Background

Lin Mu was the third son of Qinghe County Magistrate Lin Hanshan. He operated the Leviathan Gang as a source of illicit tribute silver and used it to conduct the Lin Family's dirty work, treating Blackwater Bay as his personal purse 42.

He lived in the shadow of his elder brother Lin Zhuo, whom Lin Hanshan trusted more for his steadiness and competence. Lin Mu volunteered for the Yellow Dragon River campaign partly to regain his father's regard and prove that he was not useless 64.

Lin Mu was a fair-skinned man in his early twenties, with a trace of softness between his brows and a habit of wearing an ambiguous smile while watching others struggle 46.

Personality

Lin Mu initially presented himself as warm, generous, and personable. He personally poured Xu Qing wine, praised his Golden Scale Gathering performance, and offered him superior resources and a place in his own martial hall 56. His civility disappeared when Xu Qing refused: he lied about the Tiger Bone Pills' ownership, demanded obedience, and threatened retaliation 56.

He was deeply insecure about his standing within the Lin Family. After the failed river campaign, he resented Xu Qing and Captain Qi for his disgrace, particularly because his father had redirected resources toward Lin Zhuo 64 76. His need for recognition repeatedly drove him toward reckless, violent schemes.

Lin Mu was ruthless toward perceived enemies. He arranged for Xu Qing to be killed during a government campaign and intended to have Xu Qing's death framed as a patriotic sacrifice while his family was “taken care of” afterward 60 61. However, when his own life was threatened, he panicked and could not maintain the composure he displayed in public 78.

Control of Blackwater Bay

Lin Mu profited from Blackwater Bay through the Leviathan Gang, which collected tribute silver and carried out illegal work for him. The gang's destruction placed Xu Qing directly in conflict with the Lin Family faction 38 42.

At the Golden Scale Gathering, Xu Qing recognized Lin Mu as the man who had ordered the ramming of his parents' boat. Lin Mu remained unaware of Xu Qing's identity and watched the matches with detached amusement 46.

Recruitment Attempt

Following Xu Qing's victory at the Golden Scale Gathering, Lin Mu invited him to Lucky Auspice Restaurant. He offered Xu Qing better martial resources and attempted to acquire his Tiger Bone Pills, but Xu Qing refused both the recruitment and sale 56.

Lin Mu abandoned his friendly façade and warned Xu Qing that he would regret the decision. He then began monitoring Xu Qing and accelerating plans involving the Wu Clan's merchant ship 56.

Yellow Dragon River Killing Trap

Lin Mu volunteered to lead the government force sent against Jiaolong Stronghold, receiving authority over two hundred soldiers and yamen runners 59. The campaign was a trap: Lin Mu's allies among the water bandits ambushed Captain Qi's team, while Lin Cang and five private soldiers waited to intercept Xu Qing 60 61.

The plan collapsed when Xu Qing survived and returned to camp. Lin Mu lost Lin Cang, multiple Dark Force and Bright Force martial artists, and Jiaolong Stronghold itself, but could not explain those losses without exposing his own connection to the bandits 63 64.

Death at Blackwater Bay

After arranging the burning of Xu Qing's home, Lin Mu pursued Xu Qing to Blackwater Bay with Lin Family martial artists and Tian Ruilong. He intended to personally kill Xu Qing and use the victory to restore his standing before Lin Hanshan 71 76.

Tian Ruilong was killed by Xu Qing before Lin Mu arrived. Lin Tie was then defeated in an instant, leaving Lin Mu unable to resist Xu Qing's attack 77 78. Xu Qing killed Lin Mu, looted his body, and burned the Zhou Family Compound along with the Fish-Dragon Gang's remaining hideout; Ning Yun later offered to claim responsibility in order to conceal Xu Qing's true strength 79.
