Vaughan did not see Hagrid's letter until evening.
At the time, he was planning out the time ahead, especially his research into and use of the Philosopher's Stone—
These past few days, he had spent nearly all his free time redesigning the Philosopher's Stone's protective mechanisms. To that end, he had specifically applied to Dumbledore for an extension on his loan of the Philosopher's Stone.
It had been extended from seven days to a month.
The Philosopher's Stone was in his hands now, and Dumbledore still needed him to design the mechanisms. What else could Dumbledore say? Of course, he could only agree.
Still, Vaughan was not deliberately trying to hold on to it and refuse to return it. He genuinely had no time to study it.
For a while before this, he had met with Dumbledore almost every day to draw up blueprints for new mechanisms around the Philosopher's Stone—Vaughan dictated while Dumbledore drew. That was probably the greatest use of an old man who had lived for over a hundred years: he knew a little bit of everything.
Only today had work finally begun over there. To keep Quirrell and that plug-in guy from growing suspicious, Dumbledore had reassigned the project to the professors.
It was no longer suitable for Vaughan to appear over there, so he finally had time to deal with his own affairs.
"System!"
At his call, the system panel appeared in his field of vision:
