Background / History
Outer Gods are not native gods of the Primordial Continent. They are beings born in the boundless Chaos beyond the world; the human term “Outer God” is only a collective label, while they use names incomprehensible to human language among themselves 218 270.
Though nearly immortal and extraordinarily powerful, Outer Gods are also endangered by Chaos. Some descend out of boredom or curiosity toward lesser life, while others seek long-enduring worlds as safe harbors from Chaos’ hazards. They repeatedly send compressed projections or fragments of consciousness rather than entering in full, as their true bodies could rupture a world outright 270.
The ancient Turtle Treasure Civilization once borrowed power from a particularly restrained Outer God without losing its sanity. Its population-wide access to that power made it strong enough to rival gods, shamans, and demons, until those three forces united to destroy the civilization as a defier of Heaven and Earth 283 284.
Great Qian’s first—and, as recorded, only—true Outer God descent was Taiyi Xuanpin. Its manifestation devastated Bing Province so severely that the Emperor personally intervened to slay it; the province had still not fully recovered more than two centuries later 232.
During the Hundred Schools Gathering, Li Shun witnessed numerous Outer Gods tear open the sky of the Primordial Illusion Realm. Immense ancient beings repelled their shadows, repaired the breaches, and fought beyond the world’s barrier for three days. The invasion left a perceptible trace in Great Qian after the illusion collapsed, prompting the suspension of the gathering and the guarded examination of its survivors. The Grand Arbiter concealed Great Qian’s heavenly traces before the invaders could necessarily discover its true location 229 230.
Great Qian later made use of the fallen Outer God Mingxing Wangyu to support divine-soul travel through Chaos. Ancient Web determined that the Great Qian Heavenly Dao was effectively acting as Mingxing Wangyu, reproducing its innate travel ability through its network rather than merely allowing cultivators to draw directly upon an Outer God’s corpse 350.
The Disorderly Reincarnation World was created as a playground by another deceased Outer God. Its creator’s surviving power continued to impose endless reincarnation and periodically changing laws upon the world despite the loss of its consciousness. After Li Shun reached level ninety there, he entered a city containing an immense statue identified as Father God, the Outer God who created the world 363 364 373.
Nature
Existence Beyond the World
Outer Gods are incomprehensible to mortal beings. Even Creation Realm cultivators are described as insignificant before them, while direct observation or contact can overwhelm reason and destroy the Dao heart 218 265 287.
- They may perish within Chaos, yet can reappear after immeasurably long ages. 270
- Their number cannot be estimated; even Ancient Web Across Time knows only a fraction of Chaos. 269
- Outer Gods conflict with and destroy one another within Chaos rather than existing peacefully. 245
- A mortal’s definite awareness of an Outer God can allow its conceptual might to manifest across the boundary between reality and illusion. 227
- Their search for refuges is not restricted to one world. Ancient Web states that invasions of Great Qian could cease if the invaders found sufficiently numerous suitable havens elsewhere. 270
- Outer Gods deliberately avoid some disorderly worlds because their overall aura resembles Chaos, not because those worlds necessarily pose a genuine threat to them. 353
Descent and Projection
Outer Gods normally act through projections, servants, envoys, infiltrators, or borrowed power rather than descending in their full prime 219 246.
- Their projections are constrained by the Heaven-and-Earth Membrane and the laws of the world they enter. 246
- Even a servant carrying only a small portion of an Outer God’s power can resist a coordinated group of cultivators. 219
- A true-form descent poses a world-ending threat; an unconstrained Outer God could reduce a world to ashes almost immediately. 246
- Their influence can persist over millions of years, returning after repeated repulses. 270
- An Outer God passing through Chaos can leave disturbances perceptible within a nearby world. The Imperial Academy’s position near a weakened Heaven-and-Earth Membrane allows such traces to be sensed especially clearly. 269
Ancient Web later cautioned that the Taiyi Xuanpin and Hunkun Chixiang manifestations Li Shun initially confronted in Bing Province were a residual imprint and a lurking will, neither yet at the level of a projection at that stage. Both sources were renowned within Chaos and no weaker than Ancient Web Across Time; their restricted manifestations and the court’s sealing arts were essential to Li Shun surviving the encounter. Hunkun Chixiang’s projection subsequently descended as the confrontation escalated 252 266.
Erosion and Corruption
Contact with an Outer God erodes reason, corrupts the divine soul, and can transform mortals into its servants 218 254.
