Background / History

Medivh is the son of Aegwynn, the previous Guardian of Azeroth, and Nielas Aran, a renowned Stormwind court mage. His exceptional lineage and magical talent allowed him to become a full-fledged mage at the age of ten—the youngest in the Stormwind Royal Academy’s history. 20 27

Roughly three centuries before the story, Aegwynn defeated Sargeras and sealed the demon king’s body away, but failed to notice that Sargeras’s soul had entered her. The demonic soul passed into Medivh when he was born; after Medivh reached adulthood, Sargeras gained near-complete control over his body. Medivh’s own will only rarely takes control. 22

As Stormwind’s Guardian and King Llane’s childhood friend, Medivh holds an unparalleled position in the kingdom. Although he appears at court and serves as headmaster of the Royal Academy, he spends much of his time conducting magical research in Karazhan, his tower in Deadwind Pass. 22 28

Appearance

At this point in the story, Medivh is a young and notably handsome man rather than the bearded figure he later becomes. 22

Personality

Medivh outwardly conducts himself as a composed, courteous, and magnanimous archmage. He silences hostile mages with a gesture, praises Duke’s ambition in public, and offers the academy’s resources as compensation after Duke is berated by the gathered mages. 22 24

However, Sargeras’s influence makes his actions deeply suspect. When Duke refuses apprenticeship, Medivh allows the surrounding mages to verbally attack him rather than stopping them immediately; Sargeras expects the pressure to break Duke into submission. 23 His later kindness and support may stem from Medivh himself, Sargeras, or Sargeras’s influence over Medivh, leaving his intentions uncertain. 28

Story Role / Major Arcs

Duke’s Recruitment Attempt

After Duke clears the academy’s trials and defeats Philip Jandell in a simulated duel, Medivh personally introduces himself and offers to take Duke as his disciple. Duke immediately refuses. 21

Duke’s stated reason is that becoming Medivh’s disciple would leave all of his future accomplishments in Medivh’s shadow; he wants to be remembered as Duke Marcus rather than merely “Medivh’s disciple.” 22 Privately, Duke refuses because he knows Sargeras possesses Medivh. 22

The Academy Confrontation

Duke’s refusal provokes outrage from Stormwind’s mages. Medivh initially fails to stop their abuse, allowing Sargeras to use the crowd’s hostility to pressure Duke. 23 He later rebukes the mages, presents himself as fair and tolerant, and offers Duke preferential admission to the academy. 24

Promotion Examination

When Duke demands an immediate promotion trial, Medivh creates an isolated magical space and acts as examiner. He confirms that casting three Level 1 spells without magical items will qualify Duke as an official mage. 25

Medivh advises Duke to stop when Duke nearly exhausts himself casting Arcane Intellect, but witnesses Duke force open new magic circuits and become a full-fledged mage. 26

Appointment of Earth Mage Marcus

Following Duke’s breakthrough, Medivh invites him to join both the Stormwind Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and the National Mage Corps. Duke accepts, and Medivh brands his left forearm with an arcane lion insignia, formally granting him the title of Earth Mage. 27
