Ch. 281True Yang Qilin Stone Spirit Root
Summary
After the survivors return to the Eight Directions Food Tower, the atmosphere is subdued because of the deaths in the cave estate. Zhang Chenlin has already left, while the remaining cultivators are deeply curious about Shen Yi. Although he appears to be only an Initial Hunyuan cultivator, the grandmasters who survived alongside him treat him as a senior, believing he may have protected them from the three demon kings.
Shen Yi sits quietly with Chen Zhong and A Qing, but his presence turns the corner into an unofficial seat of honor. A treasure collector named Ma Guangshan approaches him, offering his services and presenting a purple stone from his storage bag. Another grandmaster warns Shen Yi that Ma Guangshan has poor judgment and may be trying to unload a worthless treasure.
A Qing examines the stone and identifies it as a high-grade spirit root—the True Yang Qilin Stone. However, it has been contaminated by Killing Intent, and the Huang Family of Twin Creek Mountain failed to remove it. Because its restoration is uncertain, the stone is difficult to value. Ma Guangshan, having lost nearly everything, desperately hopes to exchange it for even a mid-grade spirit root. A Qing estimates that the stone, along with Ma Guangshan’s robe and pendant, is worth roughly the price of Shen Yi’s Dragonflame Jade Ganoderma.
Shen Yi chooses to deal fairly rather than exploit Ma Guangshan’s desperation. He trades the Dragonflame Jade Ganoderma for the contaminated spirit root without haggling. When Ma Guangshan strips off his robe and pendant to complete the exchange, Shen Yi lets him keep his clothes as a loan to be settled later. Deeply moved, Ma Guangshan thanks him sincerely.
The transaction astonishes the surrounding cultivators. Though the stone is an undesirable and difficult-to-sell treasure, Shen Yi’s willingness to trade fairly—and even extend credit—causes others to view him as trustworthy. Several cultivators begin considering whether they might safely reveal and sell their own treasures to him.
Character Developments and Interactions
- Shen Yi demonstrates fairness, restraint, and generosity, strengthening his reputation among the cultivators.
- A Qing proves to be an exceptionally skilled treasure appraiser, accurately identifying the stone’s origin, condition, and uncertain value.
- Chen Zhong remains protective of Shen Yi, preventing strangers from approaching too closely while Shen Yi is injured.
- Ma Guangshan is revealed to be impoverished and desperate, but not necessarily dishonest. His gratitude deepens after Shen Yi treats him with dignity.
- The surrounding grandmasters shift from suspicion and curiosity toward trust and willingness to engage with Shen Yi.
Significant Themes
- Reputation and trust: Shen Yi’s fair conduct matters as much as his strength in attracting future allies and transactions.
- Power and influence: Despite appearing weak and injured, Shen Yi commands respect because of his actions in the cave estate.
- Desperation and dignity: Ma Guangshan’s humiliation highlights the vulnerability of even powerful cultivators, while Shen Yi’s generosity preserves his dignity.
- Value beyond usefulness: The True Yang Qilin Stone is objectively precious but practically undesirable, showing the difference between intrinsic value and market value.
