly followed the signs in the hall to the tower's sixth floor.
The sixth floor was the professional battle venue the Beastmaster Association specifically provided for its many beastmasters.
Chen Wei had just arrived on the sixth floor and had not even taken a few steps when a bright-eyed, white-toothed staff member came forward and asked, "Hello, this is the battle venue. How may I help you?"
The girl's excessive enthusiasm made Chen Wei somewhat uncomfortable. He casually replied, "I'd like to battle. Are there any vacant arenas?"
She nodded with a smile. "Not at the moment, but if you sit and wait for a little while, a battle platform will open up soon."
Chen Wei said, "All right."
"May I ask whether you have an opponent arranged? If not, we can provide a sparring partner whose strength is similar to yours."
"No. How much would it cost if you arrange a sparring partner?"
"Only 1,000 Star Coins per hour. If you book now, there's a huge discount—just 688 Star Coins."
The girl wore a standard smile.
688 Star Coins?
Chen Wei froze upon hearing the price. It was not cheap; one of his meals only cost 50 Star Coins.
Even Color Spirit's food cost 2,000 Star Coins a day, with one Snow Lotus Pill each day.
"Eh!"
Chen Wei gave a soft cry. Once he calculated it like that, it suddenly did not seem so expensive anymore. The price was barely acceptable.
"Do I need to pay extra for the pet's medical expenses after the match?"
Chen Wei continued asking. If he could save on those medical costs, he would book it immediately.
"Of course. And any damage done to the venue during battle will be repaired at our expense." The girl nodded as though it were only natural.
Not to mention that the Association only provided battle venues for beastmasters below the elite level, pets below the third tier were not even qualified to damage the venue.
She did not believe that a youth as young as the one before her could possess a pet above the third tier.
"Then please help me book a sparring partner with a pet at Juvenile Level 10," Chen Wei said readily.
"Certainly, this way, please."
Led by her, Chen Wei arrived at a grand hall. Quite a few Beastmasters were already seated inside, waiting for their battles.
"Please wait a moment. Once a sparring attendant becomes available, the large screen above the hall will notify you of the arena number."
A moment later, the girl handed him a tablet. "Hello, this is part of the association's standard procedure. There's also some information that you'll need to fill out personally."
Chen Wei glanced through it. They were all simple questions about pet beast information, so he quickly completed them.
After returning the tablet to the girl, he asked curiously, "Does the full hour have to be used up?"
"Yes."
The girl gave him a surprised look. "If you're confident, you could try the Apprentice Arena Champion Challenge we've been holding recently."
"As long as you can defeat ten challengers in a row in the arena, you'll receive our special gift package."
Chen Wei's interest was immediately piqued. "When does this competition start, and what are the requirements?"
It had not been long since he and Color Spirit finished their grueling training. They happened to need plenty of battles to increase their strength, and if they were lucky, they might even win a prize.
She smiled. "Since you've already purchased a sparring package here, you automatically qualify to participate. The competition will be held next Monday at eight in the morning, at the battle venue in Zone A."
The girl added, "This competition only accepts juvenile-level pet beasts. Sir, you can give it a try. If you wish to participate, I can register you right now."
Chen Wei nodded with great interest. "Thank you. Please sign me up."
Chen Wei found this Apprentice Arena Champion Challenge quite interesting.
Whoever had come up with the event was a real genius—or perhaps a madman. They had actually created the spectacle of one against ten.
