Just as Vaughn had expected, the town had few inhabitants. As he and Dumbledore ventured deeper into it, they saw only the occasional elderly person or child.
Under the effects of the Muggle-Repelling Charm, however, those people ignored them completely.
"They look exhausted. What happened here?" Vaughn felt that something was off about those elderly people and children.
Dumbledore fell silent for a moment before saying slowly, "The werewolves of Greyback's Army nearly destroyed everything here. But these people were lucky. Akinbade happened to arrive in time to avert a disaster."
"Still, many people died. Most of them were young adults."
Vaughn frowned. Dumbledore had just said that Akinbade had arrived in Ireland only after Vaughn had dealt with Greyback.
That meant the incident in this town had happened after Greyback's death, too.
That came as a surprise to Vaughn. He had thought the Werewolf Legion would fall apart once Greyback died, but those creatures had remained as savage as ever.
Perhaps their thinking had become set in stone, or perhaps they had long since surrendered themselves to brutality. It seemed that once he returned, he would have to make C step up its efforts to wipe out the remnants of the Werewolf Legion.
"This isn't your fault, my dear. At least you killed Greyback."
Seeing Vaughn's silence, Dumbledore assumed he felt guilty. Vaughn gave him a strange look. "Of course it isn't my fault. The Werewolf Legion brings death and slaughter every full moon, and C's operations have already greatly reduced those tragedies."
"And-Albus, I think I need to correct you. C's Executive Council wizards executed Greyback when he tried to resist during an operation. I did not kill him."
"What you're saying could give people the wrong idea. They might even think I'm a murderer-"
Dumbledore was speechless.
