"This was, after all, the place where your mother once worked. Come back and visit often when you have time."
Perhaps because he had known his mother, Wang Yichu put on no airs, merely reminiscing endlessly about the past.
From him, Chen Wu also learned how his mother had become the youngest precinct squad captain back then.
But now, that record had been broken by his sister, along with the record for the youngest station chief.
"Your generation has it much better than we did back then. You have freedom. When your mother and I were young, teachers gave us a little basic guidance, and the rest was up to us to figure out ourselves. There weren't even any supplementary pills, and we had to find places with facilities to help us train on our own."
"To learn a weapon, we'd simply pick up a branch from the ground and make do. Those with better conditions might make themselves a wooden saber or wooden sword."
"Unlike you kids now, with all kinds of pills supplied and martial arts schools providing every sort of weapon."
"Uncle Wang is right."
The two chatted for a short while before Gu Yuyue came over. "Director Wang, the car is ready."
"Yuyue, how many times have I told you? Address me by my title at work. In private, just call me Uncle Wang."
After correcting her, Wang Yichu did not linger any longer. "I still have meetings at several other precincts this afternoon, so I won't stay. Yuyue, you've only just taken office, so there's more to deal with. Once you get familiar with things, it'll be fine. If there's anything you don't understand, call your uncle and ask."
"Got it, Uncle Wang. Let me see you off."
"No need."
After Director Wang left, Gu Yuyue placed one hand behind her back and asked, "Xiao Wu, what did Director Wang tell you?"
Chen Wu answered honestly, "Uncle Wang just told me about Mother's time at the station."
"That makes sense. Uncle Wang worked with Mother for many years. When the beast tide broke out, he was responsible for holding back the ferocious beasts coming from another direction. Mother died from exhaustion, and Uncle Wang was gravely wounded and nearly died. So many years have passed, yet he still hasn't forgotten."
"Ah... it wasn't just Uncle Wang. Of everyone who took part in that battle, who could forget?"
"If Chen Wu's mother hadn't risked her life to stop the beast tide and buy time for the main force's reinforcements, creating the opportunity for heavy firepower to wipe out the ferocious beasts, the consequences would have been unthinkable once those beasts charged into the residential district."
Gu Yuyue voiced the plans she had originally made for Chen Wu. "If you hadn't awakened a special physique, then after taking the martial arts exam, you would have come to the station under his arrangements to do the work you're doing now."
Chen Wu was rather surprised. "Ah?"
"What do you mean, 'ah'? Your mother gave her life. If they didn't arrange a job for you, her old colleagues and comrades-in-arms would feel too ashamed to face her."
After speaking of the past, Gu Yuyue remembered something. "Right, during these past few days at the station, you must have heard about that person who recently appeared, right?"
Chen Wu assessed him in a half-joking tone. "Yeah, I heard. That person's strength is no less than mine."
Gu Yuyue's mouth twitched as she laughed. "If you hadn't been right under my nose this whole time, I would've almost thought that person was you."
Chen Wu said solemnly, "Sis, I'll tell you the truth. That Zhu Huang is actually me. I'm done pretending. I'm coming clean. When are you going to settle my points?"
Amused by him, Gu Yuyue took out the lunchbox she had hidden behind her back. "You only know how to crack wise with your sister. I knew you hadn't eaten, so I brought this from the cafeteria. Hurry up and eat."
Chen Wu grinned ingratiatingly. "Big Sister is the best."
"Eat up."
"By the way, Sis, what did you discuss in your meeting? It took so long."
"Nothing much. Just some speeches from the leaders, and Zhu Huang's future destination."
"Mm, this is already the seventeenth place."
Zhu Wu, dressed as usual in black clothes and a black mask, stood within a secluded courtyard.
The surroundings were a complete mess, with unconscious criminals sprawled everywhere.
After sending the information and location, he was about to leave when he suddenly halted.
A young man stood atop the courtyard wall with his arms folded, clearly having arrived some time ago.
The secondary body, having received Chen Wu's message, knew this was someone from the Dragon Guard. He immediately slipped into character. "Hm? You have accomplices?"
This Dragon Guard member also intended to test him. He said coldly, "The famed 'Undying Vermilion Emperor' of Jincheng has captured so many of my subordinates. Did you think this would end so easily?"
Zhu Wu went along with it. "Ha. I just hope your strength isn't as disappointing as your subordinates'."
"Kid, you've got some nerve!"
At the slightest disagreement, the young man struck with both palms. His force was vast and surging, fully displaying the cultivation of a seventh-rank martial artist.
Zhu Wu neither fled nor dodged, meeting his opponent's palm force head-on.
At their first exchange, Zhu Wu was driven back, his feet plowing two deep furrows into the ground.
"Now this is somewhat interesting."
Though he had lost ground, Zhu Huang's fighting spirit instead surged skyward.
Two months ago, he had not even possessed the strength to fight back against a seventh-rank martial artist.
Now, he could already contend with one.
"Kid, your skills aren't bad. No wonder you injured so many of my subordinates. Cripple one of your own arms, and I can consider sparing your life."
Zhu Wu paid no attention to the young man's words. He sank his mind and gathered his breath, erupting in an instant.
"Lightning Divine Leg: Lightning Sweeps the Sky!"
His speed abruptly soared. The young man only saw a blur before fierce leg force was already before him.
So fast!
Even as he silently marveled, the young man gathered his strength and blocked with a powerful palm. A huge force struck him, numbing his wrist and forcing him half a step back.
"A body-refining martial artist? Haoyuan Palm!"
Detecting that his opponent also cultivated the body-refining path, the man immediately put away his contempt. True qi billowed within him as he launched a dense barrage of powerful palm strikes.
"Lightning Divine Leg: Thunderous Might!"
Zhu Wu had anticipated it. His divine legs struck in succession, turning his opponent's palm force to his own use.
Then, his body sprang like a compressed spring. As he bent and straightened, he carried the momentum of soaring through the air, his Dragon-Subduing Divine Leg crashing straight down with awe-inspiring force.
"Dragon-Subduing Divine Leg: Dragon in the Nine Heavens!"
He had not expected his opponent to recover his qi so quickly or change techniques so fast. Unable to react in time, the young man could only forcefully gather his qi to resist. Does this kid not need to recover his qi?
He barely managed to withstand the kick, but before he could counterattack, Zhu Wu's leg techniques came again.
"Dragon-Subduing Divine Leg: Coiled Dragon Turns the River!"
The Dragon-Subduing Divine Leg was exquisitely intricate and ever-changing, and in Zhu Wu's hands, it was displayed to the fullest.
One move contained two forms, both legs striking together. His left foot intercepted his opponent's right arm, while his right knee smashed fiercely into the man's chest.
Even with true qi protecting his body, the young man showed weakness for the first time. He staggered back rapidly, a thread of blood running from the corner of his mouth.
His true qi seems endless. Could he be a Heavenly Spirit Sacred Body? If that's true, I absolutely can't continue fighting him at close range.
As he caught his breath, the man's seventh-rank cultivation revealed itself. True qi poured forth in surging waves, and dense palm force filled the sky as it blasted toward Zhu Wu from afar. "Haoyuan Thousand-Hand Palm!"
"Lightning Divine Leg: Serpentine Lightning Step!"
