Background
Huang Bai was originally a mountaineering enthusiast who attempted the Aotai Line. Caught in lethal weather and unable to distinguish illusion from reality, he took shelter in a mountain temple. He awoke in the ancient Heavenly Dao Temple, where he no longer felt hunger, thirst, fatigue, heat, or cold, and discovered that he could leave only when the Heavenly Dao Talisman Edict issued a task. 2
Rather than despair over his apparent death or displacement, Huang Bai decided to treat it as a new life and pursue its “bizarre and dazzling” adventures. His earliest priority was overcoming the weakness of an ordinary mortal body, leading him to study the external-alchemy texts, elixirs, and ritual sword found in his suitcase. 2
The Heavenly Dao Talisman Edict sends him into different worlds with specific missions. In his first documented mission, he uses foreknowledge and modern police firepower to stop Xie Yali’s corpse-liberation ritual, then returns to the temple after receiving confirmation that the demon extermination was complete. 1
Huang Bai’s cultivation remains centered on external alchemy even after he acquires talismans, spirit-soldier arts, and thunder magic. He considers spells to be external methods and repeatedly seeks ancient pills, mineral medicines, and alchemical inheritances to strengthen both his body and his path toward immortality. 51 57 128
Appearance
Huang Bai’s appearance changes alongside his cultivation, gradually giving him the bearing of an immortal rather than an ordinary Daoist. 7 100 166
- In his earlier travels, he wears green Daoist robes, keeps his long hair tied behind him, and has faint jade-green eyes described as cold and ghostly. 7
- As Huang Tian, he commonly appears in yellow robes with white, feather-like hair, golden vertical pupils, and a semi-transparent divine soul body. 100 106
- After completing his Golden Elixir and Five-Element Thunder Qi, he develops a bird-crested crown, white wings, and spreading feathers. 134 152
- He can alter his unusual features to assume the appearance of an ordinary person when discretion is needed. 76
Personality
Huang Bai is notably composed when confronted by the supernatural. He remains calm during tomb crises, ghost attacks, and occult threats that overwhelm those around him, usually assessing the situation before acting. 7 57 88
He is strategic and practical. He uses foreknowledge, police force, artillery, formations, technology, talismans, and alliances as circumstances require rather than relying only on Daoist arts. 1 69 70 101
Huang Bai is compassionate toward victims of ghosts and curses, offering Yang Feng employment and shelter, purifying the resentful remains in King Xian’s tomb, and giving the twin vicious ghosts a path out of torment as spirit soldiers. 42 46 70 However, he can also be ruthless in pursuit of a necessary objective, including killing criminals to fulfill the five sacrifices required for corpse liberation. 18
Although he accepts reverence as Huang Tian, he does not intend to permanently rule the worlds he saves. When leaving the First Commandment world, he explicitly entrusts humanity’s future to the Demon-Slaying Bureau instead of attempting to eradicate every future vengeful ghost himself. 106
Abilities & Skills
External Alchemy
Huang Bai’s primary foundation is external alchemy: refining and consuming mineral, herbal, ghostly, and ancient medicines to alter his body and cultivate supernatural power. 2 51 128
- The Five Zhi Pill produces potent hallucinations and was used to temper his divine sense. 2
- Powdered Five Zhi Pills can be dispersed through burning talismans to trap ordinary opponents in shared illusions shaped by visualization. 9
- His inner elixirs enhance his physical ability beyond ordinary humans and can be nourished through slain ghosts or refined from rare materials. 15 23
- The Golden Elixir grants bodily flight and advances him into a Feathered Person. 134
- He refines specialized internal pills, including the Six-One Yang Water Pill for thunder arts and five thunder pills for the Five-Element Thunder Qi cycle. 147 152
Thunder Arts
Thunder arts are Huang Bai’s principal means of destroying ghosts, demons, and other yin-aligned entities. 86 97
- Palm Thunder — Generated from internally cultivated Taiji Thunder Qi rather than borrowed divine power. 86 93
- Azure Dragon Lightning — A three-foot bolt that instantly destroys the Yin-Fire Ghost King. 97
- Taiji Sky-Shattering Thunder — An enhanced form of Palm Thunder created by re-refining the Six-One Yang Water Pill. 147
- Five Thunder Talismans — Talismans inscribed on the body that repel ghosts passively and can release invisible yin lightning through hand seals. 84
- Thunder arts are particularly dangerous to soul bodies; Huang Bai recognizes that true lightning could scatter his own projected soul. 86
Soul Projection and Corpse Liberation
Huang Bai can separate his soul from his body without becoming a conventional possessing ghost. 19 21
- His liberated soul is immune to ordinary blades, firearms, and bullets. 18
- He can leave his body for up to half an hour after completing corpse liberation. 19
- His possession method does not seize another person’s body or harm innocents. 21
- He can pass through walls while in soul form and later employs the Wall-Piercing Curse even while acting in the material world. 65 101
Talismans, Rituals, and Divine Sword Arts
