Background
The Outer Court was established after Shrek Academy’s founding, at the request of the three great empires, to train more people. The Inner Court remained the academy’s more selective division 144.
Admission and Studies
- Entry requirements: Applicants must be under twelve years old and have Soul Power above rank fifteen. Admitted students can choose the Martial Soul Department or Spirit Guidance Department 4.
- Classes: The first year has four classes. Class One groups Power Attack and Control Type battle spirit masters; Class Two groups Defense and Agility Attack Types; Class Three groups Support Types 45.
- Training: Students take theory and practical-combat classes. Later coursework covers soul beasts, Evil Soul Masters, teamwork, soul-skill combinations, Soul Power control, and foundational soul guidance. Practical work includes duels, group battles, and encounters with captive soul beasts 17 82 102.
- Competition: Students can fight in the Soul Fighting District. From the fourth year onward, victories against students of the same year are required for advancement; the requirement increases in later years 105.
Assessments and Advancement
| Milestone | Requirement or outcome |
|---|---|
| Freshman assessment | Held three months after classes begin. Students compete in three-person teams; failing students are expelled 15. |
| First-to-second-year advancement | Requires at least level twenty Soul Power and two Spirit Rings, as well as passing the assessment 72. |
| Third-to-fourth-year advancement | Three-ring cultivation is a significant threshold 31. |
| Sixth-year graduation | Students who pass the graduation assessment qualify for consideration for the Inner Court entrance assessment; only a small number of the best are offered that further test 4 144. |
The standards eliminate many students before graduation. When Yue Ling reached third year, his four classes had thirty-eight, thirty, thirty-three, and thirty-one students remaining respectively. The account estimates that fewer than fifty students would complete the full Outer Court program and earn graduation qualifications 82.
Core Disciples and Resources
- Core disciple status: The academy awards it to outstanding students, including performers in the freshman assessment. Temporary core disciples can receive its treatment until the end of an academic year and be reconsidered after the next advancement examination 44 45.
- Meals: Outer Court core disciples receive free, nutritious cafeteria meals made from Soul Beast meat; ordinary students pay for less nutritious meals 103.
- Treasure fairs: Merchants hold a Treasure Appreciation Fair for Outer Court core disciples, giving them access to rare goods before public sale. A separate, higher-tier fair serves Inner Court disciples 102.
- Merchant credit: Core disciples can obtain low-interest credit against their expected future prospects. Gongyang Mo says the academy requires them to reach rank forty before turning eighteen to graduate 103.
Path to the Inner Court
The normal route is to complete the six-year Outer Court program, pass its graduation assessment, and then pass the Inner Court selection. A Sea God Pavilion elder can approve an exceptional early assessment 4 144. Yue Ling receives such permission as a fourth-year student at rank fifty-eight, but the council does not lower the assessment’s difficulty for him 143 144.
Outer Court core disciples also compete for places on Shrek’s seven-member tournament Reserve Team. Selection brings training and possible substitute duties, but does not guarantee a future place on the official team: members face continued evaluations and must enter the Inner Court to remain candidates 119 126 127.
