From what Wu Pifu understood of this dynasty, it resembled the Ming Dynasty, yet differed from it in vague ways. For example, the capital's military forces were divided into three branches. The Imperial Forest Army operated independently, answered only to imperial authority, and had separate barracks. It guarded only the imperial palace and could also be called the Custodes.

The remaining two branches were the Loyal Brave Army and the City Guard Army. The City Guard Army was a local garrison force. Even though the capital's City Guard Army was somewhat different, it was not truly a field army. Thus, the so-called Capital Military Camp specifically referred to the Loyal Brave Army. It commanded three battalions: the Five Guards Battalion, the Cavalry Battalion, and the Divine Machine Battalion. Together, they were known as the Loyal Brave Army, the finest and strongest field force of the dynasty.

By rights, Lin Daiyu had been granted the post of instructor of the eight hundred thousand Custodes. Eight hundred thousand was merely a nominal figure; the entire capital did not even possess an army of eight hundred thousand men. This so-called instructor of the eight hundred thousand Custodes was therefore only an empty title. Even if she truly had been a Custodes instructor, she would still have ranked far below actual commanders. Such instructors were low-level military training officers, hired technical specialists of a sort, only a tiny step above common soldiers.

To put it plainly, the Emperor's move had been a test from the start. The title of instructor of the eight hundred thousand Custodes was more an expression of intent—a question: could the Lin siblings join the army? Were they willing to serve the court? It was merely a test.
