Background

Pietro and his sister Wanda were held as test subjects at Baron Strucker's Sokovian base, where Hydra used the Mind Scepter's power and experimental serum to create enhanced weapons. Pietro gained extraordinary speed, but his circulatory system could not withstand the pressure and friction of supersonic movement. 168

When Strucker tripled the injection dosage, Pietro's condition became critical. His blood vessels ruptured below the knees, his legs began to blacken from tissue necrosis, and he faced amputation within forty-eight hours. Strucker dismissed his injuries as irrelevant so long as the experiments produced results. 168 170

After escaping Hydra, Wanda brought Pietro to Miracle Clinic in New York. Lynn diagnosed extensive vascular rupture, nerve damage, failed cellular regeneration, and Space Stone isotope contamination in Pietro's bone marrow. 169 170
