Ch. 201Setting Off, Vacation Time

After Ash and his friends left Pallet Town, Gary teased Rosa about their vacation before revealing that he and Rosa and Hilda would travel to the Alola Region. They boarded their flight, setting off for the vacation destination.

Ch. 203Island Guardian Deity

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda spent their first day in Alola enjoying the beach and local food before Tapu Koko led them into a secluded forest. There, Tapu Koko gave Gary a Z-Ring, and Gary decided to visit an Island Kahuna the next day so Rosa could try to earn one too.

  • Gary, Rosa, and Hilda spent the day playing on Melemele Island's beach and sampling Alola cuisine.
  • On their way back to the hotel, the three spotted Tapu Koko, which signaled for them to follow it.
  • Gary led Rosa and Hilda to a secluded forest, where Tapu Koko presented him with a bracelet.

Gary took Rosa and Hilda to the Pokémon School on Melemele Island to ask an elder about Tapu Koko and the Z-Ring. They met the student Mallow, who offered to guide them, but an angry voice interrupted before Gary could say who they were looking for.

  • Gary told Rosa and Hilda they were visiting Alola's best Pokémon School to ask an elder about what had happened the previous night.
  • Rosa recalled her unhappy school days, and Gary and Hilda teased her before they entered the school grounds.

Ch. 205Encounter with Team Skull

Gary and his friends encountered Team Skull outside the Pokémon School, where Gary defeated their three Salandit with Tyranitar. Team Skull fled, and four people called out to Mallow as the group prepared to meet them.

  • Mallow introduced Team Skull as local troublemakers after three masked members blocked the way to the Pokémon School.
  • Gary challenged Team Skull after their blue-haired leader demanded that he hand over a Pokémon.
  • Gary sent out Tyranitar, which blocked the three Salandit's combined Flamethrower without being harmed.
  • Tyranitar used Stone Edge to defeat all three Salandit, and Team Skull recalled them and fled.
  • Mallow praised Gary, and four figures appeared behind the group and called out to her.

Ch. 206Meeting the People of the Alola Region

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda met Mallow’s friends and Professor Kukui at the Pokémon School, where their achievements impressed the Alola students. Professor Kukui began asking Gary whom he had come to find.

  • Kiawe, Sophocles, Lana, and Lillie reunited with Mallow and thanked Gary, Rosa, and Hilda for protecting her from Team Skull.
  • Gary introduced his Tyranitar, which frightened Lillie, and agreed to battle Kiawe another time.
  • Professor Kukui arrived, and Gary explained the Alola greeting to Rosa and Hilda.
  • Professor Kukui recognized Gary as the Ever Grande Conference champion and told the students that Rosa and Hilda had placed second and third.
  • Professor Kukui began asking Gary who he had come to find at the Pokémon School.

Ch. 207Chengye Oak

Gary visited Principal Chengye Oak at the Pokémon School to ask about the Z-Ring Tapu Koko had given him. After hearing how Gary received it, Chengye recognized it likely came from Melemele Island’s Island Kahuna and considered what to do next.

  • Professor Kukui explained that Gary was Professor Oak’s grandson and Chengye Oak’s grandnephew, then led Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to the principal’s office.
  • Gary greeted Chengye, introduced Rosa and Hilda, and promised he would never bully them.
  • Gary showed Chengye and Professor Kukui the Z-Ring Tapu Koko had given him the previous night and described their encounter.

Ch. 208An Invitation from Professor Kukui

Gary asked Professor Kukui for help obtaining a Z-Ring, and Professor Kukui arranged for them to meet Melemele Island’s Kahuna the next day. He then invited Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to assist in his battle class, where Gary began the promised match against Kiawe.

  • Principal Chengye suggested that Gary ask Professor Kukui for help with his Z-Ring, and Professor Kukui agreed to arrange a meeting with the Island Kahuna for the next day.
  • Professor Kukui invited Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to serve as teaching assistants in a Pokémon battle class, and all three agreed.
  • Professor Kukui brought the three visitors to the battle field and introduced them to Kiawe, Mallow, Sophocles, and the other students as their battle opponents.
  • Kiawe challenged Gary to the battle they had previously agreed on, and Gary accepted.

Ch. 209Kiawe and the Training Match

Gary used a training match against Kiawe to demonstrate the gap between their Pokémon and advise Kiawe on improving Turtonator’s moves, stamina, and commands. After Kiawe accepted the feedback, Sophocles and Rosa volunteered for the next match.

  • Kiawe sent out Turtonator, and Gary answered with Aggron for their one-Pokémon training match.
  • Turtonator’s Fire Spin and Flamethrower failed to break through Aggron’s Dragon Claw as Gary advised Kiawe on his attacks.
  • Gary kept Aggron on defense until Turtonator ran out of stamina and could no longer battle.
  • Gary identified weaknesses in Turtonator’s move control and stamina, and in Kiawe’s command ability; Kiawe thanked him and Professor Kukui encouraged him to improve.