- Mindless puppets — victims lose reason and become unconscious vessels of Outer God power. 244
- Emissaries — victims willingly surrender body and soul, then spread calamity on the Outer God’s behalf. 218 244
- Infiltrators — the most concealed form of corruption; an Outer God’s will lies dormant in the victim’s body and subconscious until a predetermined opportunity triggers it. 244
- Corrupted emissaries can undergo extreme mutation, developing distorted flesh, tumors, tentacles, malformed eyes, and inhuman anatomy. 235
- Outer God corruption of the divine soul is generally considered irreversible. 254
- Imitating an Outer God’s abilities can expose even a world’s Heavenly Dao to corrosion. Ancient Web considered both Li Shun and the Martial World unable to withstand this danger when discussing the reproduction of Mingxing Wangyu’s travel network. 350
Ancient Web explains corruption partly as the consequence of an overwhelming difference in strength: even an Outer God acting from curiosity can display power that lesser beings cannot endure. Its later account identifies Outer Gods as immensely powerful manifestations of Dao, making exposure to their nature itself dangerous rather than requiring deliberate hostility 270 351.
World Manipulation
Documented Outer Gods can impose alien laws upon the world through their projections.
- World weaving — Hunkun Chixiang unfolded endless abysses and corridors within a two-dimensional seal, causing Great Qian to merge with its woven world. 252
- Indiscriminate devouring — Hunkun Chixiang attempted to consume Li Shun, Zhao Cheng, Bing Province, and the surrounding laws of Heaven and Earth. 251
- Conceptual erosion — the Formless Suspended Skull’s presence could invade the Square Inch despite appearing within the Primordial Illusion Realm. 216 227
- Bestowal of power — some Outer Gods can grant believers strength without conventional cultivation; the Turtle Treasure Civilization’s patron was an exceptional example. 283
- Travel through Chaos — Mingxing Wangyu possessed an innate ability enabling divine souls to travel through Chaos. The Great Qian Heavenly Dao reproduces this function through its network. 350
- World creation and enduring rules — the Disorderly Reincarnation World’s creator established a world whose Heavenly Dao remains bound by its rules after its death. Its population is fixed, its inhabitants repeatedly reincarnate and slaughter one another, and its Heavenly Dao changes character every sixty years. 363
- Era-wide conditions — the Disorderly Reincarnation World’s hunger era reduces food supplies while intensifying the appetites of both living beings and the Heavenly Dao itself. The Heavenly Dao can manifest as a devouring shadow, but cannot independently escape the creator’s restrictions. 363
Innate and Constant Power
According to Ancient Web, an Outer God’s strength comes from Chaos and is fixed from birth. Outer Gods do not cultivate and cannot become stronger or weaker by any means; their fundamental states are survival and extinction. Suppressing a manifestation or limiting the power sent into a world does not constitute cultivation or a change in the source’s innate strength 270 312.
This distinguishes them from acquired living beings who advance through cultivation. Ancient Web considers the Grand Arbiter’s Spirit Wandering Realm merely a variation of the Heaven and Earth Realm, still far below the realm of Outer Gods. Destroying emissaries therefore does not establish that a cultivator can contend with an unrestricted Outer God 312.
Li Shun and Ancient Web nevertheless concluded that Emperor Gan’s strength likely rivals that of a Chaos deity after his manifestation in the Imperial Academy trial. How a human could acquire such power remained unexplained. Ancient Web warned that proof of an acquired being reaching comparable strength through cultivation could attract the attention of countless Outer Gods throughout Chaos 309 312.
Dao, Imitation, and Residual Imprints
Ancient Web describes Outer Gods as immensely powerful manifestations of different Daos. Its observation that “gods have perished, and the Dao is gradually turning empty” leads Li Shun to reconsider whether their apparent invincibility arises from their nature as embodiments of Dao 351.
Imitating an Outer God can allow another being to approach and comprehend its corresponding Dao without becoming the original entity. Ancient Web proposes acting as Mingxing Wangyu to strengthen itself, while explicitly acknowledging that it can never become the true Mingxing Wangyu. This does not contradict the constancy of true Outer Gods: Ancient Web is a lingering imprint that abandoned its identification with Ancient Web Across Time and became a Square Inch Puppet, not the full source itself 351.
The Great Qian Heavenly Dao provides an existing example of such imitation. It acts as Mingxing Wangyu to enable soul travel, while the Mind-Communicating Bead serves principally as a credential and protective barrier against the user’s divine sense being assimilated by the Heavenly Dao. Ancient Web found no current signs of instability in Great Qian, although it acknowledged the theoretical risk of Outer God corrosion 350.
