The convoy continued onward, jolting all the way.
Xiao Wang reckoned they were moving at only around twenty kilometers an hour.
"Sister Hua, how far is the destination?"
"About 120 kilometers."
Xiao Wang thought about it. At their current speed, if all went smoothly, they could make the round trip in a day.
The clouds overhead hung lower and lower. Though it was morning, the sky grew increasingly dark, as if evening had fallen.
Before long, raindrops began to fall.
They were light at first, but gradually grew denser and heavier until rain poured down in sheets.
Before nine in the morning, visibility ahead had become extremely poor. All three vehicles switched on their headlights and continued through the rain.
The potholes in the road quickly filled with water. As the vehicles passed over them, muddy water splashed more than a meter high.
To keep the vehicles from skidding or breaking down, they slowed even further.
Once the vehicles slowed, the jolting eased quite a bit. But Sister Hua showed no intention of letting go of Xiao Wang's arm. She still held it, occasionally leaning against him slightly. Every now and then, Xiao Wang could feel something soft pressing against his arm.
"Did you only recently join Zhongxing Martial Arts Hall?" Sister Hua asked.
"Sister Hua knows our martial arts hall too?"
"Of course. We've worked together many times."
"Oh, I only joined the hall recently. It hasn't even been a month."
"No wonder I didn't recognize you."
Sister Hua turned and studied Xiao Wang. "Then you must have some real ability. From what I know, Master Wei doesn't take disciples casually."
"I wouldn't call it taking me as a disciple. Master just gives me a few pointers."
"You're quite modest, little brother."
The rain grew heavier, and the vehicles slowed further.
Sister Hua finally withdrew her arm. Her eyes remained fixed on the road ahead. "Moving this slowly isn't a good thing."
A Qiang gripped the steering wheel tightly with both hands. "Sister Hua, should we wait here until the rain stops?"
"Who knows when it'll stop? What if it rains for three days and three nights? We can wait, but the client can't. Besides, we're outside the city. Waiting here would only be more dangerous. Who knows how many eyes are watching us right now?"
"But at this speed, I'm afraid things ahead won't be peaceful," A Qiang said worriedly.
"Keep going for now. We'll watch the situation as we move."
Xiao Wang did not know exactly what they meant, but he could sense a trace of tension in their conversation.
He trusted the instincts of veterans like them, so he immediately raised his guard and kept a close eye on the situation outside.
Three hours passed. The convoy had covered roughly seventy kilometers when the rain finally began to ease, leaving only a few scattered drops drifting down.
But the road became even rougher. The rain had turned the already uneven surface slicker, reducing the tires' grip and slowing them down further.
By then, the convoy had left the flat terrain around Mount Yuan City and entered the mountains.
Sister Hua once again slipped her arm beneath Xiao Wang's armpit and hooked it tightly around his.
"Little brother, do you have a girlfriend?" Sister Hua suddenly asked.
"Huh?"
"What do you mean, huh? I'm asking if you have a girlfriend."
"No," Xiao Wang answered.
"Want your sister to introduce you to one?"
"Sister Hua, you're joking, right?" Xiao Wang said, turning to look at her. The movement of her chest was still bouncing fiercely.
"I'm serious. Why would I be joking? With your looks, build, and age, it'd be such a waste for premium stock like you not to have a girlfriend."
Xiao Wang: ...
Looks like Sister Hua has quite an appetite.
Just as the two were chatting and laughing, the vehicle ahead suddenly stopped.
A Qiang slammed on the brakes as well.
Fortunately, they were not moving fast, and all three quickly steadied themselves.
"What happened?"
Sister Hua immediately pulled back her arm, her tone full of vigilance.
After stopping the vehicle, A Qiang immediately drew the pistol from his waist, chambered a round, and stared intently out the window.
"Get out and see what's going on," Sister Hua said to Xiao Wang.
Xiao Wang paused, then opened the door and got out.
Sister Hua followed him out, then turned back to remind A Qiang, "Don't turn off the engine."
"Understood."
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
Xiang Menqing from the vehicle behind came over as well. "What happened?"
His expression was equally stern.
They had stopped outside the city while carrying cargo. Everyone knew how dangerous that was. Even Xiang Menqing ignored everything else, focused only on finding out what had happened.
The three of them walked forward. After going around the first cargo truck, they saw Linghu Ke standing in front of it, while Zhang Jian remained in the driver's seat with the engine running.
"What is it?" Sister Hua asked Linghu Ke.
Linghu Ke stepped aside. Only when the three moved closer did they see a large boulder blocking the road.
"I just checked. It was probably caused by the rain, not placed here by someone," Linghu Ke added.
After hearing that, Sister Hua and Xiang Menqing both relaxed slightly, though one of Xiang Menqing's hands remained gripping the handle of the gun at his waist.
"Come on, give me a hand. Let's clear it out quickly." As she spoke, Sister Hua stepped forward first and gripped the bottom of the boulder.
The other three stepped up as well. Working together, they quickly moved the boulder out of the road.
"All right, let's get moving."
After Sister Hua spoke, they rinsed their hands in the water-filled potholes and quickly returned to their respective vehicles.
As Xiao Wang walked back, he felt an unfriendly gaze on him. He did not even need to look to know it was Xiang Menqing.
"Sister Hua, why don't I ride in your vehicle? If there's danger, I'd be much more useful." Xiang Menqing still refused to give up, displaying the pistol at his waist as he spoke.
"You and Old Ding should be more careful yourselves. You're at the back, and that's no less dangerous than being in front."
After saying that, Sister Hua got directly into the driver's seat and shut the door.
Xiang Menqing looked at Sister Hua's back, especially at her butt.
What a knockout.
Thinking that, Xiang Menqing turned and returned to the third vehicle.
After getting in, Sister Hua found Xiao Wang already seated in the middle.
She did not say anything. Once she was settled, the convoy soon set off again.
Although the rain had stopped, the road remained slick and full of potholes.
The jolting continued.
Sitting in the middle, Xiao Wang realized once the vehicle began bouncing again that there was really nowhere for him to hold on.
Seeing this, Sister Hua, who was holding onto the handle, smiled and took one of Xiao Wang's hands. She pulled it beneath her armpit and hooked it around her arm.
"Hold on tight. Don't affect A Qiang's driving."
As Sister Hua spoke, she did not look at Xiao Wang, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the road ahead.
After hearing that, Xiao Wang did not stand on ceremony and gripped Sister Hua's arm tightly.
But this time, that occasional soft sensation was no longer coming from his arm. It was pressing against the back of his hand.
The feeling was much clearer.
Good car. Sure enough, it isn't afraid of coasting in neutral.
