Chapter Summaries

Gary and Blastoise defeated Bertha’s Nidoking in a battle, and Bertha advised Gary to stay alert until an opponent was truly unable to fight. Rosa and Hilda then battled Bertha, and afterward Bertha praised all three trainers and asked what they planned to do next.

• Gary had Blastoise use Rapid Spin to avoid Nidoking’s attack, then followed with Flash Cannon and Water Pulse.

• Zero learned that Giratina had risen again and entered the Distortion World through the river passage with Magnemite.
• A Twister pulled Gary, Ash, Shaymin, and the others into the Distortion World, where Gary explained his plan to help Giratina escape.

Gary, Rayquaza, and Giratina destroyed Zero’s Sky Fortress, ending Zero’s life and freeing Giratina. After Giratina returned to the Distortion World, Gary and his friends reached a field of Gracidea Flowers, where Shaymin said goodbye and flew away with the other Shaymin.

• Zero retreated to the Sky Fortress and attacked Gary, Rayquaza, and Giratina, but Rayquaza and Giratina destroyed its mechanical arms.

• The Mysterious Girl hypnotized Rosa, Hilda, and Dawn, but Gary used Aura Power and Viridian Power to break the hypnosis and make her flee.
• Gary told the girls that the Mysterious Girl might be a ghost because he had sensed no Aura from her.
• Professor Rowan revealed that workers had uncovered a mysterious cave behind the ruins, and Brock warned him that Ash, Gary, and the others were still heading toward the ruins.

Gary rescued Ash and Aoi from the Mysterious Girl’s hypnosis, but a strange passage opened and began pulling them and their Pokémon inside. He sent Ash, Aoi, Pikachu, Shinx, and Dusknoir to safety, then was dragged into the passage himself as the Mysterious Girl disappeared after him.

• Gary slapped Ash and Aoi awake and revealed that the Mysterious Girl had hypnotized them.
• The Mysterious Girl transformed the cave entrance into a strange passage whose suction pulled Gary, Ash, Aoi, Pikachu, and Shinx toward it.
• Rosa, Hilda, and Dawn arrived, but Gary warned them to stay back as Dusknoir appeared and shielded the group from the suction.
• The Mysterious Girl sent energy tentacles from the passage to attack Dusknoir and reach for Gary and the others.

After Gary was pulled into the Spirit World, Professor Rowan and the others waited for Giratina to help bring him back. Gary explored the ghost-filled realm with Zeraora and encountered a mysterious floating figure just as he prepared to leave.

• Professor Rowan said he could not enter the Spirit World himself, and Ash asked whether Giratina could do so.
• Rosa told Professor Rowan about their encounter with Giratina, and he stayed at the ruins with Ash and the others while the other assistants went down the mountain.
• Gary arrived in the Spirit World and summoned Zeraora when ghosts surrounded him.

Gary discovered that the blood-tearing ghost was a Gengar and learned that all passages from the Spirit World were closed. Gengar joined Gary as his Pokémon, and Gary called upon Giratina to open a way out.
