Charles murmured, "Trial Plane?"

"What's it for?"

Jody said, "It's a place where people get killed!"

"The Trial Plane isn't in the Wizard World. I've heard it's a secondary plane."

"All first-class apprentices who want to become a first-ring wizard and obtain a Mind-Focusing Potion have to enter the Trial Plane and fight."

"There are first-class apprentices from other wizard academies in the Trial Plane, not just ours from Isata."

Charles was a little confused. "What do you have to do in the Trial Plane? Why do you say it's a place where people get killed? What's the trial about?"

Charles was very confused.

Jody shook her head. "I don't know exactly what you have to do in the Trial Plane. My family hasn't told me either."

"But there's one thing I do know. Once you enter the Trial Plane, not everyone will get a Mind-Focusing Potion."

"Nor will everyone make it out alive. The vast majority of first-class apprentices die in there."

"I've heard that, of all the first-class apprentices who enter the Trial Plane, only one in ten—or even fewer—make it out alive."

Charles was stunned. "One in ten, or even fewer? That's an insanely high death rate!"

"With a death rate that high, people still go?"

Jody laughed. "When there's a chance to advance and become a wizard, what's strange about risking your life for it?"

"What's really strange is you asking that question."

"If there's no other way to get a Mind-Focusing Potion, and you have the talent to become a wizard, but you can't get one and end up spending your whole life as a first-class wizard apprentice, would you be willing to accept that?"

"Would you rather risk it in the Trial Plane, or spend your whole life as a first-class wizard apprentice?"
