  • Jessie, James, and Meowth spotted the six Starter Pokémon and fantasized that capturing them would earn them promotions from Giovanni.
  • Team Rocket flew in aboard a giant Skiploom-shaped device and launched a net at the Starter Pokémon.

Ch. 118A Gift from Grandpa

After the Team Rocket Trio’s attack, Professor Oak gave Gary the gift he had promised: five Pokémon Mega Stones and two Key Stones. Gary planned to keep three Mega Stones for himself and give the remaining stones to Rosa and Hilda.

Ash challenged Gary to a three-on-three battle before they continued their journey through Hoenn. Gary’s Electabuzz gained the advantage over Ash’s Torkoal, leaving Torkoal falling toward a powerful Thunder attack.

  • Ash challenged Gary to a battle, and Gary accepted as Professor Oak agreed to referee.

Ch. 120A Challenge from Ash 2

Ash’s Torkoal was defeated by Gary’s Electabuzz, and Gary’s Pupitar then overwhelmed Pikachu, leaving Ash to concede the second match. Ash entrusted Pikachu to Brock and prepared for the final match.

  • Torkoal failed to dodge Electabuzz’s Thunder after becoming dizzy, and Professor Oak declared it unable to battle.
  • Ash sent out Pikachu, while Gary chose his level 43 Pupitar after noticing Pikachu was only level 42.
  • Pikachu’s Thunderbolt and Quick Attack failed to stop Pupitar, which blocked Iron Tail with Protect and struck Pikachu with Dragon Pulse.
  • Ash surrendered the second match because Pikachu was badly injured, and Brock stepped forward to care for it.
