Ch. 241Prelude
Plot points
- The 100,000-strong Black Banner Army arrives outside the Imperial Capital and is ordered to join 50,000 elite troops in the western outskirts.
- Commander-in-Chief Luo Minghai gives Fang Jin a sealed order from Chief Executive Zichuan Canxing: surround Manor No. 9527, prevent anyone from escaping, and kill anyone who resists. The occupants are labeled traitors.
- Fang Jin recognizes the manor as the home of Zichuan Xiu’s adoptive father—the man who saved Fang Jin and thousands of soldiers at the Battle of Moon Bay.
- Fang Jin refuses to attack without first speaking to the manor’s owner. He tells Luo that he will obey if the man proves to be a traitor, but will not harm his benefactor otherwise. He rides toward the manor, and Geshan follows.
- At the Inspectorate, Di Lin learns that Fang Jin and Geshan are heading to Manor No. 9527. He orders the Gendarmerie Corps to maximum alert and tells the Central Army’s Sterling to prepare for a confrontation with Zichuan Canxing.
Character developments and interactions
- Fang Jin is torn between the chance to redeem himself after a past defeat and his debt of loyalty to the man who saved him. He chooses to investigate rather than blindly follow orders.
- Geshan questions the secrecy and tactics behind the operation, pointing out that the Black Banner Army was brought in without being told its target. Her support reinforces Fang Jin’s doubts.
- Luo Minghai pressures Fang Jin to obey, invoking his disgrace as a defeated commander and reminding him that Canxing gave him his current position. He is unsettled when Fang Jin reveals his personal connection to the manor.
- Di Lin interprets the order as a deliberate test meant to force Fang Jin to choose between loyalty and obedience. He responds by preparing his own forces.
Significant themes
- Conscience versus command: Fang Jin questions whether duty justifies attacking someone who may be innocent.
- Loyalty and gratitude: His obligation to his benefactor outweighs his desire to restore his reputation.
- Political manipulation and mistrust: The undisclosed target, secret troop deployment, and order to eliminate all resistance suggest that the operation may be part of a larger power struggle.
