Put simply, once a Nen user's strength reached a certain threshold, their capacity for Nen memories might already be full, but their existing Nen abilities would continue growing stronger as their Nen did. Their abilities would also undergo all kinds of changes, and the greatest influence on them came from the user's imagination—or, more precisely, any thought in their mind. Even a passing whim or stray thought they weren't aware of could affect their Nen ability, causing it to change in strange ways.
If a Nen ability simply stopped working or weakened, the danger wouldn't be too great. But if a developed ability manifested in a bizarre way, or its effects grew stronger out of control, it could kill or mutate anyone in its reach, including its user. That was the truth behind Thought Overload.
