Ch. 21Potions Class (Part One)

Vaughan settled into his first week of Hogwarts classes, earning points for Slytherin and drawing the attention of students from every House. As Potions class began, Professor Snape fixed his hostile attention on Harry.

  • Professor Flitwick praised Vaughan's Levitation Charm, promised him a place in the Charms Club in third year, and awarded Slytherin twenty points.
  • Vaughan earned points in his other classes, including Herbology and Defense Against the Dark Arts, while he worried about the quest to help Slytherin win the House Cup.
  • Vaughan's visits to every House became a spectacle, and Ron complained about him while Hermione scolded Ron for gossiping.
  • Hermione sat with Vaughan in Potions class, where their conversation made her smile.
  • Professor Snape confronted Harry in the dungeon classroom, addressing him in a grim, icy voice.

Ch. 22Potion Class (Part 2)

Snape humiliated Harry during the first Potions lesson while singling him out for questions and criticism. Vaughan impressed the class with his skill and explained to Hermione that potion-making worked like a ritual for constructing a spell.

  • Snape called Harry and Vaughan famous figures, then asked Harry a Potions question he could not answer.
  • Harry praised Hermione’s knowledge and Vaughan’s Potions accomplishments, prompting Snape to mock Harry and deduct two points from Gryffindor.
  • Snape repeatedly criticized Harry and nearby students during the lecture and practical exercise while silently observing Vaughan’s careful brewing.
  • Vaughan told Hermione that Potions relied on ritualistic actions and mysticism rather than the precise measurements of Muggle chemistry.

Ch. 23Improved Potion

Vaughn demonstrated his improved boil-curing potion to Hermione and Snape, using magic to extract ingredient properties and omit porcupine quills. After helping Neville and Seamus in class, Vaughn watched Harry invite Ron to visit Hagrid, while Ron’s remarks drove Hermione away.

  • Vaughn showed Hermione how he used magic to extract ingredient properties and brew a clear blue boil-curing potion without porcupine quills.
  • Snape inspected Vaughn’s potion, praised the improvement, awarded Slytherin ten points, and told Vaughn and Hermione to help Neville and Seamus.
  • Vaughn helped Neville follow the textbook, then stopped Seamus’s porcupine quills from falling into a hot cauldron and causing an explosion.
  • Harry told Ron he wanted to partner with Vaughn in the next Potions class, and Ron called him a traitor.
  • Harry suggested visiting Hagrid the next day, but Ron complained about Hermione, who walked away in anger.

Ch. 24Spy

Vaughan persuaded Snape to teach him advanced Potions and comforted Hermione after her argument with Harry and Ron. He asked her to secretly keep watch on the boys, then left to focus on his own studies and strength.

  • Vaughan secured Snape's promise to meet him on Sunday and answer his Potions questions.
  • Vaughan found Hermione by the Black Lake and offered her chocolate after noticing she was upset.
  • Hermione told Vaughan that Ron had insulted her and asked whether she was annoying; Vaughan admitted she could be, but said he valued her honesty.
  • Vaughan asked Hermione to forgive Ron and keep an eye on Harry and Ron because he suspected Dumbledore was testing Harry and things might go wrong.
  • Vaughan called Hermione his spy and left with Fruit Tea, intent on studying Potions and gaining strength rather than following Harry around.

Ch. 25Keeping Secrets and Potions Research

Harry learned that Hagrid had taken the contents of Gringotts vault 713, and Vaughn realized the item was likely the Philosopher’s Stone. After the system offered a quest to obtain it, Vaughn visited Snape to demonstrate his potion-making method and earned an invitation to keep studying in Snape’s office.

  • Harry connected the Gringotts robbery to the package Hagrid had taken from vault 713, and Ron and Hermione promised to keep the secret.
  • Vaughn studied the Philosopher’s Stone, considered how difficult it would be to find, and received a system quest to obtain it for an Alchemy Talent reward.
  • Vaughn went to Snape’s office and admired the potions and ingredients Snape had selected for him to study.
  • Snape watched Vaughn brew Cure for Boils and questioned him about how he extracted and infused magic into the ingredients.
  • Snape agreed to try Vaughn’s method as their potion-making discussion continued.

Ch. 26Teaching the Magic Extraction Method

Vaughan taught Snape the Magic Extraction Method, and Snape recognized its potential despite its difficulty. Snape agreed to teach Vaughan advanced spells, while Vaughan returned to Ravenclaw that night to socialize with the students.

