Background

Zabuza is a rogue ninja from the Hidden Mist Village and one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. Gato hires him to assassinate Tazuna and prevent the completion of the bridge intended to free the Land of Waves from Gato's control. Kakashi identifies him as an opponent whom even jonin must confront cautiously. 4

He ambushes Team 7 in the fog surrounding the Land of Waves, targeting Kakashi after recognizing his Sharingan. His first battle ends when Chenshu Senju destroys his Water Prison, allowing Kakashi to counterattack; Zabuza is wounded and escapes with the Executioner's Blade through a Substitution Technique. 5

Zabuza returns at the bridge alongside Haku, still carrying an injury to his left shoulder. He attempts to reach Tazuna directly, but Chenshu's improved Wood Release neutralizes his blade, blocks his escape routes, and ultimately restrains him. 6 7

After Haku tries to sacrifice himself to protect him, Chenshu spares both of them on the condition that Zabuza cease pursuing Tazuna. Zabuza leaves the Land of Waves supported by Haku, promising to repay Chenshu's favor. 7

Several days after Zabuza and Haku depart, a Hidden Mist ANBU fleet approaches the Land of Waves through dense sea fog. Its arrival suggests that the circumstances surrounding Zabuza's defection extend beyond an isolated rogue-ninja incident. 7

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kabuto Yakushi reanimates Zabuza alongside six other past Seven Ninja Swordsmen and deploys them against the Allied Shinobi Forces. Zabuza charges Kakashi at the First Division's battle line, but Chenshu intercepts him, shatters the Executioner's Blade with a punch, destroys much of his reanimated body, and seals him with a specialized talisman after he begins regenerating. 112

Appearance

Zabuza is a bare-chested swordsman whose face is wrapped in bandages. He carries the oversized Executioner's Blade and often emerges from dense mist before attacking. 5 6

His confidence gives way to alarm once Chenshu's Wood Release prevents his usual mist-and-blade tactics from functioning. Despite referring to Haku as a tool, he is visibly affected when Chenshu points out that he had been distracted by concern for Haku. 6 7

While reanimated, Zabuza acts under Kabuto's control and attacks the Allied Forces without displaying the independence he showed during the Land of Waves incident. 112

Bridge Battle
