Ch. 221A lingering threat
Key plot points and events
- Hinata faints from excitement but quickly wakes, reassuring the children and Xuanhui.
- Hizashi privately tells Xuanhui that five Hyuga elders have secretly taken in orphaned children and placed the Caged Bird Seal on them. The elders concealed this from both Konoha and Hiashi.
- Xuanhui urges Hizashi to report the elders, arguing that their actions violate the law and could endanger the Hyuga Clan. Hizashi gives him their names.
- Xuanhui goes to Minato to request a search warrant and have the elders expelled from the village. He also seeks approval for a classified undercover mission sending Itachi to the Akatsuki.
- Minato approves the requests, though he questions Xuanhui’s unusual plan. Xuanhui says the Akatsuki’s rules and benefits make it a workable place for Itachi to gain experience.
- Minato asks about Naruto. Xuanhui says Naruto is doing well but has little interest in becoming Hokage; he would rather have time for family.
- Xuanhui later asks Fugaku’s consent to send Itachi on the assignment. After hearing about the plan, Itachi volunteers, despite Fugaku’s concern for his safety.
Character developments and interactions
- Hizashi overcomes his hesitation and reports the elders to protect the children and the Hyuga Clan, while trying to shield Hiashi and Neji from the consequences.
- Xuanhui acts decisively against the elders and continues organizing covert operations. His matter-of-fact, darkly pragmatic remark that he plans to kill the elders and “put them to good use” alarms Minato, though Xuanhui says he knows not to expose children to such ideas.
- Minato trusts Xuanhui’s judgment despite finding his undercover plans strange. He is relieved that Naruto is safe and accepts Naruto’s different priorities.
- Naruto is portrayed as a happy, well-loved child who values family over pursuing the Hokage title.
- Itachi shows maturity and resolve by choosing the risky assignment himself; Fugaku is protective and reluctant to see his son placed in danger.
Significant themes

- Trust and responsibility: Hizashi must choose between silence and protecting the children; Xuanhui and Minato rely on one another’s judgment.
- Different definitions of ambition: Naruto’s preference for family over office contrasts with Itachi’s willingness to take on a dangerous mission.
- Dark humor and unconventional solutions: Xuanhui presents the Akatsuki as an employer with benefits and treats a potentially lethal political conflict with blunt practicality.
