Background / History

Jin fought in the Third Northern Inquiry War. He was badly injured during the conflict and remained in Roa after the Loken Kingdom withdrew its forces. He initially sought a way to leave the city, but eventually settled into helping Variants and cultivating promising younger members of their kind. He has lived in Roa for ten years and is implied to be over fifty years old. 25 45

To stabilize his smuggling business against rival families, Baron Mansla partnered with Jin after Jin arrived in Roa. Jin safeguards interests connected to the forest route, but the arrangement is limited cooperation rather than loyalty; Mansla considers him powerful but replaceable and fears the trouble he causes. 20 25 27

Jin encountered Adel in the forest and guided him to Hoda, enabling Adel to settle in Roa. Adel considers Jin the strongest Variant he has ever met. 20

Appearance

Jin can assume a human guise, but his werewolf transformation is imposing and immediately identifiable by its smoke-like qualities.

  • In wolfman form, he is approximately 2.3 meters tall, with brown-black fur, a wolf's head, and scarlet pupils. 19
  • His transformed presence is accompanied by large quantities of black smoke. 19 23
  • In human form, he remains taller than Adam and is described with brown eyes. 19 27
  • He bears a large V-shaped scar beneath his collar; maintaining its seal appears to require black smoke and causes him severe pain. 24 39

Personality

Jin is boisterous, irreverent, and prone to laughing at Adam, but he is also observant enough to identify Adam's poor combat habits, hidden anxieties, and violent awakening risk from limited evidence. 19 20 21

His mentorship is harsh. He provokes Adam into fighting, uses potentially lethal training methods, and repeatedly states that disappointment could earn Adam's death. Yet he stops short of finishing Adam when he is vulnerable, treats Adam's wounds after their battle, and consistently offers practical protection and instruction. 22 23 24

Jin values talented Variants and frames his actions as an effort to improve the werewolf race's worsening circumstances. He remains guarded about his own motives and past, however, leaving Adam uncertain why he invests so heavily in him. 24 36 45

Abilities & Skills

Werewolf Physiology

Jin possesses strength, speed, senses, and healing far beyond Adam's early werewolf capabilities.

  • Moves quickly enough to evade Adam's attacks and disappear from Adam's expanded perception. 21 22
  • Regenerates severe wounds rapidly, including abdominal punctures and gashes exposing bone. 22 23
  • Uses heightened smell and perception to identify Adam's aura, track his movements, and assess his bloodline state. 20 25 37
  • His physical ability and self-healing greatly exceed Adam's at the time of their forest training. 22

Black Smoke Bloodline Ability

Jin's awakened bloodline ability manifests as black smoke. He identifies it as the core ability of his bloodline-sorcerer path. 27

  • Can transform into a smoke werewolf and disperse damage through smoke. 23
  • Can leave behind a smoke-and-dirt body double, allowing an apparent corpse to collapse into soil while Jin reappears elsewhere. 23 39
  • Conceals his presence and can conceal or reinforce Adam's aura during nighttime travel. 37 48
  • Can place an inconspicuous tracking wisp on a target. Jin tracked Adam through such a mark after Adam entered the area near his home. 37
  • Can form a wolf-head tattoo on Adam's back, allowing Jin to speak through Adam's senses and maintain contact through mental power. 48 49
  • Can bind wounds, stop bleeding, and set bones, as demonstrated after Adam's battle. 23

Refinement-Stage Cultivation

Jin is a third-stage, Refinement-stage bloodline sorcerer. He explains that bloodlines must pass through Maintenance, Overflow, and Refinement before becoming stable ritual frameworks. 27

  • Understands the cultivation sequence: Maintenance, Overflow, Refinement, Return, and Ascend. 26 27
  • Teaches the Heart of Life school and the shared foundational principles of knight and bloodline-sorcerer cultivation. 38
  • Explains bloodlines as unfinished ritual frameworks sustained by life, ancestral spirit, and natural force. 37 38
  • Warns of bloodline dangers, including ancestral consciousnesses that may corrupt the mind, possess descendants, or steal their lives. 37

