"My path is complete."
Huang Bai slowly spoke those four words. His voice was not loud, yet it carried an indescribable sense of exhilaration.
His corpse liberation was complete, and his flesh had been reborn.
What surprised him even more was that the symptoms of Jade Eyes and Square Pupils in his physical body had also faded away, leaving only his soul with that strange trait.
The pill poison that had plagued him day and night was thoroughly cleansed away as the Flower of the Other Shore bloomed. He no longer had to worry that his body would collapse before anything else.
He opened his mouth and exhaled lightly.
A dark-gold inner pill flew from his mouth and hovered in midair, spinning rapidly. Black radiance intertwined with pale gold across its surface, faintly carrying a sense of liveliness.
Huang Bai looked up at the pill, the corners of his lips lifting slightly.
"It's become mine now."
This was truly an unexpected delight.
The external pill had transformed into an inner pill, and the inner pill was no longer merely medicine. It had truly become connected to his own vital aura, becoming part of his body.
Huang Bai raised a hand, and the inner pill slowly fell back into his palm.
"This is good too. I won't need to first draw upon medicinal power when casting spells. I can directly activate the inner pill. Much more convenient."
He calmed himself and began sorting through the changes after his corpse liberation.
According to ancient texts, ordinary Corpse-Liberated Immortals cast away their physical forms and retain only their souls, gaining three hundred and sixty-five years of yin lifespan. Once that lifespan ran out, they would either disperse into nothingness or enter reincarnation and begin anew.
But he was different.
Huang Bai lowered his head and looked at his palm, slowly curling it into a fist.
"My soul's lifespan is bound to my physical body."
As long as his body lived, so would his soul.
He had essentially given up an independent yin lifespan in exchange for a path where life and soul cultivated together.
His soul could leave his body, yet his body had not been discarded. That was what he had truly wanted.
After testing it for a while, Huang Bai quickly reached a conclusion.
"My soul can remain outside my body for two incense sticks, about half an hour. That's enough."
Half an hour might not sound like much, but in a life-and-death battle, it was already enough to determine many things.
A soul outside the body was shapeless and invisible, unafraid of bullets, and could still cast spells as usual.
For Huang Bai, that was enough.
What he had always feared most was never fierce ghosts, but the firearms and artillery of this world. Now that his greatest weakness had been remedied, the situation had immediately changed.
Huang Bai picked up his phone and checked the messages Huang Yaozu and the others had sent.
Before separating, they had agreed that no matter where they were, they would send their coordinates once, in case something really happened and they could not even find one another.
Comparing the coordinates against the map, Huang Bai roughly confirmed their location before turning and leaving the cave.
"It's time to find them."
A village at the foot of a mountain in the Chiang Mai countryside.
The van rattled all the way toward the village.
The guide sat in the front, talking nonstop.
"This place is called Seven Graves. Legend says seven ancient high monks are buried beneath it, each one possessing tremendous magical power. The most powerful master here now is Tongtian King."
Huang Yaozu, Zhi Gang, and Li Guoqiang sat in the back seat. None of them showed much expression, merely nodding perfunctorily from time to time.
"Tongtian King is very famous in Thailand. People from across the region come specifically to worship him. Quite a few major bosses and important figures from Hong Kong have dealings with him too. You people are lucky this time."
They had fled all the way to Thailand, yet their pursuers had never stopped. Those who could chase them here were either ghosts or dogs raised by ghosts.
But because of that, they had followed the trail to a clue. The Tongtian King here had deep connections with Hong Kong.
Before long, a pointed-roof Buddhist temple appeared in the distance.
The temple's eaves curved high, and several naga serpent deity statues stood on either side of its gate. Their serpentine bodies coiled beneath them, their heads raised as though about to take flight. They looked magnificent, yet carried an eerie, sinister air.
Tourists from every direction came in an endless stream, and the incense offerings were flourishing.
After just one glance, Zhi Gang felt somewhat uncomfortable.
He had always felt that although some temples in Thailand appeared prosperous with worshippers, there was always an indescribable yin aura beneath the surface.
The three pretended to worship the statues, then spotted an old monk in orange robes standing beneath a corridor in the distance, preaching scriptures to worshippers.
Zhi Gang narrowed his eyes, studied him for a moment, and murmured, "That old thing is a ghost."
"Stay here first," Huang Yaozu said quietly. "We'll make our move tonight."
The three paid to stay in the temple.
After night fell, the wind gradually rose, and the entire temple became eerily quiet.
The three changed into black outfits, carrying ritual swords on their backs and pistols at their waists as they silently made their way deeper into the temple.
The corridors overlapped in layer after layer, sandalwood incense lingering through the covered walkways.
Just as they passed a corner, footsteps suddenly sounded nearby.
Zhi Gang immediately gave them a look.
Without hesitation, Huang Yaozu lunged forward, clapped a hand over the other person's mouth and nose, then slit his throat with a single swipe of his dagger.
The man did not even have time to struggle before his body went limp and collapsed to the ground.
Huang Yaozu was no longer the policeman he had once been. Their journey of escape had long since forced a ruthless edge out of him. When it was time to act, he was more decisive than anyone.
