Life before cultivation

Jiang Yuan transmigrated into a chaotic era where martial strength determines status. Lacking family backing and martial talent, he survived through fishing, salt hauling, herb-selling, and other work before settling in Jiangning City as a teahouse storyteller. By age seventy, he considers his life an “utter failure.” 1

Mei Lan took him in at her teahouse, provided him food and lodging, and treated him as an elder. On his seventieth birthday, Jiang Yuan receives an extension of his lifespan and the Late Bloomer fate, which restores his body and grants seventyfold cultivation speed. 1 2

First steps on the martial path

Jiang Yuan begins by protecting Mei Lan’s porridge distribution from unruly refugees and disguised Black Market members. Though he has superior physical strength, he initially lacks formal martial techniques and deliberately cultivates the image of an ancient hidden expert to deter enemies. 2 3

After Ma Shan repeatedly schemes against Mei Lan and attempts to murder him, Jiang Yuan kills him with a palm strike and arranges the scene to appear as an accidental death during theft. He then persuades Constable Chief Zhang Yong to teach him martial arts. 4 5

Within a month, Jiang Yuan condenses true qi. He passes the Jiangning City martial artist assessment by defeating chief examiner Zhao Tieshan in two moves, becoming a registered City Lord’s Manor retainer with a monthly spirit-stone stipend. 6 8

Sword cultivation and the Blood-Clad Cult

The second volume of the Longevity Scroll grants Jiang Yuan the Primordial Sword Body and the Evergreen Sword. His innate sword intent allows him to comprehend most sword moves after seeing them once and refine basic techniques into formidable swordsmanship. 9 11

He meets Azure Profound Sect disciple Guan Ling and spars with her at night. After copying her Shadowless Sword Technique and producing five sword shadows after a single viewing, he agrees to teach her an incomplete version of Myriad Swords Return to the Source in exchange for the Azure Lotus Sword Art. 12 13 14

Jiang Yuan aids Guan Ling’s party against Blood-Clad Cult forces, using the Azure Lotus Sword Art to kill more than a dozen Blood-Clad Slaves in a single strike. While investigating the cult’s ruined temple, he discovers its hidden treasure chamber and acquires the Seven-Kill Sword Casket. 19 20

After unlocking Volume Three of the Longevity Scroll and gaining Vajra Invulnerability and Palm Thunder, Jiang Yuan leaves Jiangning City to avoid bringing danger to Mei Lan’s teahouse. Black Market career

Liu Mang recruits Jiang Yuan into the Black Market’s White Tiger Hall, arguing that its influence can shield him from the Blood-Clad Cult and Azure Profound Sect. Jiang Yuan accepts a low-ranking steward post, preferring to build influence quietly rather than reveal his full strength. 25 27

He breaks through to the Channel Opening Realm, redeems Chunlan and Qiuju from Vermilion Bird Hall, and employs them with wages rather than retaining them as property. 26 28

As manager of Sishui Street, Jiang Yuan imposes strict order and kills Zhang Xiaoshan after witnessing him prey on a vegetable seller and her daughter. When Zhang Bo retaliates, Jiang Yuan withstands a group assault with Vajra Invulnerability and wipes out Zhang Bo’s forces with Palm Thunder. His reputation earns him the title “Heaven-Thunder Elder.” 29 31 32 33

Promoted to steward in Zhang Bo’s place, Jiang Yuan later receives authority over White Tiger Hall’s western district. He halves rents, replaces protection fees with membership fees, expands protection and service, and forces the stewards into regular work.
