Background / History

Founding legacy and decline

Hiruzen Sarutobi regards Konoha as the result of Hashirama Senju's efforts and a responsibility passed to him by his teacher, Tobirama Senju. He considers the Hokage unable to neglect village affairs, particularly when clan relations could deteriorate into another great war 27.

Konoha ended several prior Ninja World Wars in victory and retained a reputation that inspired fear abroad. During the Third Great Ninja War, it was capable of contending with the other four major villages simultaneously 597 814. Despite this legacy, Hiruzen viewed his own generation as one of decline: renowned masters were aging, successors were scarce, and his former disciples had either defected or left the village 27.

Konoha Crush Plan

Before the invasion, Hinata located thousands of Explosive Tags scattered throughout Konoha and delivered a marked map to Hiruzen. He convened a large-scale ninja response to remove them from the streets and alleys 93.

On August 7, Year 60 of the Konoha calendar, Sunagakure and Otogakure launched the Konoha Crush Plan. Sand infiltrators targeted Konoha's ninja forces and military hubs rather than civilians, while the village descended into chaos under a mass genjutsu and external assault 248 288.

Konoha's counterattack began with Hokage-aligned clans, including the Ino-Shika-Cho families, and returning mission teams. The allied Sand–Sound assault ultimately failed, though Hiruzen was declared dead during the conflict 280 286. The invasion damaged many buildings but left Konoha's foundation intact; Baki subsequently secured the surrender of the remaining Sand ninja 286 287.

Hiruzen's death deprived the victorious village of its central leader and lowered morale, prompting the search for a Fifth Hokage 288 289.

Tsunade's succession and internal unrest

Tsunade returned to Konoha with Jiraiya, Naruto, and Shizune, drawing immediate attention from both civilians and clan leaders 321. She was appointed Fifth Hokage, with advisors Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu managing the formal announcement and transition 325 328.

Her administration faced persistent pressure from Shimura Danzo and Root. Danzo used Root to recruit prison escapees, spread rumors against Tsunade, and pursue influence within the village 535. Konoha's advisors described Root as the “darkness” that handled matters the village could not perform openly, while acknowledging that Danzo's ambition had grown after Hiruzen's death 536.

Hyuga unrest

A series of vandalized businesses with distant Hyuga connections triggered a Hokage-faction investigation. Shizune and the Ino-Shika-Cho clan heads suspected Root's involvement and recognized the risk of mishandling the village's already delicate relationship with the Hyuga Clan 1186 1187.

The crisis escalated when Root infiltrated Hyuga territory and kidnapped Hanabi Hyuga through a secret passage beneath the clan compound 1202. The Hyuga Clan recalled its members, adopted strict defenses, and prompted other clans to consolidate their forces as well 1192. Root's forces were ultimately defeated, aided by the Hyuga Clan's direct intervention 1232.

Sky Ninja attack

The Sky Ninja launched a swift aerial assault on Konoha, exploiting the defenders' lack of preparation against airborne opponents. The village suffered severe damage and casualties, particularly in its central districts 868 869.

Tsunade declared Level 1 combat readiness, ordered a war of retribution, mobilized the clans' ninja, and arranged for affected civilians to be relocated from the ruined central areas to the outskirts 869. Konoha's leadership treated the attack as a challenge to its standing as the greatest ninja village 869 870.

Fourth Great Ninja War

After Akatsuki's Tailed Beast-capture plan was exposed, Tsunade joined the other Kage in convening the Five Kage Summit 1139. Following Akatsuki's declaration of war, Konoha mobilized all Chunin and higher-ranked ninja and ordered clans to prepare supplies 1211 1236.

Konoha's army, led by Tsunade and accompanied by figures including Kakashi, Might Guy, Shikaku Nara, Inoichi Yamanaka, and Choza Akimichi, advanced toward the Land of Lightning. Shikaku shared command of the Allied Shinobi Forces with Kumogakure's Mabui 1240.

Relations

• Hyuga Clan — The village sought to elevate the Hyuga as Konoha's strongest clan and considered granting it control of the Military Police Force again. The clan nevertheless remains wary of deeper integration, fearing suppression or division after the Uchiha Clan's downfall 4 577.