Ch. 210Island Kahuna

Professor Kukui brought Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to Iki Town to meet Melemele Island Kahuna Hala. Hala approved Gary’s use of the Z-Ring Tapu Koko had given him, but began to explain that Gary still needed to do something first.

  • Professor Kukui drove Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to Iki Town and explained the role of Alola’s Island Kahunas and how the Island Guardian Deities chose them.
  • Professor Kukui introduced the group to Hala at his villa, where Hala asked Gary to recount his encounter with Tapu Koko.
  • Gary told Hala that Tapu Koko had given him a Z-Ring, and Hala explained that Tapu Koko had likely been interested in him.
  • Hala recognized the Z-Ring as one that had belonged to him and confirmed that Gary needed an Island Kahuna’s permission to use it.
  • Hala approved Gary’s use of the Z-Ring because Tapu Koko had already approved him, but said Gary still needed to do something first.

Ch. 211Island Challenge

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda agreed to take part in Alola’s Island Challenge after Hala offered them the chance to earn Z-Rings and Z-Crystals. Hala scheduled their first trials for the next day, while he and Professor Kukui discussed Kukui’s plans for an Alola Pokémon League.

  • Hala agreed to let Gary use a Z-Ring and invited him to join the Island Challenge to earn a Z-Crystal.
  • Rosa and Hilda asked to participate too, and Hala accepted them because they had encountered Tapu Koko.

Ch. 212Hala's Trial

Hala began Gary, Rosa, and Hilda’s first trial, sending them into a cave to defeat a Raticate colony and its Totem Pokémon under a one-Pokémon-per-trainer restriction. The three entered the cave, where hundreds of Alolan Raticate and Rattata surrounded them, and sent out their Pokémon to begin the challenge.

  • At Hala’s Country Villa, Hala announced that Gary, Rosa, and Hilda’s first trial was starting.
  • Hala led them to a cave and explained that they had to defeat the Raticate and Rattata inside, including the Totem Raticate, and obtain their Z-Crystals.
  • Professor Kukui explained what made a Totem Pokémon special, and Hala restricted each of the three trainers to one Pokémon for the trial.
  • Hala estimated that several hundred Raticate and Rattata lived in the cave, and Gary, Rosa, and Hilda agreed to face them.
  • Inside the cave, Gary identified the black Pokémon as Alolan Raticate and Rattata and explained their regional adaptations.
  • As the Pokémon closed in, Gary, Rosa, and Hilda threw their Poké Balls and sent out their respective Pokémon.

Ch. 213Completion of the Trial

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda defeated the Raticate and Rattata swarm in the cave, impressing Hala and Professor Kukui with their strength. Gary faced the Totem Raticate alone and began battling it with Aggron.

  • Gary, Rosa, and Hilda sent out Aggron and two Excadrill to face the rodent horde.
  • The three Trainers used Sandstorm and Stone Edge to knock out hundreds of Raticate and Rattata.
  • The Totem Raticate appeared after its underlings were defeated, and Gary chose to battle it with Aggron.
  • Aggron endured the Totem Raticate’s attacks while Gary raised its defense, then countered with Stone Edge and Earth Power.

Ch. 214The Final Trial

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda defeated Totem Raticate and received Darkinium Z crystals, while Rosa and Hilda also received Z-Rings from Hala. The next day, they began preparations for Melemele Island’s Grand Trial, where they would battle Hala.

  • Gary ordered Aggron to strike the halted Totem Raticate with Flash Cannon, knocking it unconscious and ending the trial battle.
  • Totem Raticate recovered, returned with three Dark-type Z-Crystals, and gave one to each of Gary, Rosa, and Hilda.
  • Hala confirmed the trial was complete, scheduled their final trial for the next day, and gave Rosa and Hilda Z-Rings.
  • Professor Kukui taught the three how to perform Z-Move gestures and left them instructional videos before returning home.
  • The next day, Gary, Rosa, and Hilda learned that the Grand Trial would be a battle against Hala, preceded by prayers at an altar.

Ch. 215Battle with Hala, Part One

Gary began his Grand Trial battle against Island Kahuna Hala, who sent out Crabominable while Gary chose his Red Gyarados. The fight was still underway as Crabominable closed in to attack with Ice Hammer.