Before long, the three reached the rear hall.
The moment they entered, a heavy stench of blood struck them head-on.
By the dim light, they saw the scene inside. All three of their faces changed.
Stone platforms had been arranged throughout the hall.
Women's corpses lay atop the platforms, their abdomens split open in bloody wounds.
Even Huang Yaozu, who had seen countless murder scenes, felt his scalp go numb at the sight.
Zhi Gang clenched his teeth.
"These beasts..."
He had long heard that some Southeast Asian black arts used women and children in their rituals, but witnessing such a scene with his own eyes was still horrifying beyond belief.
These ghosts, and everyone who worked for them, all deserved to die.
Just then, the lights suddenly flared to life.
Bang!
Hidden doors on both sides opened at once, and gunmen poured out in a swarm.
"An ambush!" Huang Yaozu reacted the fastest, throwing himself at the other two and shoving them aside. "Find cover!"
Bang bang bang!
Muzzle flashes erupted wildly. Bullets swept past the three men's heads, striking the stone pillars and sending sparks flying.
Using the shadows and obstacles for cover, the three quickly scattered and narrowly avoided the barrage.
Deep in the rear hall, several men in suits stood beside Tongtian King, every one of them cold-faced.
Tongtian King folded his hands into his sleeves, his tone unhurried. "What a pity. You almost got caught. You were too impatient."
The leading ghost beside him sneered. "It doesn't matter. They can't escape. The Ghost King has already given the order. Even if we chase them to the ends of the earth, we must chop these people to pieces."
As soon as he finished speaking, a roar came from outside the temple.
Thump thump thump!
Several helicopters had already risen into the air, their searchlights sweeping back and forth. In the distance, vehicle headlights lit up one after another as a large force closed in.
"Let's go." Tongtian King shook his sleeves. "This old monk will go watch the excitement too."
With that, he and the fierce ghost leader boarded a helicopter.
Hundreds of gunmen began advancing through the forest, their encirclement tightening with every step.
Zhi Gang and the other two rushed into the mountains, only to discover firelight and footsteps in every direction. There was nowhere left to go.
Inside the helicopter, the leader grabbed a loudspeaker and shouted into the forest.
"Huang Bai, Huang Yaozu, you people are now like rats crossing the street. I'll give you one final chance. Hand over the secret and come out obediently to die."
"Otherwise, not only will you die, we'll nail you to the pillar of shame. From now on, everyone in the world will only remember you as lunatics and murderers. No one will know what you were trying to do."
After saying that, he burst into loud laughter.
Yet the forest remained silent.
The leader snorted coldly and jumped from the helicopter with Tongtian King.
"You're courting death."
A vicious glint flickered in his eyes, his ghostly form appearing and vanishing.
Today, they would not only kill these people, but also trample them into the mud. They would let every living person still thinking of resisting see what happened to those who opposed ghosts.
More than two hundred gunmen held their weapons and pressed forward inch by inch.
Bullets crisscrossed through the air, nearly sealing off the entire forest ahead. The moment Zhi Gang and the others dared show themselves, they would be riddled with bullets.
The leader was certain of victory.
They possessed not only guns and artillery, but also the ghosts' ability to possess people. There was no way they could lose.
Just then, the sky suddenly changed.
The east began to pale.
The white of dawn slowly spread as the darkness of night gradually retreated.
Then a streak of golden light suddenly flared at the horizon.
That golden light came too quickly. It was unnaturally bright, so bright that it made people panic. Whether they were gunmen in the forest or people in the helicopters overhead, all of them instinctively looked up.
Then they saw a sight they would never forget for the rest of their lives.
The morning glow spread across the sky, and the blazing sun was just about to rise.
High in the air, a figure stood suspended in the void.
His long hair lashed wildly in the high-altitude winds, his Daoist robes billowing. His left hand formed a spell sign, while his right held a sword.
Jade Eyes and Square Pupils. Golden light flowed around his body, carrying an oppressive majesty that made it hard to breathe, like a deity from an ancient painting brought to life.
He stood there in midair, imposing and untouchable.
Like an immortal. Like a celestial being. Like a judgment that had finally descended upon this world.
Everyone in the mountains was stunned senseless.
The gunmen held their weapons, but their hands began shaking uncontrollably.
Those in the helicopters froze as well, even their breathing slowing by half a beat.
Not even Huang Yaozu and Li Guoqiang could think clearly at the sight.
Zhi Gang froze at first, then seemed to ignite from within, laughing with near-manic joy.
"Hahahaha!"
"He did it! Huang Bai did it!"
"What Ghost King? He's nothing!"
"From today onward, he is the new Wong Tai Sin!"
He laughed until tears streamed down his face. The frustration that had been trapped in his chest for decades finally burst out in that moment.
An immortal had descended into the mortal world.
At last, an immortal had descended into the human world.
The ghosts' greatest advantage was simply that they were not human, unafraid of bullets and unconstrained by flesh and blood. But now, this side had one too.
Humans could not fight ghosts.
Then let an immortal fight them.