Death and Reappearance
Outer Gods are born from Chaos and normally return to Chaos after death, so their corpses should not ordinarily exist. Nevertheless, Mingxing Wangyu’s fallen remains and the continued operation of deceased Outer Gods’ powers demonstrate that death need not erase every trace of their existence 318 350 364.
Ancient Web distinguishes the destruction of consciousness from the disappearance of residual power:
- Loss of consciousness — an Outer God can be considered fallen when its consciousness is entirely gone, even though power shaped from Chaos remains. 364
- Enduring power — as long as Chaos continues and nothing interferes, that residual power can exist indefinitely without its former owner’s consciousness. 364
- Recovery of memories — if the Outer God eventually returns from Chaos, its remaining power may preserve memories of its former existence. 364
- Loss of all traces — if the remaining power disappears and no one remembers the Outer God, a later return leaves it unable to recover evidence of its prior existence, making the return effectively a new birth. 364
The Disorderly Reincarnation World is sustained by such residual power. Ancient Web identifies that power as unclaimed because its creator is dead, making it a possible starting point for Li Shun’s proposed Outer God Puppet Dao rather than requiring him to confront a living Outer God directly 363 364.
Power Progression
Outer Gods do not possess an ordinary cultivation progression. Their innate strength is constant; the distinctions below concern manifestation, persistence after death, and the use of their power by other beings 312 351 364.
| State / Development | Power and Limitations | Recorded Example |
|---|---|---|
| Innate existence in Chaos | Possesses its distinct power from birth; cannot cultivate or become stronger or weaker. Chaos remains a source of existential danger. 270 312 | Ancient Web Across Time and the Formless Suspended Skull are classified as living Outer Gods. 227 |
| Compressed influence or separated consciousness | Sends a restricted portion of power into a world to avoid destroying it; the lesser manifestation does not alter the source’s fixed strength. 270 312 | Hunkun Chixiang’s lurking will used Sun Lang as an infiltrator. 244 266 |
| Descended projection or avatar | Exerts overwhelming power locally, but is constrained by the world’s membrane and laws. 215 246 | The Formless Suspended Skull’s avatar enslaved Li Shun’s illusory self; Hunkun Chixiang’s projection merged Great Qian with its woven world. 215 252 |
| True-form descent | Threatens the integrity of a world through the scale of its power. 246 270 | Taiyi Xuanpin devastated Bing Province before being slain by the Emperor. 232 |
| Fallen consciousness with enduring power | Consciousness is extinguished, while residual power can persist indefinitely and maintain established rules. 364 | The deceased creator of the Disorderly Reincarnation World continues to govern it through surviving power. 363 364 |
| Imitation by another being or Heavenly Dao | Approaches the fallen Outer God’s Dao and reproduces functions without becoming that Outer God; carries a risk of corrosion. This is not advancement by the original Outer God. 350 351 | Great Qian’s Heavenly Dao acts as Mingxing Wangyu; Ancient Web proposes attempting the same role. 350 351 |
| Reappearance from Chaos | May return after immeasurable ages. Surviving power can restore former memories; without such traces, the return is effectively a new birth. 270 364 | Explained by Ancient Web as part of the Outer Gods’ cycle of existence. 364 |
Appearance
Outer Gods have no single known form. Their appearances and very presence exceed ordinary human comprehension, often producing terror, loss of reason, or physical mutation in those who behold them 218 235 287.
The Formless Suspended Skull, seen through an avatar on Unsalted Mountain, possessed a transparent azure body, layers of translucent gelatinous flesh, an abyssal vortex in place of a heart, numerous reverse-jointed arms, and umbilical cords extending into the heavens 214 215.
- A calyx-like opening where a head should be, filled with pale tentacles that formed a halo. 214
- Black fissures within that halo, resembling indifferent eyes. 214
- A chest cavity containing a rotating nebula-like abyss rather than a heart. 214
- Multiple thick, translucent cords connecting its back to the sky. 214
- Its mere avatar compelled Li Shun toward submission and overwrote his sense of self. 215
The statue of Father God in the Disorderly Reincarnation World towers above the center of a city that appears ruined from outside but whole upon entry. Even after reaching level ninety, Li Shun could not discern the statue’s features 373.
