Background

The Norse gods originated in Northern Europe. According to Hela, they became guardians of Earth, which they call Midgard. Odin moved the pantheon to Asgard and used technology left by the ancient “Immortals” to create the Bifrost, making the realm a frontline defense for Earth 576. Carter Slade offers a more speculative account of this history and cautions that even Odin may not know all of it 1013.

Asgard’s strength declined as the Runes sustaining the World Tree waned. Odin faced both that decline and the prophecy of Ragnarok while trying to prepare a successor 1049 1207. After Freyr destroyed the Bifrost, the Ancient One restored it with the Time Stone 1323.

Realm and Society

• Summit City — Asgard’s city and royal seat. Civilians shelter within a mountain during Ronan’s invasion 1378 1389.
• Royal palace and throne — The throne connects its occupant to Asgard’s heart. When Hela takes it, she gains control over functions ranging from access to the Bifrost controls to Summit City’s streetlights 1390.
• Energy supply — Immense elemental energy beneath the palace powers the realm and supports a technological civilization distinct from Earth’s 1390.
• Military tradition — Asgard is described as a city of soldiers: men across its households have served, and some veterans fought alongside Odin across the Nine Realms 1373.

Defenses

• Bifrost — Asgard’s most powerful weapon, able to strike throughout the Solar System. It also transports people, though large troop deployments still rely on spaceships 1048 1127.
• Fleet and ground forces — Asgard fields golden ships, armored warriors and Berserkers; its warriors use protective energy shields and excel in close combat 1378 1347 1946.
• Valkyries — Known as “Odin’s sword and Asgard’s shield,” they return to public view after Hela awakens their preserved bodies and souls 1389.

Major Conflicts and Succession

• Kree war — Odin makes Nidavellir the frontline, intending to draw the Kree into a ground battle while Thor intercepts their vanguard and Loki organizes defenses 1048 1207.
• Ronan’s invasion — Ronan attacks Asgard through a space-time rift, inflicting heavy civilian losses. Frigga commands the fleet, Hela holds the Bifrost with her Death Army, and older residents organize evacuations in Summit City 1378.
• Change of ruler — Following the invasion, Odin relinquishes his Godhead and Hela takes the throne. She later leads her army to Nidavellir, where a victory helps win the Asgardian soldiers’ support 1386 1390 1406 1407.
• Restoration of the realm’s power — Surtur’s Heart of Lava is returned to Asgard’s foundations, restoring their power 1392.
• Closer ties with Earth — Hela proposes opening Asgard to Earth. Later, Asgard supplies Earth with energy weapons and deploys Berserkers to Scandinavia during an alien threat 1392 1946.