  • Vaughan explained how he developed the Magic Extraction Method, and Snape tried it on a potion and successfully separated several ingredients’ properties.
  • Snape concluded that the method required talent in Potions and Transfiguration as well as experience with ingredients, but agreed it was valuable.
  • Vaughan asked Snape for access to more ingredients, Scarpin’s Revelaspell, and instruction in advanced spells so he could develop a universal model.
  • Snape told Vaughan to come to his office the following Saturday and said Dumbledore would agree to the lessons.
  • Vaughan returned to the Slytherin common room, wondered why Dumbledore approved of his visits to other houses, then went to Ravenclaw and stayed late with the students and Fruit Tea.

Ch. 27Flight Lessons (Part One)

As Hogwarts’s first-years settled into rivalries and heavier lessons, Vaughn’s pranks made him an exception among the divided houses. During the first flying lesson, Harry and Vaughn unexpectedly proved to be the only students who could fly their brooms successfully.

  • Harry and Ron clashed with Malfoy’s trio in class, while Harry later pushed Ron to apologize to Hermione and their friendship recovered.
  • Vaughn’s spell changed the Slytherin common room entrance from “dungeon” to “seaside villa,” and Filch failed to remove the words as Fred and George mocked the Slytherins with beach posters.
  • Before flying lessons, Harry asked Vaughn for advice, and Vaughn revealed that Ron’s story about nearly hitting a Muggle airplane came from a dream after a movie.
  • At Madam Hooch’s lesson, Harry, Vaughn, and Hermione were the only first-years whose brooms responded to “Up!” on the first attempt.
  • When Madam Hooch told the class to fly, Harry and Vaughn were the only students to rise straight into the sky.

Ch. 28Flying Lessons (Part Two)

During flying lessons, Vaughan saved Neville from a fall and later helped stop Harry and Malfoy from crashing after their broomstick fight. Harry was allowed to join the Quidditch team but received detention with Malfoy, while Gryffindor lost sixty points and Slytherin lost forty.

  • Vaughan and Harry flew around the pitch, and Vaughan and Harry used spells to keep Neville from falling to the ground.
  • Malfoy mocked Neville and Harry, prompting Harry to chase Malfoy through the air toward Hogwarts Castle.
  • Harry knocked Malfoy from his broom, then caught him, but their broom began falling until Vaughan and Professor McGonagall stopped them with spells.
  • Professor McGonagall awarded Vaughan twenty points for Slytherin and reprimanded Harry and Malfoy for their dangerous fight.
  • Hermione and Ron learned that Gryffindor had lost sixty points and Slytherin had lost forty, then Harry returned with permission to join the Quidditch team and news that he and Malfoy had detention together.

Ch. 29Nighttime Wanderings (Part 1)

Harry went to serve detention with Malfoy in the trophy room while Ron and Hermione secretly followed to watch over him. Vaughn appeared with a magically restrained Peeves and befriended Mrs. Norris, leaving Ron eager to learn how he had done it.

  • Harry told Ron and Hermione that his detention with Malfoy was in the trophy room, where he hoped to see his father's Quidditch trophies.
  • Ron and Hermione followed Harry to the third floor and hid near the trophy room while Filch left Mrs. Norris guarding the entrance.
  • Vaughn surprised Ron and Hermione with Peeves tied to a rope and unable to move, and said he had befriended the poltergeist.
  • Vaughn offered Mrs. Norris dried fish, and she ate it obediently instead of alerting Filch.
  • Vaughn lifted the Silencio spell from Ron, who excitedly asked him to teach him how he had controlled Peeves and won over Mrs. Norris.

Ch. 30Nighttime Wanderings (Part 2)

Vaughan took Harry, Ron, and Hermione on a nighttime tour of Hogwarts and showed them the Room of Requirement, explaining how it appeared when someone needed a place to hide something. The group ended inside the vast room, surrounded by heaps of stored objects.

  • Vaughan soothed Mrs. Norris with dried fish and told Ron and Hermione to let Fruit Tea lead them to him after Harry finished polishing trophies.
  • Harry finished his punishment and told Ron and Hermione about finding his father’s Quidditch trophy as Fruit Tea led them to the second floor.
  • Vaughan spoke with Moaning Myrtle in the abandoned girls’ Washroom, and Hermione became curious about the ghost’s unusual abilities.
  • Vaughan led the group to the eighth floor, paced three times before a wall, and revealed the Room of Requirement.
  • Vaughan explained that the Room of Requirement shaped itself around a person’s needs and that he had summoned a hiding place.

