On the same day Kagami Uchiha knocked on Orochimaru's door, the two figures in power beneath Konoha's shadow and light also noticed, in their own ways, a somewhat unusual name on the list of students about to graduate.
Root's Dark Chamber
Shimura Danzō sat deep within the dim Root Base, with the latest evaluation reports for Ninja Academy graduates and prospective graduates spread before him. The murky yellow light illuminated half his face, while the other half remained buried in deep shadow, making his expression appear even more sinister. His fingers moved across the names, each accompanied by notes on potential rating, clan background, personality analysis, and an assessment of whether they were suitable for recruitment into Root.
His gaze paused briefly on one name: "Kyohaku Uchiha."
The notes that followed were lengthy, but filled entirely with negative terms: "Permanent disability in right foot, severely restricted mobility," "Taijutsu and Shuriken scores far below average," "Withdrawn and introverted personality, distant relationship with clan," "Chakra reserve assessment: below average for a Genin," "Aspiration: apply to remain at Konoha Hospital in a medical position."
Danzo's lips curled into an undisguised sneer, and he gave a nearly inaudible cold snort.
"Uchiha..." he muttered in a low voice, which echoed through the silent chamber, filled with the wariness and disgust he instinctively associated with that surname. "...And they produced such trash."
A lame Uchiha who, instead of thinking about how to overcome his disability and fight, wanted to become a medical ninja? It was simply a stain upon those eyes that might one day awaken! In his extreme view, the Uchiha Clan's power could only be brought to its true worth through battle, hatred, and darkness, becoming a weapon that guarded Konoha from the shadows. This sort of behavior—fleeing from battle and seeking comfort—was nothing but cowardice and degeneration to him.
"A medical ninja?" he repeated the phrase coldly, as though it were something filthy. "Hiding in the rear, fiddling with herbs and chakra—what use could that possibly be? He isn't even qualified to serve as nourishment for Root."
He did not even bother to examine the scattered positive comments farther down: "Chakra control assessment: excellent," "Medical Ninjutsu internship performance: exceeded expectations." In his eyes, a ninja unable to move quickly or engage in high-intensity combat—especially an Uchiha—had already lost most of his value and was not worth investing any resources in.
Without the slightest hesitation, his finger swept past the name "Kyohaku Uchiha," as if brushing away an insignificant speck of dust, and his eyes shifted to other names marked "excellent potential," "controllable personality," and "suitable for recruitment."
"Trash." That was his final verdict on the child he had never met, and he immediately cast the name from his mind.
Hokage's Office
At the same time, sunlight poured through the enormous windows of the office atop the Hokage Building, standing in stark contrast to Root's darkness.
The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, was reviewing documents as well, wisps of smoke rising from his pipe. A similar list lay before him, though it was thicker, and its notes placed greater emphasis on the students' overall development and future plans rather than simply evaluating them as tools.
His gaze also fell upon the name "Kyohaku Uchiha." He read the notes behind it: "Parents died in the aftermath of a mission," "Severe injury to right foot resulting in permanent disability," "Above-average grades (excellent theory, weak practical performance)," "Outstanding chakra control," "Performed well during internship in Konoha Hospital's Animal Training and Rehabilitation Class," "Applied to remain in the hospital's Medical Department after graduation."
Hiruzen Sarutobi set down his pipe and sighed softly. A complicated expression surfaced on his face, one that mingled regret, sympathy, and a trace of helplessness.
"Kyohaku Uchiha..." he murmured the name, seemingly able to picture a silent Uchiha orphan leaning on a crutch and struggling to survive beneath fate's cruel blows.
"He is a pitiful but strong child." He spoke with feeling. Both parents were dead, and he himself was disabled, yet rather than resent fate or blame others, he had found another path and a way forward through Medical Ninjutsu. That strength of character deserved recognition.
He supported Kyohaku's wish to remain at the hospital. Konoha Hospital truly needed more hands, especially medical ninja with good chakra control. If this child stayed in the rear, he could both make use of his strengths and avoid the brutal slaughter of the front lines. Perhaps that would be the best arrangement. It aligned with Hiruzen's long-held belief that every young sprout of Konoha should be protected whenever possible, especially with troubled times approaching.
Yet when he looked at the surname "Uchiha," the chord in the depths of his heart concerning the village's increasingly tense relationship with the Uchiha Clan was lightly plucked. An Uchiha choosing to stay away from battle and integrate into the village's medical system was, in itself, a signal worth pondering. Was he an outlier among the Uchiha? Or some... latent possibility of something better?
After pondering for a moment, he finally picked up his pen and wrote on Kyohaku Uchiha's application: "Special circumstances. Permitted to intern at the hospital; placement to be determined by performance." Unlike Orochimaru, he did not grant him special treatment outright, instead choosing a more procedural and reliable approach.
His feelings toward this child were complicated. There was sympathy and concern, but also a trace of scrutiny born from his position as Hokage, as well as faint hope. He hoped that this Uchiha, who had chosen another path, could truly integrate into Konoha rather than become another destabilizing factor.
But this was all he could do. As Hokage, he had far too many matters to consider. A disabled Uchiha child who had chosen to become a medical ninja was, on his vast chessboard, ultimately no more than an insignificant little piece that needed to be placed appropriately. His gaze soon shifted to the brighter names on the list, those who required more of his attention and guidance, such as... Kakashi Hatake.
Two lists, two perspectives, two utterly different attitudes—yet they reached a similar conclusion: disregard.
Whether it was Danzo's undisguised contempt or the Third Hokage's sympathy-bound, procedural arrangement, neither truly saw the energy and determination hidden behind the name "Kyohaku Uchiha," far beyond anything they could imagine.
And that was precisely what Kyohaku Uchiha needed most. In the shadows where no one paid attention, he could better weave his own web and grow in silence.
