Chapter Summaries

Gary returned from the Spirit World with Giratina’s help and reunited with Rosa, Hilda, and the others. As the group headed back to the research institute, Professor Rowan showed interest in Gary’s Spirit World photos, while Gary hinted that he wanted something in exchange.

• Gary explained to Giratina that he had accidentally entered the Spirit World, and Giratina agreed to take him back to the Real World.
• Rosa, Hilda, Professor Rowan, Ash, Dawn, Brock, and Aoi waited anxiously until Giratina emerged from a passage with Gary on its back.
• Gary reunited with Rosa and Hilda, then thanked the group for worrying about him.
• Giratina returned to the Distortion World, and Professor Rowan led everyone back toward the research institute.
• Gary offered Professor Rowan photos from the Spirit World and asked him to show some sincerity in return.

Professor Rowan’s Summer Seminar ended with a Pokémon Triathlon in which students raced through a forest, crossed a lake, and ran to the finish with their own Pokémon. Gary won, while Ash and Aoi took second and third, giving the Red Group all three top places.

• Professor Rowan and the assistant teachers explained the triathlon’s stages, rules, and scoring before leading the students to the starting line.
• Professor Rowan started the race, and Gary quickly reached the Poké Balls, drawing an Arcanine and riding it through the forest.
• Gary reached the lake first, traded Arcanine for a Gyarados, and crossed ahead of Ash and the other competitors.

After the Summer Seminar ended, Professor Rowan gave Gary a Riolu and a Lucario Mega Stone as promised gifts. He then told Gary he had one more matter he needed help with.

• Professor Rowan announced that the Red Group had won the Pokémon Triathlon, delivered his closing remarks, and gave each student a Commemorative Certificate.
• The students celebrated at a Bonfire Party, while Professor Rowan called Gary aside to ask about the Summer Seminar.
• Gary said he had enjoyed the seminar and reminded Professor Rowan about the promised gift.
• Professor Rowan gave Gary the Riolu he had chosen earlier in the seminar and a Lucario Mega Stone in return for Spirit World information.

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda traveled toward Celestic Town so Gary could visit Professor Carolina and deliver materials for Professor Rowan. They camped beside a forest stream, where they met Fantina, who joined them for dinner and said she would return to Hearthome City to accept their Gym challenge.

• Gary told Rosa and Hilda that he planned to visit Professor Carolina in Celestic Town and deliver Professor Rowan's materials, and he revealed that Carolina was Cynthia's grandmother.
• Rosa and Hilda hurried Gary along after learning that Cynthia might be in Celestic Town.
• After several days of travel, Gary chose to camp beside a stream because the nearest town was too far away to reach before nightfall.
• Gary heard someone approaching and called out, and Fantina appeared, explaining that the smell of their food had drawn her over.
• Gary and the others recognized Fantina as Hearthome Gym's Leader and discussed her absence from the Gym; Fantina promised to return and face their challenge.

Gary checked the rewards for catching Gengar and Riolu, then traveled with Rosa, Hilda, and Fantina to a nearby town. He challenged Fantina to a battle for training, and the chapter ended as their one-on-one match began with her sending out Mismagius.

• Gary opened his reward packs, used Aptitude Enhancement Cards to raise Riolu and Staravia to Champion level, gave Riolu a Black Belt, and planned to give Gengar the Ghost-type Energy Crystal.
• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda set out for a nearby town with Fantina and challenged her to battles, which she agreed to hold after they arrived.

• Gary sent out Staravia, which used Double Team to evade Mismagius's attacks and confuse Fantina.
• Staravia's copies attacked with Air Cutter while the real Staravia waited for Protect to end, then struck Mismagius with Brave Bird and defeated it.
• After the battle, Staravia evolved into Staraptor, and Rosa and Hilda congratulated Gary.
• Fantina congratulated Gary and said she wanted a proper battle, and Gary suggested they could battle during the Gym Challenge.

After losing to Gary, Rosa, and Hilda, Fantina explained that she had left Hearthome Gym to train and develop a battle style combining Gym battles with Pokémon Contests. Gary challenged her for abandoning her Gym Leader duties, and Fantina admitted she had forgotten to find a substitute.

