The lingering rays of the setting sun dyed the stone-paved paths of the Uchiha Compound a warm gold, yet they could not dispel the invisible indifference surrounding Kyohaku Uchiha. He and Shota Uchiha had just extricated themselves from the clamorous Security Department reform proceedings and were walking one after the other toward the deeper parts of the compound. Before Shota's residence, Kyohaku stopped and glanced across the courtyard. His older female cousin, Maiyi Uchiha, was supporting her waist as she slowly paced beneath the veranda, her swollen belly tracing the curve of new life. When she saw Kyohaku, a gentle smile appeared on her face, and she lightly raised a hand in greeting. Kyohaku gave a slight nod in return, his gaze lingering on her pregnant belly for a moment, complex and unreadable.
He did not enter the house. Instead, he turned to his uncle. "Let's go to Fugaku's house." His tone was calm, leaving no room for discussion.
Shota froze for a moment, somewhat hesitant. "Now? The Security Department just..."
"Now." Kyohaku cut him off, his gaze already turned toward Fugaku's residence. He had no interest in the Uchiha Clan's specific day-to-day affairs. To him, the position of clan head was more like a necessary tool for achieving his goals, a hub for consolidating resources. His true goal had always been somewhere loftier—and more dangerous.
Shota sighed. He had long grown accustomed to obeying this nephew of his, whose thoughts ran deep and whose actions were impossible to predict. The two silently made their way toward Fugaku's home.
Fugaku was clearly surprised by their sudden visit, especially after the recent shift in power and the turmoil in the Security Department. He led them into the Japanese-style room, his expression carrying its usual sternness and a faint, barely perceptible scrutiny.