Huang Bai uses talismans and ritual techniques for exorcism, healing, concealment, restraint, and combat. 8 42 98
- Vajra Divine Sword Technique — Enhances his ritual sword with the Vajra Divine Sword Edge-Opening Incantation, allowing it to cut through iron-like materials. 2 8
- Solar Curse — A curse Huang Bai becomes able to cast nearly at will after repeated ghost-hunting. 15
- Life-Urging Talismans — Send Demon Children to the underworld. 83
- Healing talismans — Heal severe wounds and force bullets out of Huang Yaozu, Zhi Gang, and Li Guoqiang. 97
- Ghost-Sealing Talismans — Taught to the Demon-Slaying Bureau alongside combat talismans. 98
- Yellow Springs Five-Lamp Altar — Purifies and delivers wandering souls and wild ghosts to the underworld. 148
Feng Shui and Formation Arts
Huang Bai studies geomancy as both a tomb-raiding discipline and a means of altering spiritual terrain. 53 160
- He possesses the Sixteen-Character Yin-Yang Feng Shui Secret Art, including the completed Transformation, Yin, and Yang volumes. 123 160
- He can identify feng shui traps, reveal murder sites concealed by ritual layouts, and direct artillery fire according to a mountain’s terrain and qi. 46 69
- He uses Liu Bowen’s dragon-slaying art to sever a flood dragon’s connection to Changbai Mountain’s earth vein. 163
- The Five-Element Formation Disc can restrain hostile entities; General Black Fiend later improves it so Huang Bai no longer needs to cripple a formation setter or assign a separate operator. 83 149
Spirit Army Altar
Huang Bai raises and commands ghosts as yin soldiers through his Spirit Army Altar. 32 37
- The altar refines yin energy and fallen supernatural entities into soldiers and strengthens its yin soil with defeated ghosts. 37 104
- His documented spirit soldiers and generals include Yaksha, the Twin Yin Spirits, the Girl in Red, and King Xian. 98 100
- Yaksha is summoned through the Yaksha Inner Elixir and fights with extensible shackles capable of restraining ghost dharma bodies. 23 32 38
- Huang Bai can order his yin soldiers to guard his physical body while his soul operates elsewhere. 159
Heavenly Dao Temple and World Travel
The Heavenly Dao Talisman Edict links Huang Bai to the ancient temple and assigns him missions across worlds. 1 2
- He becomes master of the Heavenly Dao Temple after returning from the Resident Evil world. 40
- Preaching to the Myriad Worlds and the All-Heavens Ritual Altar expand the temple’s role across worlds. 40
- Incense offerings allow communication with followers in other worlds, as demonstrated through the God-Summoning Incense. 51
- Once his cultivation reaches a world’s peak, part of that world can manifest within the temple; the Ming World becomes Ming Hall, complete with naturally occurring alchemical materials. 164
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Heavenly Dao Talisman Edict — Invisible golden talisman on his left forearm that issues missions, returns him to the temple, and enables travel between worlds. 1 2
- Ritual sword — A three-foot ancient sword used with the Vajra Divine Sword Technique. 2 6
- Five-Element Formation Disc — Formation artifact used to restrain hostile supernatural entities; later improved by General Black Fiend. 83 149

Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Missions and Ghost Hunting
Huang Bai begins as an outsider using the Heavenly Dao Talisman Edict’s assignments to acquire cultivation resources and supernatural knowledge. His early travels establish his use of external alchemy, illusion-based Five Zhi Pills, sword arts, and foreknowledge. 1 2 9
In Hong Kong, he joins Zhi Gang, Huang Yaozu, and Li Guoqiang against vicious ghosts. After obtaining corpse liberation, he confronts the Ghost King and establishes the original Demon-Slaying Bureau. 18 19 21
Temple Master and Spirit-Soldier Cultivator
After defeating the Great Black Buddha Mother, Huang Bai gains the Yaksha Inner Elixir and adopts the Spirit Army Altar path. He later becomes master of the Heavenly Dao Temple, establishing temples and lineages across worlds rather than operating alone. 23 32 40 51
Huang Tian’s Return
Huang Bai returns to the First Commandment world after three years and finds the Demon-Slaying Bureau near collapse. He kills Ghost Kings, heals his surviving companions, openly exposes the existence of vicious ghosts, and rebuilds the Bureau as an international organization. 96 97 100 101
He ultimately leaves the world’s defense to its people, supplying them with ghost detectors, talismans, the First Commandment Sword, and institutional support rather than attempting to eliminate every future ghost. 106
Yellow Heaven Lineage and Feathered Ascension
In the Great Tang Tianbao era, Huang Bai becomes master of the Golden Register Daoist Sanctuary, founds the Yellow Heaven Lineage, and leads a revival of Daoist alchemy and talisman arts. 123 124
After more than thirty years in that world, he completes his Golden Elixir, flies with his physical body, and leaves Zhao Guizhen the means to preserve the lineage. 134
Later Cultivation
Huang Bai continues to refine thunder arts, obtain the completed Sixteen-Character Yin-Yang Feng Shui Secret Art, and develop toward a full Feathered Person transformation. 147 152 160
By the time he returns to Bottle Mountain, he can fly with white wings, command powerful talismans and formations, and is recognized by Hu Bayi’s group as an Earth Immortal-like figure. 164 166
