Chapter Summaries

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda took shelter from a blizzard in a cave and decided to explore it when the storm kept them from traveling. The chapter ended as Rosa discovered something amazing deeper inside and called Gary and Hilda over to see.

• Rosa spotted a cave, and Gary and Hilda followed her inside to escape the blizzard.
• Gary led the group deeper into the cave, where they made a fire, cooked lunch, and rested.
• Hilda reported that the snowstorm was still raging, so Gary, Rosa, and Hilda prepared to stay in the cave overnight.
• Hilda suggested exploring the cave, and Gary agreed while Rosa eagerly led the way deeper inside.
• Rosa reached a bend, discovered something amazing, and called Gary and Hilda over.

Gary, Hilda, and Rosa explored a glowing, icy cave and encountered an Alolan Sandshrew, which attacked after overhearing Rosa reject the idea of catching it. The Sandshrew summoned dozens of reinforcements, and a much larger figure appeared behind them.

• Rosa led Gary and Hilda deeper into the cave, where they discovered glowing moss and a towering ice formation.
• A snowball rolled toward the group, and Gary stopped it before it transformed into an Alolan Sandshrew.

• The Totem Alolan Ninetales agreed to let Rosa and Hilda choose Vulpix if the Pokémon consented, explaining that it trusted Gary because of his genuine affection and the blessing of Viridian Forest.

• Gary explained that Team Skull lived in Po Town and that Ula'ula Island's Island Kahuna stayed there partly to keep an eye on them.
• Plumeria arrived with three Team Skull grunts, who recognized Gary's group and complained that they had been bullied before.
• Rosa admitted that she had beaten the grunts and stepped forward to face Plumeria's challenge.

• Rosa used Aggron’s Metal Sound and Flash Cannon to defeat Plumeria’s Golbat.
• Plumeria sent out Salazzle, which launched a surprise Flamethrower at Rosa, but Hilda blocked it with Zebstrika’s Thunderbolt.
• Hilda defeated Salazzle with Thunder and Wild Charge, forcing Plumeria to recall it.
• Rosa and Hilda mocked Plumeria and Team Skull, and an unknown voice called the arguing group unbearably noisy.

Guzma arrived while Rosa and Hilda confronted Team Skull, and Gary revealed Guzma’s history as Hala and Professor Kukui’s former fellow student. Guzma sent out his Elite Four-level Golisopod to fight Gary, whose Arcanine gained the upper hand in their opening exchange.

• Guzma appeared, and Team Skull’s grunts greeted him as their Boss.
• Gary identified Guzma and told Rosa and Hilda about his history with Hala and Professor Kukui.
• Angered by the others discussing his past, Guzma challenged Gary and sent out Golisopod.

Gary and Arcanine defeated Guzma and Golisopod in battle, sending Team Skull away. As Gary, Rosa, and Hilda prepared to resume their search for Ula'ula Island's Island Kahuna, Gary noticed someone hiding behind a wall, and the person stepped out.

• Gary used Arcanine's Extreme Speed to evade Golisopod's First Impression and strike it with Flame Charge.
• Gary's Arcanine dodged Golisopod's Fury Cutter with Agility and knocked it out with Flare Blitz.

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda arrived at the Ruins of Abundance to face Ula'ula Island's Grand Trial, where Nanu required each challenger to defeat three of his Pokémon with only one Pokémon. Gary began the first battle against Nanu, who sent out Krookodile, and Gary chose his own Pokémon to face it.

• Nanu welcomed Gary, Rosa, and Hilda at the Ruins of Abundance after they crossed Haina Desert to reach the battlefield.
• Acerola introduced herself as the Grand Trial's referee and apologized for Nanu's demanding approach.
• Nanu explained that each challenger had to defeat three of his Pokémon using only one Pokémon, and Rosa, Hilda, and Gary accepted the rule.
• Acerola announced the one-against-three battle between Gary and Nanu, and Nanu sent out Krookodile.
• Gary checked Krookodile's data and threw a Poké Ball to send out his chosen Pokémon.

Gary's Tyranitar defeated Nanu's Krookodile and began battling his Sableye. Tyranitar pushed through Sableye's Dark Pulse and closed in, as Gary started to give another command.

• Gary sent out Tyranitar, which resisted Krookodile's Intimidate and blocked its Dark Pulse, Sand Tomb, and Shadow Ball with Dragon Claw and Iron Defense.
• Gary boosted Tyranitar with Dragon Dance, then used Stone Edge to force Krookodile to leap out of Sand Tomb and hit it with Dragon Pulse.
• Acerola declared Krookodile unable to battle, and Nanu sent out Sableye as his second Pokémon.
• Gary ordered Tyranitar to create a Sandstorm and use Dragon Dance while Sableye searched for it and attacked with Shadow Claw.
• Tyranitar beat Sableye back with Dragon Claw, then used Iron Defense to charge through its Dark Pulse and reach it.

Gary defeated Nanu’s Alolan Persian with Tyranitar’s Continental Crush, passing Ula'ula Island’s Grand Trial. Nanu gave Gary the Dark-type Z-Crystal as proof of his victory.

• Tyranitar knocked Nanu’s Sableye out of battle with Fire Punch, giving Gary a second win.
• Nanu sent out his Alolan Persian, but its attacks failed to break through Tyranitar’s boosted defenses.
• Nanu used Persian’s Black Hole Eclipse, and Gary countered with Tyranitar’s Continental Crush, which crushed the Z-Move and struck Persian.
• Acerola declared Gary the winner of the Grand Trial after Persian was unable to battle.
• Nanu congratulated Gary and handed him the Dark-type Z-Crystal.

After Gary received an Electrium Z from Nanu, Rosa and Hilda passed Ula'ula Island's Grand Trial and the three chose to keep sightseeing. Their peaceful trip was interrupted when Professor Kukui called Gary and asked for urgent help, but he had not yet explained what had happened.

• Gary told Nanu he already had a Darkinium Z, so Nanu gave him an Electrium Z instead.
• Nanu scheduled Rosa and Hilda's Grand Trials for two days later, and both passed their challenges and received the Z-Crystals they wanted.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda decided to continue sightseeing on Ula'ula Island, where Rosa reminded Gary of his promise to stay.
