Background / History
Xu Qing grew up in Blackwater Bay in a poor fishing household. His parents had already died, and his second uncle, Xu Erniu, supported his wish to train by emptying the family savings and borrowing money for the apprenticeship fee. Xu Qing carries this kindness deeply and vows to give his uncle's family a better life. 1 4
Three days before entering the Zhao Family Martial Hall, he awakened memories and wisdom from a past life. Alongside them came his “golden finger,” the Fate Innate Martial Seed, which assured him that cultivation would naturally yield attainment. 1
The Leviathan Gang's exploitation of Blackwater Bay hardened his resolve. He views martial arts as the only means to protect his family, resist oppression, and escape poverty. 2
Zhao Yan initially judged his bones to be below average. Xu Qing nevertheless displayed startling comprehension, entering beginner stance work almost immediately and developing the Five Elements Fist at an abnormal pace. 4 11 His true innate bones—Dragon Sinew, Tiger Bone—only became apparent after he entered Bright Force. 65
Appearance
Xu Qing initially appears dark, thin, and dressed in old, washed-pale clothing typical of a poor fisherman’s household. As Zhao Yan’s disciple and a yamen constable, he receives fitted martial uniforms and later wears a black constable’s uniform with badge and saber. 12 32 92
- Dark and thin during his earliest days at the martial hall. 92
- Wore worn-out, faded clothes before receiving martial-hall uniforms. 12
- Later receives tailored blue-gray training outfits from Zhao Yan. 34
- Carries a constable’s badge and saber while serving at the yamen. 32
Personality
Xu Qing is intensely disciplined. He rises before dawn, trains after everyone else sleeps, and continues until exhaustion. Poverty and the vulnerability of his family drive his pursuit of strength rather than ambition for status alone. 9 23
He remembers favors and repays those who help him. His loyalty to Xu Erniu’s family, Zhao Yan, Ning Yun, and Qin Liang is central to his decisions; he also accepts Lu Chuan’s patronage because it provides the resources needed to advance. 1 65 90 94
In public, Xu Qing is generally composed and restrained, neither servile toward the powerful nor arrogant after victory. In combat and retaliation, however, he is decisive and ruthless, killing those he considers threats to his family or allies. 16 53 62 92
