"Captain is waiting for you upstairs, sir."
Claude turned around, no longer looking at the flying beasts in the sky. He nodded to the knight and entered the tower.
The tower's spiral staircase had been built from blocks of stone embedded into the walls. Many loopholes had been left in the surrounding walls, letting the dim light from outside shine into the tower. Claude's boots rang loudly against the steps, the sound carrying all the way upward along the staircase.
"Here? Sit down."
The moment he stepped onto the top of the tower, a voice reached him. A tall, weathered knight sat before a stone table and beckoned him over. This was hardly a comfortable place. The frigid wind at such a height blew continuously through the drafty tower, and even the stone table and chairs were covered in frost.
Claude naturally sat down on a stone chair, as though two old friends who had not met in years were reuniting. He placed a stainless steel lunchbox in the middle of the table, then opened it. Steaming heat rose out.
"As a general, do you still ring the bell yourself? I brought you something to eat. Give it a try."
"Hm? Let's see what good stuff you made this time. Pie today? Apple pie, even? You can make this? Seems like the people with halos on their heads love this sort of thing most."
"They'd be furious if they saw mine. I put plenty of meat in it, after all. But they can't control us here, so we can eat however we want. Apples are rare around here. This was all I could get my hands on."
