"Practical combat assessments change according to the strength of your beast."
"For example, my Lightning Marten was at Level Ten of the Juvenile Stage, with a high extraordinary racial grade. So in the first battle, it faced a lower first-order, medium special-grade beast: a Black-Web Buffalo."
"After defeating that beast, it would then face two Black-Web Buffalos. You could rest for ten minutes after every victory, but the number of opponents would increase each round, and the difficulty would multiply."
"Even with the advantage of elemental restraint back then, I still fell in the fourth round of testing. Facing the successive onslaught of four high-tier beasts, my initial beast, the Soaring Wind Thunder Tiger, couldn't even defeat a single one."
As she spoke, a faint trace of regret appeared on Ning Yi's delicate face.
Even now, whenever she recalled that assessment, she still felt unwilling to accept it. Could any student really pass such an outrageous test completely?!
Chen Wei was rather startled as well, muttering inwardly, Fighting above one's rank is one thing. After all, a low-level Beast Master who can't defeat the strong while weak can hardly be called a genius. But adding a gauntlet battle on top of fighting above one's rank—isn't that a little absurd?!
He furrowed his brows slightly, steadied the shock in his heart, and continued asking Ning Yi, "How many rounds are there in a test like this?"
"There's no set number of rounds. I only lasted until the fourth round. From what I can tell, if you want to get into one of the Big Five, you'll need to pass at least the fourth round of testing!"
A bitter smile appeared on Ning Yi's lips.
She added, "According to the proctor's explanation, there's no upper limit to this combat test. The more rounds you pass, the higher the school's evaluation of you will be."
"When the time comes, you just need to choose the university you like and take the test there. No matter which university you take your Beast Master assessment at, once the test is complete, your results will be synchronized to every university's admissions database."
"Unfortunately, with my result of only passing the third round, I could barely meet Thunderclap Academy's admission standards."
"But you might really be able to do it. Water Mountain City hasn't produced a Beast Master admitted into the Big Five in many years!"
Ning Yi stared fixedly at him, faint expectations shining in her clear eyes.
"Ah... I'll work hard." Chen Wei froze slightly, then turned his head a little and avoided her gaze.
Ning Yi's fervent stare was a little too much for him to bear. Chen Wei was slow to warm up, and he truly wasn't good at communicating with someone as socially outgoing as Ning Yi.
How interesting. The contrast between how reserved he is now and how hot-blooded he was during battle is so huge. He's practically two different people.
Seeing Chen Wei suddenly become somewhat restrained, Ning Yi covered her smiling rosy lips with the back of her hand, seemingly finding a bit of amusement in it.
"Hello, your Lightning Marten has fully recovered."
A voice suddenly rang out, interrupting Ning Yi's thoughts of teasing Chen Wei.
The medic handed the beast he held in both hands over to Ning Yi.
"Alright, thank you."
After taking the Lightning Marten, Ning Yi's cheeks immediately flushed red again. Then, she eagerly challenged Chen Wei, "Since we still have some time, shall we continue our battle?"
"Sure."
Chen Wei replied with a smile. This straightforward and sexy female Beast Master before him was a rare and outstanding opponent.
A moment later, the battle between their beasts began once more.
Although Water Mountain City was only a small third-tier city within Donghua Kingdom, Beast Master culture still flourished through every street and alley of the city.
Walking along the bustling streets, Chen Wei occasionally saw quite a few Beast Masters playing with their own beasts.
After their battle, Ning Yi learned that the Cold Jade Snake possessed the third-order skill Telekinesis, and specifically introduced him to a dojo that taught mental meditation methods for beasts.
Chen Wei knew that an excellent beast meditation method could deeply develop the potential within psychic-type beasts. However, since his pockets were empty, he had no intention of buying one from the Beast Master marketplace.
After all, low-level meditation methods were terribly inefficient. His beast had no need for them, and their effects were not even as good as Color Spirit directly training its Telekinesis skill.
As for high-level beast meditation methods, they often started at tens of millions of Star Coins. They might not even be available for purchase, being closely guarded secrets passed down by many Beast Masters.
The exorbitant prices and scarcity of high-level meditation methods had made Chen Wei give up on the idea of having Color Spirit learn one.
What difference did it make what it learned? Color Spirit could take the ice-element path too; it didn't necessarily have to stubbornly pursue the psychic path.
But when he heard that the Starlight Dojo Ning Yi recommended taught advanced meditation methods for free, Chen Wei was immediately interested.
Whether the news was true or false, he had to go take a look at that dojo.
Following the map on his phone, Chen Wei passed through several crowded and bustling streets.
"The Starlight Dojo should be around here. Why can't I see it?"
He stood where he was, his eyes sweeping over the surrounding buildings as he muttered to himself.
After slowly circling the area once more, Chen Wei finally discovered a somewhat rundown dojo.
The building's design was rather unique, but the signboard hanging above its entrance had faded somewhat. Of the four large characters reading "Starlight Dojo," the two dots above the character for "light" had already disappeared.
Chen Wei looked hesitantly at the dilapidated dojo in the distance. He then took out his phone, snapped a picture, and sent it to Ning Yi.
He followed up by asking, "Is this the Starlight Dojo you mentioned?"
His phone buzzed twice.
Chen Wei lowered his head and looked at her QChat reply.
"Yeah, this is the dojo run by my best friend's family."
"Alright."
Chen Wei replied to Ning Yi's message, then glanced at the dojo's signboard a few more times before striding straight through the entrance.
Upon entering the dojo, Chen Wei found that only a petite figure with a head of silver hair was seated with her back to him in the wooden hall.
As if she had heard Chen Wei's footsteps, the girl opened her eyes, ending her meditation. She rose to her feet and looked in surprise toward the source of the sound.
It had been a long time since any student had come to visit her dojo.
The girl's startled gaze happened to meet Chen Wei's curious eyes.
As Chen Wei watched the silver-haired girl in the distance rise and turn around, his eyes were filled with amazement.
It was the first time he had ever seen, in real life, a beautiful girl who seemed as though she had stepped straight out of a manga.
The girl before him appeared to be around sixteen. Her loose silver hair cascaded like a waterfall all the way down to her slender waist.
Beneath that striking silver hair was an exquisite, captivating face. Slender willow-leaf brows, clear and luminous eyes, soft rosy lips, and fair skin so delicate it seemed it could break at a touch all accentuated her icy skin and jade-like bones.
She wore a clean, loose-fitting white long-sleeved shirt. Though somewhat petite, she possessed an air of refined elegance and aloof coolness.
"Hello, may I ask who you are?"
A cool yet gentle voice suddenly rang out beside Chen Wei's ear as the girl asked in confusion.