Recorded Manifestations
| Outer God / Influence | Manifestation | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Formless Suspended Skull | An avatar appeared atop Unsalted Mountain in the Primordial Illusion Realm, marked Li Shun as a servant, and later pressed into the Square Inch through divine intent. 215 216 | Its advance halted when Li Shun unsealed the Deep Profound Gate; its true existence remains beyond Great Qian. 216 227 |
| Taiyi Xuanpin | The first Outer God recorded to descend in true form upon Great Qian, devastating Bing Province. 232 | Slain by the Emperor; its lingering might remained in Bing Province centuries later. A residual phantom also opposed Hunkun Chixiang’s devouring during the later sealing operation. 232 249 251 |
| Hunkun Chixiang | Used the infiltrator Sun Lang as a route into Great Qian, revealing a bronze mask covered in eyes and a nebula-like mouth. 251 | Its projection was sealed within a newly written isolated world and removed by the Grand Arbiter’s starlight. 252 |
| Ancient Web Across Time | The source of Ancient Web, classified alongside the Formless Suspended Skull as an Outer God still alive and active. 227 | Its fragment, Ancient Web, became Li Shun’s Square Inch Puppet. The fragment later explained that it had abandoned its former identification with its source and intended to strengthen itself by imitating other Outer Gods. 228 351 |
| Turtle Treasure Civilization’s patron | Granted its worshippers strength while preserving their sanity and autonomy. 283 | Its civilization was destroyed by a coalition of gods, demons, and shamans. Li Shun later perceived an Outer God connected to a Turtle Treasure while activating “Beyond Calculation,” remaining lucid under the treasure’s safeguards. 283 284 293 |
| Unidentified invading Outer Gods | Tore breaches in the sky of the Primordial Illusion Realm during the Hundred Schools Gathering. 229 | Ancient defenders repelled their shadows and sealed the sky; the Grand Arbiter concealed Great Qian’s heavenly traces after the invasion drew their attention. 229 230 |
| Unidentified passing Outer God | Its passage through Chaos left a trace perceived above the Imperial Academy Estate. 269 | The academy’s restrictions suppressed sounds during the disturbance, and normal activity resumed after the trace departed. 269 |
| Mingxing Wangyu | A fallen Outer God whose innate power enabled divine-soul travel through Chaos; its network is used by the Great Qian Heavenly Dao. 350 | Great Qian’s Heavenly Dao acts as Mingxing Wangyu to support Mind-Communicating Bead travel. Ancient Web seeks to investigate and imitate this arrangement. 350 351 |
| Father God / Disorderly Reincarnation World’s creator | Created the world as a playground, imposing endless reincarnation and an unstable Heavenly Dao whose eras change every sixty years. Its towering statue is identified as Father God. 363 373 | Its consciousness is dead, but surviving power sustains the world. Ancient Web proposes that Li Shun take control of this unclaimed power as a first step toward an Outer God puppet. 363 364 |
Suspected and Comparative Cases
Fang Han was classified by the Heaven Oversight Bureau as an Outer God emissary because his repeated resurrections, untraceable movements, and incomprehensible abilities exceeded its understanding. Ying Wuxiu argued that the Bureau’s operational definition—an indescribable existence beyond the world—could encompass the power behind him. This was an institutional judgment rather than confirmation that Fang Han was a true Outer God; he is Li Shun’s puppet 277 287.
The Bureau also investigated Li Shun because of his earlier association with Fang Han, despite his assistance in sealing Outer God phantoms and prior clearance. The Imperial Academy’s later trial ultimately convinced its instructors that his promotion of the Hundred Schools and creation of a flourishing society showed he was not an Outer God agent 287 311.
Emperor Gan is compared to an Outer God, but is not established as one. His manifestation in the trial retained overwhelming power despite the realm’s apparent illusory restrictions, compelled submission, and erased Yan Kingdom. Li Shun and Ancient Web judged that his strength likely rivals a Chaos deity, while remaining unable to explain how a human acquired it 309 312.
The Houtu deity encountered during Li Shun’s investigation of another world was ultimately judged likely to be a weakened native god, not an Outer God. Its reliance on lingering faith and indirect resurrection schemes distinguished it from the overwhelming direct presence of Outer Gods 346.
Exploration of an Outer God-Linked Realm
Li Shun considered a gate originating from a fallen Outer God a possible route beyond the Primordial Ancient Domain. He prepared to explore it through Fang Han, believing his nearly three hundred strands of Heaven-and-Earth Mystic Yellow Qi could protect Square Inch against contamination and seal the gate if necessary 334.
Beyond the Deep Profound Gate, Fang Han encountered a realm governed by unfamiliar forces and an impersonal mechanical system. It assigned him a numbered identity and the occupation of Level 1 Appraiser, while rendering his Liqi and Witch Clan inheritance unusable. Hundreds of millions of transparent cubes held workers performing appraisal tasks. This established the unusual nature of the destination without revealing the identity of the Outer God associated with it 338.