  • Gary, Rosa, and Hilda arrived at the Iki Town battlefield with Hala and greeted Professor Kukui and the Pokémon School group.
  • Professor Kukui explained that he had brought Kiawe and the others to observe the Grand Trial, and Gary agreed it would not disturb the battle.
  • Gary volunteered to battle first, and Professor Kukui announced that each side could use two Pokémon.
  • Hala sent out his level 43 Crabominable, and Gary answered with his Red Gyarados, surprising the spectators with the Shiny Pokémon.
  • Crabominable and Red Gyarados traded Focus Blast, Dragon Rage, Ice Beam, and Flamethrower before Gyarados used Hydro Pump and Crabominable dodged it.
  • Hala ordered Crabominable to strike Red Gyarados with Ice Hammer as Gary waited with a knowing smile.

Ch. 216Battle Against Hala, Part 2

Gary defeated Hala's Crabominable with Red Gyarados, then battled Hala's Hariyama with Electivire. The match reached its climax as Hala unleashed Hariyama's Z-Move, All-Out Pummeling, against Electivire.

  • Gary's Red Gyarados swept Crabominable away with Surf and knocked it out with Dragon Pulse.
  • Hala sent out his level 51 Hariyama, and Gary switched Red Gyarados for Electivire.
  • Gary used Electivire's Thunderbolt to activate Motor Drive, then countered Hariyama's attacks with Protect, Brick Break, and Iron Tail.
  • Hala had Hariyama use Belly Drum, while Gary boosted Electivire's attack with Bulk Up.
  • Hala activated his Z-Ring and launched All-Out Pummeling at Electivire.
  • Gary urged Electivire to give everything it had as Hariyama's Z-Move rushed toward it.

Ch. 217Passing the Trial

Gary defeated Hala in the Grand Trial and received a Fighting-type Z-Crystal, then Rosa and Hilda passed their trials over the next two days. After the group celebrated in Iki Town, Gary stepped into the courtyard at night, where a fierce gust of wind startled him.

  • Gary's Electivire broke through Hariyama's attacks and knocked it out, winning Gary the Grand Trial.
  • Hala praised Gary, declared the trial complete, and gave him a Fighting-type Z-Crystal; he postponed Rosa and Hilda's trials until the next day so they could rest.
  • A dark figure watched Gary's battle from the forest before silently leaving.
  • Over the following two days, Rosa and Hilda defeated Hala and earned their own Fighting-type Z-Crystals.
  • Hala hosted a celebration at his home in Iki Town, where Gary, Rosa, Hilda, Professor Kukui, Kiawe's group, and Principal Chengye shared food and stories.
  • After the celebration, Gary went into the courtyard at night, where a fierce gust of wind swept past him.

Ch. 218Reunion with Tapu Koko

Gary followed Tapu Koko into the forest, where the Guardian Deity gave him a Water-type Z-Crystal and tested Blastoise’s Hydro Vortex. Tapu Koko left unharmed, and Gary headed back planning to obtain a Dragonium Z so Rayquaza could try a Z-Move.

  • Gary spotted Tapu Koko outside Iki Town and followed it into a forest clearing.
  • Tapu Koko gave Gary a Water-type Z-Crystal and challenged him and Blastoise to use it against it.
  • Gary and Blastoise performed Hydro Vortex, but Tapu Koko blocked the attack without injury.
  • Tapu Koko departed after watching the Z-Move, and Rayquaza told Gary it wanted to test a Z-Crystal’s power.
  • Gary agreed to seek a Dragonium Z for Rayquaza and returned to his lodgings in high spirits.

Ch. 219Adventure in the Forest

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda visited a forest on Melemele Island to explore Alolan Pokémon. After Gary warned them away from a dangerous Bewear, they spotted a bolt of golden lightning nearby.

  • Rosa persuaded Gary and Hilda to go explore a forest, and Gary used a map to lead them there.
  • Gary, Rosa, and Hilda admired the forest and saw Pokémon including Grubbin, Oricorio, and Cutiefly.
  • Rosa tried to approach a waving Bewear, but Gary stopped her and explained that it was dangerous.
  • After seeing Bewear chop down a thick tree, Rosa hurried away with Gary and Hilda.
  • Gary noticed a bolt of golden lightning nearby.

Ch. 220The Injured Zeraora

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda found an injured Zeraora facing a Salazzle and several Salandit on Melemele Island. Gary drove off the attackers, but Zeraora collapsed from its severe wounds, leaving Gary to decide how to save it.

  • Gary recognized a powerful Thunderbolt and led Rosa and Hilda toward its source, where they found Zeraora confronting a Salazzle and several Salandit.
  • Hilda noticed Zeraora was badly wounded, and Gary determined that its injuries had not been caused by the Salandit.
  • Gary stepped in to protect Zeraora, but the Salazzle and Salandit attacked instead of leaving.
  • Gary sent out Blastoise, whose Hydro Pump defeated the attackers and drove them away.
  • Zeraora collapsed, and Gary found its injuries were life-threatening; when Rosa and Hilda asked what to do, he said he would handle it.
