Background / History

Outer Gods are not native gods of the Primordial Continent. They are beings born in the boundless Chaos beyond the world; the human term “Outer God” is only a collective label, while they use names incomprehensible to human language among themselves 218 270.

Though nearly immortal and extraordinarily powerful, Outer Gods are also endangered by Chaos. Some descend out of boredom or curiosity toward lesser life, while others seek long-enduring worlds as safe harbors from Chaos’ hazards. They repeatedly send compressed projections or fragments of consciousness rather than entering in full, as their true bodies could rupture a world outright 270.

The ancient Turtle Treasure Civilization once borrowed power from a particularly restrained Outer God without losing its sanity. Its population-wide access to that power made it strong enough to rival gods, shamans, and demons, until those three forces united to destroy the civilization as a defier of Heaven and Earth 283 284.

Great Qian’s first—and, as recorded, only—true Outer God descent was Taiyi Xuanpin. Its manifestation devastated Bing Province so severely that the Emperor personally intervened to slay it; the province had still not fully recovered more than two centuries later 232.

Nature

Existence Beyond the World

Outer Gods are incomprehensible to mortal beings. Even Creation Realm cultivators are described as insignificant before them, while direct observation or contact can overwhelm reason and destroy the Dao heart 218 265 287.

• They may perish within Chaos, yet can reappear after immeasurably long ages. 270

Outer Gods normally act through projections, servants, envoys, infiltrators, or borrowed power rather than descending in their full prime 219 246.

Documented Outer Gods can impose alien laws upon the world through their projections.

Appearance

Outer Gods have no single known form. Their appearances and very presence exceed ordinary human comprehension, often producing terror, loss of reason, or physical mutation in those who behold them 218 235 287.

The Formless Suspended Skull, seen through an avatar on Unsalted Mountain, possessed a transparent azure body, layers of translucent gelatinous flesh, an abyssal vortex in place of a heart, numerous reverse-jointed arms, and umbilical cords extending into the heavens 214 215.

• A calyx-like opening where a head should be, filled with pale tentacles that formed a halo. 214