Defenses Against Outer Gods
- Celestial Array — A formation encompassing Great Qian’s 108 prefectures conceals the realm’s location from Outer Gods in Chaos, though it cannot completely prevent envoys from descending through existing mediums. 230
- Hundred Schools doctrine — The philosophies and accumulated thought of humanity act as mental anchors against Outer God erosion; a more internally consistent doctrine provides stronger resistance. 230 265
- Heaven-and-Earth Membrane — Limits the power of projections entering the world, creating the possibility for local cultivators to resist or suppress them. It also obstructs Outer God perception: Ancient Web cannot locate surviving fragments of the original membrane for Li Shun. 246 295
- Heavenly countermeasures — Black Annihilation Mystic Thunder is a pure-destruction response evolved by Heaven and Earth against Outer God invasions. 277
- Grand Arbiter’s starlight — The Grand Arbiter destroyed five Outer God emissaries and their connected probing influences, demonstrating that Outer Gods are not invincible. 235
- Truth-Cutting Six Directions Art and the Yin-Yang Brush — Hunkun Chixiang was first confined to a two-dimensional seal, then enclosed within a newly written isolated world. 251 252
- Residual power of hostile Outer Gods — Taiyi Xuanpin’s lingering might in Bing Province was deliberately used to suppress and weaken the will behind Sun Lang because Outer Gods are mutually hostile within Chaos. 245
- Turtle Treasure and “Beyond Calculation” — The treasure permits a protected connection to an Outer God. During Li Shun’s activation, the turtle shell and safeguards associated with the Myriad Treasures Furnace preserved his sanity. Its concealment nevertheless proved insufficient to keep him beyond Emperor Gan’s attention. 293 312
- Borrowing Longevity from Heaven — The practice benefits the Heavenly Dao as well as the borrower: longer-lived humans become stronger anchors helping it resist Outer God corrosion. 351
- Isolation and examination — The Heaven Oversight Bureau isolates people exposed to Outer Gods and tests their mental state. Its book phantom reproduced the pressure and appearance of Taiyi Xuanpin and Hunkun Chixiang while confining their corruptive influence. 252 253
- Buffered imitation experiments — Ancient Web proposes using a separate world as a buffer when reproducing Mingxing Wangyu’s power. If its Heavenly Dao begins to corrode, Li Shun could abandon the world and withdraw with Square Inch’s assistance. This remains a proposed precaution, not proof that imitation is safe. 350
Square Inch and the Outer God Puppet Dao
Square Inch provides Li Shun with a protected domain and a means of withdrawing from dangerous worlds, but it is not an unconditional defense against living Outer Gods. Ancient Web warns that Square Inch is closely connected to Li Shun’s soul, mind, and intellect; direct contact could therefore cause irreparable damage despite its protection. It advised avoiding Outer Gods as much as possible before the Creation Realm 266.
After learning that Outer Gods embody Dao, Li Shun proposed using their bodies and powers as stepping stones toward godhood, potentially turning them into puppets. Ancient Web cautioned that making a living Outer God into a puppet was far beyond his present strength and that even a successful capture might allow it to occupy a position within Square Inch and threaten his control, much as the Sage statues had done 351 363.
The deceased creator of the Disorderly Reincarnation World offers a less direct starting point. Its consciousness is gone and its world-sustaining power is unclaimed; Ancient Web suggests that controlling the world could allow Li Shun to claim that power and potentially bring it into Square Inch. This is an opportunity under investigation, not a completed Outer God subjugation 363 364.
Trivia
- Great Qian suppresses public knowledge of Outer Gods because widespread awareness itself may increase the chance of attracting their attention. 232
- The Severing Heaven and Earth event is believed to have been a desperate attempt to cut off Outer God erosion from the Primordial Continent. 218
- The Heaven Oversight Bureau defines an Outer God less by a fixed appearance than by being an existence beyond mortal understanding. 287
- The Hundred Schools Gathering is held partly to prepare humanity for potential Outer God invasions. 218
- The writing on Turtle Treasures was the ancient civilization’s means of communicating with its Outer God. 283
- Ancient Web initially suspected that the Mind-Communicating Bead was forged using an Outer God’s corpse; its later investigation identified the role of Mingxing Wangyu’s network and the Great Qian Heavenly Dao’s imitation of that fallen god. 317 350
- Ancient Web’s proposal to grow stronger by acting as another Outer God applies to its status as a residual imprint and Square Inch Puppet, not to the fixed strength of its living source. 312 351
- Father God’s identification occurs after Li Shun reaches level ninety in the Disorderly Reincarnation World; that level is a measure of Li Shun’s local advancement, not a cultivation rank assigned to the Outer God itself. 373