Meanwhile, Ash and his companions arrived at the town Gary’s group had just left, and the two groups missed each other.

• Gary, Rosa, and Hilda left town for Celestic Town after discussing Fantina’s idea, while Ash, Dawn, and Brock arrived from the opposite direction and decided to stay the night.
• Gary’s group reached bustling Celestic Town, and Gary explained its history and its ties to Cynthia and Drasna.
• Professor Carolina greeted Gary’s group and accepted the documents they had brought from Professor Rowan.
• Gary’s group planned to check into the Pokémon Center and explore town, and Carolina invited them to visit her historical research institute in a few days.

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda delayed leaving Celestic Town to visit its Historical Research Institute, and Ash's group joined them after learning Team Galactic had stolen the Adamant Orb. At the institute, they met Cynthia, and Gary explained that Professor Carolina was her grandmother.

Gary and the others visited Professor Carolina’s research institute, where they learned about the Lake Guardians and viewed an ancient mural. Cyrus steered the group toward the Lustrous Orb, and Professor Carolina opened its sealed chamber, while Gary kept an eye on Cyrus and warned the disguised Team Rocket Trio.

• Professor Carolina led Gary, Cyrus, and the others into the institute, while Gary secretly made preparations and the disguised Team Rocket Trio infiltrated the building.
• Dawn recognized Mesprit on the ancient mural, and Ash and Gary confirmed they had encountered Uxie at the lakes.

• Cyrus questioned Ash, Dawn, and Gary about sensing the Lustrous Orb, then spoke of his supposed pursuit of a peaceful first world.
• Cyrus's timer reached zero, but the planned explosion at the Celestic Town Ruins did not happen.
• Saturn ordered Team Galactic to launch a Sucker Punch against the research institute, and Officer Jenny warned the group that it was under attack.
• Professor Carolina and Cynthia considered moving the Lustrous Orb, but Gary urged them to stay and face the attackers.
• Gary hinted that Cyrus had ulterior motives, and Cynthia, Professor Carolina, Rosa, Hilda, Ash, and the others stood with him to protect the Orb.

Gary exposed Cyrus as Team Galactic’s leader and revealed that Gengar had stopped the group’s attack at the Celestic Town Ruins. Cyrus confronted Gary’s group over the Lustrous Orb and attacked, but after his Golbat were defeated, he declared his aim to create a peaceful world belonging to himself and prepared to fight Cynthia and the others.

• Gary revealed that he had identified Cyrus at the research institute and had sent Gengar to capture Team Galactic members and secure the explosives at the Celestic Town Ruins.
• Officer Jenny ordered the police to arrest the captured Team Galactic members, while Gary and the others chased Cyrus from the research institute.
• Gary’s group caught up with Cyrus and Saturn in the lobby, where Cyrus admitted he was Team Galactic’s Boss and demanded the Lustrous Orb.
• Rosa, Hilda, Ash, Dawn, and Brock defeated Cyrus’s attacking Golbat while the police restrained Team Galactic’s grunts outside.
• Professor Carolina confronted Cyrus about his deception, and he declared that he wanted a peaceful world that belonged to him alone.
• Cynthia vowed to stop Cyrus, and Cyrus sent out a Pokémon to begin the fight.

Gary fought Saturn while Cynthia battled Cyrus, and Shiny Metagross swiftly defeated Saturn’s Toxicroak and Bronzong. Saturn was left watching both Pokémon fall as Cyrus remained on the back foot against Cynthia.

• Cynthia sent out Garchomp to battle Cyrus’s Crobat while Gary faced Saturn.
• Saturn sent out Toxicroak, and Gary answered with Shiny Metagross.
• Shiny Metagross endured Toxicroak’s Shadow Ball, then defeated it with Psychic and Bullet Punch.
• Saturn sent out Bronzong, but Shiny Metagross broke free from its Psychic and struck Bronzong with Dark Pulse.
• Bronzong landed beside the defeated Toxicroak, and Saturn cried out to it.

Cynthia, Gary, and the others defeated Team Galactic at the Celestic Town Historical Research Institute, but Cyrus and Saturn escaped using Skuntank’s gas. Aboard their aircraft, Cyrus abandoned the Lustrous Orb operation for now and turned Team Galactic’s attention to the Lake Guardians.

