Outside the hall, screams rang out one after another, like flesh being carved with a dull blade, making everyone's scalp tingle.
Heavy footsteps came from the main entrance, accompanied by some kind of labored panting.
Li Chenfeng's expression changed drastically. He no longer had the mind to fight over any inheritance.
He shouted sharply, "Everyone, stay alert! Something has come in!"
Before his words had even faded.
Su Yao backed out of the passageway, her face deathly pale.
She had wanted to sneak away and stop involving herself in this matter. She had even considered leaving the Starry Sky Temple outright, only to witness the horrific scene outside.
Right behind her came a staggering figure. The man was missing an arm, the severed stump at his shoulder a mangled mess of flesh and blood. He was covered in blood.
His voice trembled as he screamed, "Corpse Hound Clan... It's the Corpse Hound Clan's hunting squad! Everyone keeping watch outside is dead! They're all dead!"
The hall instantly erupted into chaos.
The Corpse Hound Clan!
If the Blood Cat Clan was humanity's natural enemy, then the Corpse Hound Clan was the nightmare of the entire human race!
These monsters, covered in rotting flesh and bearing dog heads, were born with deadly corpse poison. Even the poisonous mist released from their bodies could leave professionals of the same rank dizzy and greatly weaken their combat strength.
Worse still, their physiques were absurdly powerful. A Corpse Hound of the same rank could fight five humans alone without falling behind!
On the border battlefield.
Every year, countless elite humans died beneath the claws of these monsters.
And for young Corpse Hound Clan professionals who had just awakened, entering the Starry Sky Temple to hunt humans was their coming-of-age trial!
Outside the main entrance.
Five figures slowly walked in.
They stood a full head taller than ordinary adults, their bodies covered in grayish-green rotting flesh. In some places, stark white bone protruded through the decay.
Two rows of saliva-coated fangs jutted from their massive canine heads, while undisguised malice and hunger churned in their murky eyes.
The Corpse Hound at the front was even larger than its companions. Its muscles were dark brown, taut as obsidian, with visible power surging beneath its skin.
With every step it took, its paws branded a corrosive footprint into the floor, white smoke rising from it.
This was a royal-blooded Corpse Hound. The pressure radiating from it merely by standing there made more than half the people in the hall feel their legs go weak.
"Humans... there really are quite a lot of you."
The royal Corpse Hound bared its teeth in a savage grin. "Perfect. This king only needs seven more heads to complete my coming-of-age trial. You human pigs, hand over your heads obediently!"
Li Chenfeng's pupils constricted. He desperately suppressed the fear in his heart and shouted, "Don't let it scare you! We outnumber them ten to one! As long as we work together, it may not be impossible to—"
Before he could finish.
The royal Corpse Hound moved.
Without any warning.
Its black figure flashed, as fast as lightning, crossing ten meters in an instant. One claw slammed into the chest of an A-rank warrior at the front.
The warrior held up his shield, but before the Corpse Hound's claws, it might as well have been made of paper. Man and shield were sent flying together, crashing hard into the hall's stone wall.
His breastplate shattered. Three horrific wounds deep enough to expose bone appeared across his chest, and the flesh around them blackened and rotted at a visible rate.
Before he even hit the ground, he was already dead.
Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.
An A-rank defensive warrior had not even been able to withstand a single claw strike!
The Corpse Hound Clan's strength truly was as terrifying as the rumors claimed.
No wonder they could fight five opponents of the same rank alone. This was an utterly crushing gap in power!
The other four Corpse Hounds let out excited howls at the same time, lunging into the crowd like four grayish-green phantoms.
Li Chenfeng no longer cared about commanding anyone and retreated in panic.
The other team members fell into even greater disarray.
Everyone fought for themselves.
Screams and the clash of weapons blended into a chaotic din.
Jiang Chuan stood on the other side of the hall, expressionlessly watching the slaughter before him.
He withdrew his gaze and reached toward the pillars of light.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Three pillars of light vanished into his possession one after another.
Li Chenfeng caught sight of it from the corner of his eye, and his eyes nearly split with rage. "Jiang Chuan! You shameless bastard! We're risking our lives fighting here, and you're taking the chance to steal things?!"
Jiang Chuan did not even glance at him. Turning around, he said calmly, "Let's go. We don't need to do anything now."
Ling Aoshuang nodded and walked beside him toward the rear entrance.
"Trying to run?!"
The royal Corpse Hound's gaze passed over the crowd and landed on the two of them. It sneered coldly. "This king already said it. None of you human pigs are getting away!"
"Kill them."
The royal Corpse Hound let out a low growl. Two roars immediately sounded outside the rear entrance, followed by two grayish-green figures pouncing out of the darkness.
They were two ordinary Corpse Hounds that had circled around through the rear entrance. One from each side, their blood-dripping maws lunged straight for the pair's throats.
"Hmph."
Ling Aoshuang flicked her pale hand. Two icy-blue streaks shot from her fingertips, piercing precisely through the Corpse Hounds' brows.
The two monsters were still in midair when their rotting flesh rapidly froze. In the blink of an eye, they became two lumps of ice.
The moment they hit the ground, the ice sculptures shattered into fragments scattered across the floor.
The hall fell deathly silent.
Everyone, including the Corpse Hounds in the midst of slaughter, froze where they stood.
The royal Corpse Hound's pupils abruptly contracted, and for the first time, a grave expression appeared on its face.
The other humans, however, seemed to have grabbed hold of a lifeline and shouted at the two of them.
"Please, save us!"
"Classmates! Please! Take us with you!"
"You're so strong! Wouldn't killing these evil Corpse Hounds be easy for you?!"
"Classmates, we're the same kind! You can't just stand by and watch us die!"
Their voices rose one after another. Some begged, while others tried to guilt them into it.
They seemed to have completely forgotten.
Just moments ago.
They had been baring their ugly faces as they tried to seize the inheritance in Jiang Chuan's hands.
Jiang Chuan cast them an indifferent glance.
In his heart, he had always held onto a bottom line. That line restrained his desire to kill others and seize their talents.
It kept him from completely becoming a deranged murderous lunatic.
Therefore.
Jiang Chuan rarely wanted to kill.
But asking him to save a group of ungrateful selfish bastards was absolutely out of the question.
"I'll come back and collect your corpses."
He spoke blandly.
Naturally, he meant it. There were corpses belonging to people with talents no lower than B-rank, as well as an S-rank talent. He certainly would not let them go to waste.
With that, he turned away, and his figure vanished through the hole.
Li Chenfeng stared at the empty opening, then at the Corpse Hounds eyeing them hungrily from all around.
His expression was as ugly as if someone had slapped him across the face more than a dozen times in public.
His lips trembled. "N-No, don't be afraid! We have numbers! Fight these beasts to the death!"
But the royal Corpse Hound had already withdrawn its gaze. It licked the saliva from the corner of its mouth and fixed its eyes on him once more.
It grinned, thin strands of drool stretching from its fangs. "Kill these humans first, then go after those two interesting prey!"
