A settlement once run by devils had been captured by Charles's demon legion.
Yet the demon army had recently withdrawn in haste, blasting the entire settlement into ruins.
And now, a vanguard force of over a hundred thousand devils had marched to this location.
Leading this army was a high-ranking Pit Fiend who could break through to become a Greater Devil at any moment.
But he could not advance. His military merits were still insufficient—far from enough to bribe a Greater Demon for the chance at promotion.
Looking at the settlement reduced to rubble, the Pit Fiend could not help but rage. "Those stupid demons are going to die anyway!"
"Why resist? Why run?!"
"Are they really demons? Such stupid, cowardly demons!"
His adjutant was equally furious. Looking at the ruins, he knew this meant they had lost out on countless gains.
Otherwise, taking this settlement would have meant earning vast military merits and the favor of Purgatory's will.
Now, they could only serve as laborers and painstakingly repair the settlement.
Fortunately, besides their army of more than a hundred thousand devils, they had also captured an equal number of Lemures along the way.
Lemures were truly useful. Even if they worked themselves to death, these mindless lower devils would not utter a single complaint.
The bone devil overseers cracked their whips across the Lemures' bodies. "Move faster!"
"Quit dawdling!"
The devil legion was hard at work.
Then suddenly, a humming sound came from the sky.
At first, the sound was not especially noticeable, but as time passed, the hum seemed to reach straight into their souls.
A devil raised his head and witnessed a shocking sight in the sky.
A colossal black gate, wreathed in flames and lightning, had formed.
"What is that?"
A devil asked.
