In the novel Ming Jiu read after her death, Chu Lanning was engaged to Zuo Junhao through a business alliance. She initially had little interest in him, but eventually fell for his convincing performance as a devoted fiancé. Their relationship deteriorated after the natural disasters began, when Chu Lanning treated herself as the mistress of the Zuo household and repeatedly clashed with Zuo Junxin.