Ch. 31The Room of Requirement

Vaughn searched the Room of Requirement for Ravenclaw's Diadem, hoping to give the Horcrux to Dumbledore and weaken Voldemort, but Harry showed no sign of sensing it. After his search stalled, Vaughn returned to Snape and borrowed advanced potion and Dark Arts books from the Restricted Section.

  • Vaughn asked Harry whether he felt anything in the Room of Requirement, but Harry felt no connection to the hidden Horcrux.
  • Vaughn revealed that he wanted to find Ravenclaw's Diadem and pass it to Dumbledore, but planned to search the clutter himself since Harry could not sense it.
  • Harry's Quidditch selection became public after he told his friends, and Fred and George spread the news, frustrating Wood and delaying the trio's plans to explore the room.
  • Vaughn returned to Snape's office and received an authorization slip to borrow books from the Restricted Section.
  • Madam Pince let Vaughn borrow Advanced Potion-Making, Magical Drafts and Potions, The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 6, and An Introduction to Dark Arts.

Ch. 32Magical Studies

After studying in the Room of Requirement for three weeks, Vaughan used his reputation points to improve Scarpin's Revelaspell and tested its ability to break down a potion. He left to begin developing potions, then met Dumbledore in the corridor, where they politely pretended their encounter was accidental.

  • Vaughan checked his system panel and realized a month had passed while he studied advanced books in the Room of Requirement.
  • He reflected on the spells and potions Snape had helped him access, including Dark magic recorded in a book from the Restricted Section.
  • Vaughan spent all 22 reputation points raising Scarpin's Revelaspell to LV2 and used it to break a Cure for Boils into its ingredients.
  • Vaughan decided to start brewing and developing potions the next day, then encountered Dumbledore outside the Room of Requirement.
  • Vaughan and Dumbledore exchanged polite small talk about the room before saying good night and parting ways.

Ch. 33Bargaining (Part 1)

Vaughn reflected on Dumbledore’s rule-bound approach and told Snape about their encounter. At the Quidditch pitch, Vaughn explained his plans to study advanced potions and develop new ones to support his lifelong Magic Extraction Method research, and Snape judged him ambitious but not arrogant.

  • Vaughn concluded that Dumbledore had tested him and decided he did not fear or hate the Headmaster because Dumbledore followed rules.
  • Vaughn told Snape that Dumbledore was a good man, and Snape took him to watch Gryffindor train in terrible weather.
  • Snape mocked the struggling Gryffindor team and asked Vaughn when he would begin refining the Magic Extraction Method.
  • Vaughn explained that he would first study advanced potions and develop new ones to identify material properties and test his theories.
  • Snape called Vaughn ignorant and fearless, then acknowledged that he was not arrogant.

Ch. 34Bargaining (Part Two)

Vaughan bargained with Snape for support and rewards in exchange for joining the Slytherin Quidditch team and challenging Harry. Later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione told Vaughan that Fluffy guarded something connected to Nicolas Flamel and asked if he recognized the name.

  • Snape asked Vaughan whether he could defeat Harry at Quidditch, and Vaughan agreed to try in exchange for potion ingredients, reduced homework, and a book on memory magic.
  • Vaughan asked Snape to replace Marcus Flint as Slytherin captain, but they could not find a suitable candidate.
  • Vaughan learned that Peeves and Mrs. Norris had chased Harry, Ron, and Hermione into the room where Fluffy guarded a trapdoor.
  • Vaughan had advised Harry to tell Hagrid that he had seen the three-headed dog, and Hagrid revealed that Fluffy guarded something related to Nicolas Flamel.
  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione asked Vaughan if he knew who Nicolas Flamel was.

Ch. 35Quidditch Tryouts

Vaughn joined the Slytherin Quidditch team as Seeker and demonstrated his flying ability during training. He caught the Golden Snitch in front of a packed crowd, leaving Harry worried about competing with him.

  • An owl delivered Vaughn a Nimbus 2000, which he said Professor Snape had given him after recruiting him as Slytherin's Seeker.
  • Ron accused Snape of trying to turn Harry and Vaughn against each other, but Harry admitted he feared losing to Vaughn and letting his team down.
  • Students from several houses gathered to watch Vaughn's first Slytherin training session, while Harry and Ron joined the crowd.
  • Captain Flint released the Golden Snitch, and Vaughn evaded the other players as he pursued it on his Nimbus 2000.
  • Vaughn caught the Golden Snitch after one minute, drawing cheers from the stands as Harry saw Wood's pale face.

