After the Draw

The news that Ling and Sasuke had fought to a draw spread through the Ninja Academy before the public matches had even ended.

Compared to simply asking "who won," a draw was the kind of result people kept bringing up.

Because it meant that Uchiha Ling, who had risen to first place through the stage assessments, had not been suppressed by Sasuke in a head-on clash. It also meant that Sasuke, long regarded as the sharpest genius of their class, had truly encountered a peer he could not overwhelm in a short time for the first time.

More than victory or defeat, it felt like a declaration.

After school, Ling was kept in the infirmary by Iruka to have the burn along his shoulder treated again.

When the ointment was applied, the coolness came with a faint sting, and his brow creased almost imperceptibly. Iruka noticed, but his tone was much gentler than usual. "The two of you held back that final move today. Otherwise, it wouldn't have ended with injuries this minor."

Ling did not deny it.

At the instant of the final collision, he could have been more ruthless. But if he had, Sasuke would have been more seriously hurt, and Ling himself might not have gotten away unscathed. That was not the kind of tradeoff he should make in a training session.

"Are you satisfied with a draw?" Iruka asked.

Ling was silent for a few breaths before answering, "For now."

That answer made Iruka glance at him.

It was neither complacency nor bravado.

He simply knew exactly where he stood right now.

"Remember this feeling." Iruka put away the medicine bottle. "Truly formidable people aren't the ones who have to smash their opponents to pieces every time. They're the ones who know when to save the fight for next time."

Ling nodded and tucked those words away in his heart.

By the time he walked out of the infirmary, the sky had already dimmed. Yet someone was waiting ahead of him around the corner.

Ino Yamanaka.

Leaning against the wall with a fresh roll of bandages in her arms, she straightened when Ling emerged. Her gaze landed on his shoulder first, and her brows immediately drew together. "And you said you were fine."

Ling glanced at what she held. "Why are you here?"

"To bring you these." Ino shoved the bandages into his arms, quick and decisive enough to leave him no chance to refuse. "And don't get the wrong idea. I just thought you fought pretty well today, so I'm rewarding you while I'm at it."

She said it was "while she was at it," but the tips of her ears had turned a little red.

Ling accepted the bandages and paused for a moment. "Thanks."

Ino stared at him for two seconds, then suddenly leaned a little closer, an obvious smile in her eyes. "You fought Sasuke like that today, and you're still so calm. Do you just never blush?"

Before her words had even faded, her fingertips lightly brushed the uninjured side of his shoulder, as though testing the waters—or deliberately moving closer.

The next moment, she casually smoothed down the collar that had loosened slightly while he was being treated. Her movements were far too natural, as if she should have been doing this all along.

Ling paused slightly.

Ino caught that instant at once, and her smile deepened. "So it's not that you can't blush. It just depends on the person."

Ling looked at her. He neither stepped back nor responded to her teasing, only saying calmly, "You've been getting bolder lately."

"Do you hate it?"

The question came too directly.

Even Ino's heart skipped a beat after saying it, but she kept staring at him as if she had to have an answer.

Ling looked at her for a long while before finally giving her just two words.

"I don't."

Ino froze for a moment, then the corners of her lips slowly lifted. It was not the smug satisfaction she usually wore after successfully teasing someone, but a softer, gentler, more genuine kind of happiness.

The light in her eyes brightened noticeably, as though she had finally gotten the answer she had always wanted to confirm from him.

"Fine." She forcefully suppressed her racing heart and lifted her chin. "Then I'll keep doing it."

With that, she turned and left, though her steps were much faster than usual, as if she feared that if she lingered any longer, she would give herself away.

At the far end of the corridor, Hinata happened to emerge with her practice notebook in her arms. Seeing the scene, she came to a soft stop. She had not heard the entire conversation, but she could see how close Ino had been standing, and she could see that Ling had not avoided her.

For an instant, it felt as though something gently pressed down on her chest.

But she quickly pushed that trace of bitterness back down.

Because compared to that subtle feeling, there was something else she cared about more.

Ling's shoulder was injured today.

Early the next morning, she quietly placed the medicinal patches prepared by her family into Ling's desk drawer, leaving nothing behind. Yet the moment Ling sat down, he saw the neatly placed little paper packet, his fingers lingering on the edge of the drawer for a moment.

A small note was tucked beneath the packet, with only a few brief words written on it.

"Remember to change the medicine."

He knew who had left it.

And because he knew, the emotions in his heart became all the more complicated.

Ling folded the small note again instead of throwing it away, then casually placed it at the very back of his desk drawer, even pressing its corners flat. His movements were calm, yet more than any explanation, they seemed like an acceptance.

The afternoon training continued as usual, and the final rankings from the public matches were released one after another. Ino earned a good ranking with her steady performance. Although Kiba kept complaining that he was unconvinced, his performance had not been bad either. As for the two names at the top, everyone had already accepted one thing.

Ling and Sasuke were the true twin pillars of their class.

Before school ended, Sasuke passed by Ling's desk and paused for an instant.

"Next time, I won't settle for a draw."

Ling raised his eyes to look at him. "Neither will I."

This exchange was shorter than any they had had before.

Yet compared to their previous contests, which had carried obvious hostility, this one held an added layer of true, equal recognition.

That night, Ling sat in the courtyard. The injury on his shoulder no longer hurt as much as it had during the day. He spread open his palm, and a wisp of chakra slowly gathered between his fingers before being compressed bit by bit under his will.

It was steadier.

And heavier.

Today's battle had not allowed him to defeat Sasuke outright, but it had shown him more clearly the height he had now reached.

First in the Ninja Academy.

A draw with Sasuke in the public match.

It meant that he was no longer merely "an oddity rising too quickly."

He had truly stepped into the forefront of his generation.

The wind passed through the leaves in the courtyard, producing soft rustling sounds.

Ling slowly closed his fist, drawing that condensed chakra back into his body. Yet his gaze was calmer than ever before.

Because he knew that the competition of these first forty chapters had only been a warm-up.

A far greater stage would arrive soon.

And he was ready for the next step.

No exceptions.