Combat Instruction

Though Jin says combat is not his specialty, he overwhelmingly outclasses Adam in close combat and trains him through live, brutal engagements. 24

  • Teaches Adam to regulate force rather than overcommit to attacks. 21 22
  • Emphasizes perception, timing, deception, and choosing what information to prioritize in battle. 22
  • Uses terrain, thrown stones, poisonous thorns, and feints to test Adam's adaptability. 22
  • Recognizes and critiques Adam's awakened ability, including the interval between Adam's aura display and physical attacks. 24

Knowledge of Variants and Politics

Jin has extensive knowledge of supernatural professions, Variant bloodlines, the Loken Kingdom, and the Northern Inquiry Wars. 26 27 45 50

  • Advises Adam on the weaknesses and characteristics of aberrant races during the gathering at Number Seventeen. 48 49
  • Explains noble merits, their territorial nature, and their role in the Loken Kingdom's militarism. 45 50
  • Knows that Count Ronnie, Adam's distant Trinder relative, was a Variant whose disappearance helped trigger the First Northern Inquiry War. 45

Relationships

  • Adam / Nesser Riggs Trinder — Student and fellow werewolf. Jin first exposes Adam's inadequate knowledge and forces him into combat, then becomes his mentor, teaches him cultivation, and helps plan Adam's escape from Roa. 19 24 27 45
  • Baron Mansla — Business partner in Roa's smuggling operation. Their relationship is mutually useful but strained; Mansla relies on Jin's strength while warning him not to create instability. 20 25 27
  • Adel — Jin encountered Adel while Adel hid in the forest and guided him to Hoda. Adel later identifies Jin as the strongest Variant he has met. 20
  • Holy Sound Three Heroes — Jin knows of Xia Ya, Alva, and Anthony by their former collective title, though he was not in the Holy Sound Kingdom during their earlier prominence. 27

Story Role / Major Arcs

Encounter with Nesser Riggs

Jin intercepts Adam while Adam is disguised as the renegade priest Nesser Riggs. He recognizes Adam's weaknesses but does not immediately expose him, instead requesting access to the Tears of God Ritual and watching Adam with interest. 19

Jin tracks Adam ahead of the full moon, identifies him as a gifted purebred werewolf, and concludes that Adam's repressed instincts and premature perception state will make his awakening unusually violent. 20

Full-Moon Trial and Mentorship

Jin confronts Adam at the river, reveals that he knows Adam's secret, and demands that Adam demonstrate his talent or die. He draws Adam into the forest, where their fight becomes both a genuine clash and a test of Adam's awakening. 21 23

After Adam awakens Soul Weight and seemingly kills him, Jin survives through his smoke ability, concedes the fight, stabilizes Adam's injuries, and brings him back to the slums. He subsequently offers Adam formal instruction. 23 24

Teacher and Advisor

Jin teaches Adam the theory of professions, the Three Elements, bloodlines, cultivation stages, knightly methods, and the risks inherent to bloodline sorcery. He recommends that Adam combine knight and sorcerer paths around Soul Weight to create a unique ritual framework. 26 27 37 38

He also interprets the complete Tears of God Ritual for Adam, revealing that its perfected concealment makes Adam appear to the Church as a radiant holy-knight talent rather than a Variant. 37

Escape Planning and Aberrant Support

Jin warns Adam that Mansla's smuggling network is difficult to penetrate and may be backed by an unknown force. When Adam proposes using the purported immortality medicine to secure Doug Rom's support, Jin helps refine the plan and offers assistance despite the danger. 27 45

During the aberrant gathering at Number Seventeen, Jin conceals himself as a tattoo on Adam's body, provides information on the aberrants present, and guides Adam in communicating through mental power. 48 49

Notable Quotes