Ch. 36Hagrid's Message

Vaughn continued his potion research while Harry and his friends discovered that Dumbledore had hidden the Philosopher’s Stone at Hogwarts. After Hermione and the others told Hagrid about their discovery, Hagrid asked to meet Vaughn, who agreed.

  • Wood’s despair over Slytherin’s strength led him to intensify Gryffindor’s Quidditch training, leaving Harry exhausted.
  • Vaughn told Harry that Nicolas Flamel was mentioned on a Chocolate Frog card, prompting Harry to rush off and investigate.
  • Vaughn studied aconite in Snape’s office, and Snape asked him to submit a paper on his analysis of the poisonous plant.
  • Harry, Ron, and Hermione told Vaughn they had learned the Philosopher’s Stone was hidden in Hogwarts, and Vaughn explained its connection to Nicolas Flamel.
  • Harry told Vaughn that Hagrid wanted to meet him, and Vaughn agreed to go.

Ch. 37Forbidden Forest (Part 1)

Vaughan visited Hagrid and asked him to guide him through the Forbidden Forest so he could study possible ingredients for a new potion. Hagrid agreed to a cautious daytime walk, and they entered the forest with Fruit Tea and Fang while Vaughan kept his wand ready.

  • Vaughan brought Hagrid an illustrated book about Muggle animals and reassured him that he had kept the Philosopher's Stone secret.
  • Vaughan asked Hagrid to guide him through the Forbidden Forest to help him observe magical plants and creatures for potion research.
  • Hagrid agreed to avoid dangerous areas and quickly set out with Vaughan, carrying his stone crossbow.
  • Fruit Tea chased Fang around Hagrid's hut before the cat and dog joined Vaughan and Hagrid on their walk.
  • Vaughan, Hagrid, Fruit Tea, and Fang entered the quiet, shadowy Forbidden Forest, where Vaughan kept his wand drawn.

Ch. 38Forbidden Forest (Part 2)

Vaughn accompanied Hagrid through the Forbidden Forest and learned that unicorns had recently been attacked. After detecting dark magic in a unicorn’s bloodstained soil, Vaughn collected a sample and decided to visit Headmaster Dumbledore.

  • Hagrid showed Vaughn Bowtruckles and other magical creatures while explaining their habits.
  • Vaughn asked whether creatures in the forest had been injured, and Hagrid said unicorns had been attacked.
  • Hagrid led Vaughn to a clearing where an injured unicorn had left blood a week earlier.
  • Vaughn used the Revealing Charm and found dark magic corroding the remaining magic in the unicorn blood.
  • Vaughn collected some of the soil and told Hagrid he was going to visit Headmaster Dumbledore.

Ch. 39Finding Old Dumbledore as Muscle and a Portrait

Vaughn brought Dumbledore evidence that someone had used dark magic to injure a unicorn in the Forbidden Forest, prompting Dumbledore to investigate. While Dumbledore was away, Headmaster Black tried to tempt Vaughn with forbidden knowledge before another portrait attacked him.

  • Vaughn went to Professor McGonagall and asked her to take him to Dumbledore with an important report.
  • Vaughn showed Dumbledore a bottle of unicorn blood and used the Revealing Charm to display the dark magic surrounding it.
  • Vaughn explained how he had found the injured unicorn's blood and concluded that a wizard might be seeking the Elixir of Life.
  • Dumbledore said he needed to inspect the scene and Apparated away with Fawkes.
  • Headmaster Black offered Vaughn forbidden knowledge in exchange for a favor, but another portrait rushed in and began fighting him.

Ch. 40Newt Scamander (Part 1)

Vaughn explored Dumbledore’s office and learned that a Dark wizard was seeking unicorn blood to brew an Elixir of Life. After Vaughn suggested moving the unicorn herd, Dumbledore took him to meet an old friend who could help.

  • Headmistress Weasley told Vaughn that Sirius Black’s imprisonment had driven an ancestor of the Black family portrait mad, and she warned Vaughn to be cautious with Dark magic.
  • Vaughn found Dumbledore’s Pensieve and the covered Mirror of Erised, then declined to look into the mirror and asked Dumbledore what he had seen.
  • Dumbledore told Vaughn that a powerful Dark wizard was trying to obtain unicorn blood, but that no unicorns had been killed.
  • Vaughn suggested relocating the unicorns from the Forbidden Forest, and Dumbledore agreed to seek help from an old friend.
  • Vaughn accompanied Dumbledore and Fawkes by Side-Along Apparition to meet the friend.
