Ch. 61Amaterasu's Might
Plot and key events
- Jiraiya traps Shisui and Itachi in the Swamp of the Underworld, but Shisui summons his armored Susanoo to shield them and drive back Jiraiya’s forces.
- As reinforcements—including the Third Hokage and Shikaku—arrive, the pair fight their way toward Konoha’s wall. Uchiha Police Force members and other clan shinobi intercept them.
- Shisui publicly accuses Danzō of stealing his Sharingan and the Third Hokage of protecting him. He and Itachi slash their forehead protectors, openly declaring themselves deserters.
- The Third Hokage orders them killed. Shisui’s Susanoo blocks the attack, while Itachi unleashes Amaterasu. The black flames burn Jiraiya’s hair, force his toad summons Fukasaku and Shima to retreat, destroy Enma’s staff form, and kill sixteen ANBU.
- Jiraiya and the Barrier Team seal the flames. Shisui and Itachi escape, while the Third Hokage—his authority further damaged—leads a large force toward the Uchiha compound. The Uchiha Police Force quietly signals Yamanaka Saki to warn Uchiha Zhengye.
Character developments and interactions
- Shisui remains composed under pressure, protects Itachi with Susanoo, and turns their escape into a public denunciation of the village leadership.
- Itachi reveals the devastating power of Amaterasu, using it to break the pursuit and secure their escape.
- The Third Hokage shifts from anger to alarm as the flames inflict heavy casualties and expose his vulnerability. He then redirects the crisis toward the Uchiha compound.
- Jiraiya fights to stop the pair, narrowly limits the damage to himself, and takes responsibility for containing the flames.
- Uchiha Soji and the Police Force heed Shisui’s coded signal and refrain from intervening; afterward, they arrange a warning for their clan.
- Shikaku remains silent, while the other clans watch uncertainly as the confrontation escalates.
Significant themes
- Injustice and betrayal: Shisui frames the defection as a response to Danzō’s actions and the Hokage’s alleged complicity.
- Power and its cost: Amaterasu ensures the fugitives’ escape but leaves severe casualties and public terror.
- Political legitimacy: The Hokage’s inability to control the crisis—and the Uchiha Police Force’s visible lack of grief—deepens distrust between the village leadership and the clan.
- Loyalty and solidarity: Shisui and Itachi act together, while the Uchiha officers quietly support their own through signals and warnings.
