Ch. 301Harassment tactics
Key plot points and events
- Obito visits Naruto on Turtle Island, admits he is the masked man known as Madara, and says he wants to negotiate. The gathered defenders—including Jiraiya, Orochimaru, Killer B, and the other jinchūriki—refuse to trust him.
- Obito uses Kamui to transport the miniature Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails sealed inside Orochimaru’s snake to Nagato in the Kamui Dimension. Nagato now has those two, along with the miniature Two-Tails, and plans to feed them to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
- Killer B’s attack passes through Obito, demonstrating his space-time ability. Obito then threatens to kill the Allied Shinobi Forces unless Naruto and B go to the battlefield.
- Naruto recognizes that the masked man is trying to draw them out and wear them down. Despite understanding the danger, Naruto agrees to go, confident that the jinchūriki will defeat Obito. Gaara, Fū, and the others join his resolve. Obito withdraws using Kamui.
- Jiraiya reports the encounter to headquarters. The leaders conclude that Obito cannot defeat the assembled jinchūriki directly and will likely try to separate them. They order Turtle Island to turn back.
- Meanwhile, White Zetsu forces launch brief, poorly coordinated attacks on several divisions. Shikaku directs reinforcements and advises the shinobi to rest in shifts, but the repeated nighttime harassment leaves the army exhausted. At dawn, two powerful chakra signatures approach the First Main Division.
Character developments and interactions
- Naruto shows perceptiveness by identifying Obito’s real strategy and resolve by agreeing to face him despite the threat to the army.
- Obito remains focused on manipulating events rather than fighting the group head-on; his threats reveal his willingness to exploit the army’s vulnerability.
- Jiraiya and Kushina try to protect Naruto and are anxious about his decision, while the other jinchūriki support him.
- Orochimaru tests Obito with a binding snake, but Obito’s Kamui defeats the restraint and exposes Orochimaru’s attempt to smuggle the miniature Tailed Beasts.
- Nagato quietly advances his plan while isolated in the Kamui Dimension.
- Shikaku responds pragmatically to the surprise attacks, organizing reinforcements and conserving the army’s strength.
Significant themes
- Deception and strategy: Obito uses threats and psychological pressure to influence Naruto and the Allied forces.
- Unity and resolve: The jinchūriki stand together, countering Obito’s attempt to intimidate Naruto.
- Attrition and psychological warfare: The White Zetsu attacks are limited, but their disruption of sleep steadily wears down the army.
- Uncertainty: The defenders know little about the enemy’s full abilities or intentions, forcing them to make decisions with incomplete information.
