Vampires could summon familiars because they were undead creatures, almost entirely free from the limits of lifespan. They could allow their familiars to devour their life force as wildly as they pleased, then dominate them.
If other creatures tried to control familiars, their lives would likely be exhausted the instant those familiars were summoned. That was a vampire's greatest defining trait, and the advantage that allowed them to stand above other monsters.
