When Steven woke again, he was already lying on a warm car seat.
It was a car.
The sound of the engine was so pleasant, and the smell of gasoline drifting at the tip of his nose brought a sense of joy as well. The driver was a man wearing a leather cap. He saw Steven move through the rearview mirror and greeted him.
"Awake?"
"Thank you."
After thanking him, Steven looked at the other two.
A man with thinning hair sat in the passenger seat. He nodded lightly and passed a bottle of mineral water back.
Natasha took it, twisted off the cap, and gave Steven a sip.
With that one sip, Steven immediately began gulping it down. His throat was terribly dry, and he quickly drained the entire bottle of water.
"Thank you."
He thanked them again.
Natasha said nothing, leaving the questioning to Coulson.
"You're welcome, sir. Did you run into some trouble? Lying in a place like that?"
His voice was calm and steady. Coulson was trying to probe his background.
"I—I got separated from my team. Can you drop me in a nearby city?"
Steven didn't want to face Arthur's group again. Telling a lie and leaving Egypt was the wisest choice.
But the pause in his words, the subtle shift in his expression, had already let Coulson and Natasha see through his lie.
The two exchanged a silent glance, and Coulson continued probing.
"I'm afraid that won't work, sir. The place we're headed is the legendary city of Hamunaptra. If you want to go to a city, we'd have to turn back!"
Sure enough, after hearing Coulson's words, Steven's face turned very ugly.
