Background

Zhang San was associated with Zhou Bu'er, a Demon-Slaying Bureau demon slayer who died while pursuing a great demon eighteen years earlier. Zhang San survived that same battle, but lost more than half of his head to the injury. 1

When Zhou Bu'er's son, Zhou Ping'an, entered the Bureau prison as a new menial, Zhang San was assigned responsibility for him. Though he disliked newcomers who entered through connections, he considered the son of a fallen Bureau member “one of our own,” personally securing Zhou a new uniform and room while protecting him from being mistreated by other menials. 1

Zhang San tested Zhou's resolve by allowing him to endure the pressure of the imprisoned Scale-Bone Snake Demon. After Zhou lasted an hour, Zhang recognized his willpower and offered him the body-cultivation path, which bypasses the need for usable meridians and a functioning dantian. He then immersed Zhou in refined demon blood to cleanse his body. 2

Zhou remained in the demon-blood barrel for a full day and night—the longest endurance recorded in the Bureau according to Zhang—and successfully opened all 360 acupoints. Zhang won the associated wager from other Bureau members. 3

Appearance

Zhang San is bald and bears an extreme head wound from his past battle with Zhou Bu'er.

Personality

Zhang San is warmly protective toward the descendants of Bureau personnel. He treats Zhou Ping'an with familiarity from their first meeting, arranges for his needs personally, and seeks a viable cultivation route for him because Zhou is the only son of Zhang's fallen comrade. 1 2

His compassion does not extend to imprisoned demons. Zhang is openly intimidating and ruthless in extracting blood and marrow from the Scale-Bone Snake Demon, dismissing its suffering and threatening to take its marrow by force. 2

He also has a boastful, playful side. He deliberately opens the prison door through brute strength to impress Zhou, bets on Zhou's demon-blood training, and celebrates his winnings before leaving for Spring Embroidery Pavilion. 2 3

Zhou Ping'an's Entry into the Demon-Slaying Bureau

Zhang San becomes Zhou's direct superior after the old Treasure Pavilion manager brings Zhou to the Bureau prison. He verifies Zhou's connection to Zhou Bu'er, takes him deeper into the prison, and ensures he receives proper menial equipment rather than used clothing. 1

Initiation into Body Cultivation

After confirming Zhou's resolve against the Scale-Bone Snake Demon's pressure, Zhang reveals Zhou's physical limitations and provides an alternative: demon-blood body cultivation. His intervention allows Zhou to cleanse his meridians and marrow, open 360 acupoints, and finally sense spiritual energy. 2 3

Recovery of the Thousand-Year Ginseng

When Zhou forces the Scale-Bone Snake Demon to disclose a hidden thousand-year ginseng, Zhang takes responsibility for retrieving it. He and Ma Er decline a share, allowing Zhou to retain the entire spiritual medicine. 4
