In Konoha's forty-third year, the cicadas of summer chirped incessantly, and the air was so stifling it seemed frozen in place. Kyohaku Uchiha's third year at the Ninja Academy passed steadily amid the same daily routines of disguise, study, and secret training. At eight years old, he had long since fused the identity of "Kyohaku Uchiha" into his bones. Every word, every action, even every glance perfectly fit the image of an introverted, prematurely mature, disabled orphan, without the slightest flaw.
Yet as the semester neared its end, that peace was completely shattered by explosive news.
"Did you hear? That Kakashi Hatake!"
"Which one?"
"That white-haired first-year who wears a mask all day and ignores everyone!"
"What about him?"
"He's applying to graduate early! He's only five!"
"Are you kidding?! Graduating at five?"
The news spread through the entire academy like wildfire. From upperclassmen to lowerclassmen, every student was discussing it, their voices filled with disbelief, envy, curiosity, and a trace of bewilderment at being left so far behind.
Early graduation was not without precedent, but it had mostly occurred during periods when war was especially dire and manpower was desperately scarce. In these relatively peaceful times, a five-year-old applying to graduate was simply unheard of. More importantly, the graduation assessment was no joke. One had to pass a real combat evaluation overseen by a Jonin.
On the day of the assessment, the academy's largest training ground was exceptionally packed. Nearly all the teachers and students had come. The lower-year students crowded at the front, while the upper-year students stood behind them or along the side stands. The voices were deafening, and the air was thick with restless anticipation. Even several academy higher-ups who rarely showed themselves had all arrived.
The most eye-catching figure was the one seated at the center of the main stand—Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi. Wearing his Hokage robes with a pipe in his mouth, his face appeared benevolent yet unfathomable through the curling smoke. He calmly watched the training ground below. His presence undoubtedly proclaimed that this assessment was far from ordinary.
Kyohaku Uchiha stood quietly in the third-year section, leaning on his cane amid his classmates' excited whispers. Looking at the scene, he felt no stirrings in his heart, only a detached sense of just as expected. Kakashi Hatake, son of Konoha's White Fang, Hatake Sakumo. The peerless genius recognized in the original story. Graduated at five, became a Chunin at six, a Jonin at twelve... The plot has finally reached this point.
His gaze shifted to the center of the training ground. Two people stood there. One was a stern-faced Chunin instructor from the Ninja Academy, serving as the examiner. The other was a particularly small figure standing perfectly straight.
Spiky white hair, a black mask covering most of his face, and a pair of half-lidded eyes that were far too sharp for a child. A short sword that was overly long for his small frame rested across his back. He stared calmly ahead, seemingly deaf to the overwhelming gazes and chatter around him, as if the entire world held only him and the examiner before him.
That was five-year-old Kakashi Hatake.
"The assessment begins!" At a Jonin instructor's loud announcement, the grounds instantly fell silent.
The Chunin instructor did not dare let his guard down. Though his opponent was only five years old, the Hokage himself was watching, and he was the son of the famed White Fang. The instructor had to give his all as a sign of respect.
Whoosh! The Chunin instructor struck first, several Shuriken flying at Kakashi in a triangular formation, their speed and force maintained at a proper Chunin level.
Kakashi moved. His movements were so fast they were almost impossible to follow! His small body displayed astonishing agility and explosive power. With only a slight twist and a sliding step, he evaded the Shuriken by a hair's breadth. At the same time, he flicked two Shuriken backhandedly—not at the Chunin instructor, but at the positions where he might dodge, predicting his movements in advance!
"So fast!" Low cries rose from the stands.
The Chunin instructor was startled as well. He quickly formed hand seals. "Clone Technique!" Two clones appeared and charged Kakashi alongside the original.
A cool gleam flashed through Kakashi's half-lidded eyes. He was not fooled. Almost instantly, he identified the Chunin instructor's real body—not through chakra sensing, which was still too advanced for him, but through minute differences in movement habits and the flow of his breath! He suddenly lowered his center of gravity and shot forward like a leopard, charging directly at the instructor's true body!
"What?!" The Chunin instructor had not expected such decisiveness. He immediately changed tactics and threw a punch.
Kakashi neither dodged nor retreated. Taking advantage of his small stature, he skimmed past the force of the punch by the narrowest margin. At some point, his right hand had already gripped the hilt of the short sword on his back!
"The White Fang Blade?!" someone in the stands cried out.
The short sword was not fully drawn, revealing only a brief glint of cold steel. Kakashi used it to precisely deflect the Chunin instructor's follow-up strike, producing a crisp clang of metal! He was completely outmatched in strength and was knocked back several steps, but his footing did not falter in the slightest. He immediately resumed a defensive stance.
The battle that followed became a complete display of Kakashi's personal abilities. His taijutsu was fluid and efficient, without a single unnecessary movement. Every dodge, every block, every counterattack was terrifyingly precise, as if forged through countless trials. His Shuriken Technique was tricky and accurate, always launching attacks from the most unexpected angles. He even skillfully used the Substitution Technique and Transformation Technique midway through the fight. They were only basic Three-Body Techniques, but his timing and creativity were astonishing.
He was like a machine born for battle—calm, efficient, sharp. Within that tiny body lay combat wisdom far beyond his age and killing skills that were nearly instinctive.
At last, after another crisp clash, the Chunin instructor voluntarily leaped back and ceased his movements. Looking at Kakashi, who was breathing lightly but whose eyes remained sharp, he took a deep breath, turned to the stands, and announced loudly, "Assessment passed! Kakashi Hatake possesses the qualifications of a Genin!"
Silence.
After a brief stillness, a tremendous uproar erupted around the training ground, mingled with amazement, envy, and disbelief!
"He passed! He really passed!"
"Five years old... He's practically a monster!"
"As expected of Lord White Fang's son..."
Hiruzen Sarutobi rose from his seat, a gratified yet complicated smile on his face, and clapped forcefully. Then thunderous applause swept through the entire grounds.
At the center of the field, Kakashi breathed lightly as he slowly slid his short sword back into its sheath. Faced with the cheers of the crowd and the Hokage's approval, his expression remained unchanged. Yet in those exposed eyes, there seemed to be a fleeting, almost imperceptible relaxation at having completed a predetermined objective before he returned to his usual indifference.
Kyohaku Uchiha lightly applauded along with the crowd, but his gaze pierced through the cheering spectators and settled on that small white figure.
A genius? he murmured inwardly. Yes, without a doubt. But what kind of harsh, even cruel training and expectations had built such genius? And behind that calmness beyond his years, what pressure and loneliness were hidden?
Kakashi's early graduation was like a massive stone thrown into a lake, stirring enormous waves in the hearts of Konoha's young generation of ninja. It drew a clear and despairing starting line, while also heralding the arrival of an even more turbulent era.
Kyohaku withdrew his gaze and lowered his head to look at his right foot, which still carried a slight limp.
The gap between them was like an uncrossable chasm.
But there was not the slightest hint of discouragement or jealousy in his eyes. Instead, they held an even deeper, quieter resolve.
He had his own path to walk. A path unlike that of any genius, slow yet unwavering—a path that belonged to him alone.
The applause gradually faded, and the crowd began to disperse. Leaning on his cane, Kyohaku turned and silently headed out of the academy. The summer sunlight fell across him, stretching his shadow long behind him. The road ahead was still very long.