• Gary's Shiny Metagross defeated Saturn's Pokémon, while Cynthia defeated Cyrus's team and the others overcame the remaining Team Galactic members.
• Officer Jenny's police surrounded Cyrus and Saturn, but Cyrus refused to surrender and summoned Skuntank to fill the hall with gas.
• Cyrus and Saturn escaped during the gas, and Professor Carolina confirmed that the Lustrous Orb remained safe.
• Cyrus regrouped aboard an aircraft with Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter, then canceled the attempt to seize the Lustrous Orb and assigned Mars to search for information about the Lake Guardians.
• Cyrus said his exposed identity had to be dealt with as the aircraft flew away.

Cynthia told Gary that the Pokémon League was rewarding him and his friends for protecting the Lustrous Orb and exposing Cyrus. Gary received a gifted Charmander as his special reward, while the others were promised cash, and he later shared the news with them.

• Cynthia took Gary aside and explained that the League wanted to reward him and the others for stopping Team Galactic from stealing the Lustrous Orb.

After receiving their rewards for helping Cynthia, Gary strengthened his Viridian Power and set off with Rosa and Hilda for Hearthome City. They found Fantina back at Hearthome Gym, where she was finishing a battle with another challenger.

• Gary sent Umbreon to Oak Pokémon Research Lab, gave Choice Charcoal to Charmander, and used a Skill Enhancement Card to strengthen his Viridian Power.
• The next morning, Gary, Rosa, and Hilda said goodbye to Ash and the others and left Celestic Town for Hearthome City.
• After several days of travel, Gary and the girls reached Hearthome City and found Hearthome Gym open the next morning.
• A staff member led Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to the battle field, where Fantina was battling a challenger, so they took seats to wait.
• Fantina's battle with the challenger soon ended.

Gary, Rosa, and Hilda arrived at Hearthome Gym, where Gary began a three-Pokémon battle against Fantina. Gary’s Alolan Ninetales and Fantina’s Drifblim traded attacks, and Fantina realized Ninetales had vanished from its position.

• Fantina finished a Gym Battle and welcomed Gary, Rosa, and Hilda to Hearthome Gym.
• Gary volunteered to challenge Fantina first, while Rosa and Hilda watched from the stands with Cosmog.
• Fantina sent out her level 40 Drifblim, and Gary chose his Alolan Ninetales.
• Ninetales and Drifblim’s Ice Beam and Thunderbolt attacks clashed and canceled each other out.
• Fantina ordered Drifblim to use Shadow Ball, but the attack struck the ground after Ninetales disappeared, leaving Fantina to suspect what had happened.

Gary’s Alolan Ninetales defeated Fantina’s Drifblim and Mega Gengar, but burns left it unable to battle. With two of Gary’s Pokémon remaining against Fantina’s last Pokémon, the battle reached its final stage.

• Gary’s Alolan Ninetales used Agility to evade Drifblim’s attack, then defeated it with Moonblast.
• Fantina sent out her level 42 Gengar, which Alolan Ninetales outmaneuvered and blasted with Dazzling Gleam.
• Fantina Mega Evolved Gengar, and its Dark Pulse clashed evenly with Alolan Ninetales’s Ice Beam.
• Gengar burned Alolan Ninetales with Will-O-Wisp, but Gary had it use Blizzard to freeze Gengar and Moonblast to defeat it.
• Alolan Ninetales became unable to battle because of its burns, leaving two of Gary’s Pokémon against Fantina’s final Pokémon.

Gary defeated Fantina in the Hearthome Gym battle and received the Relic Badge. Rosa then prepared to battle Fantina next.

• Fantina sent out Mismagius as her final Pokémon, and Gary answered with Staraptor.
• Gary and Fantina traded attacks as Staraptor dodged Mismagius's moves and Mismagius avoided Staraptor's Air Cutters with Phantom Force.
• Mismagius struck Staraptor with Dazzling Gleam, but Staraptor recovered and attacked with Brave Bird and U-turn.
• Staraptor landed another Brave Bird, knocking Mismagius out and winning the match for Gary.
• Fantina gave Gary the Relic Badge, and Rosa began her battle with Fantina as Gary and Hilda watched.
