The conflict between mutants and humans had existed for ages; no one could say exactly how the feud began.

Magneto's Brotherhood had always been committed to expanding the mutant population, with the ultimate goal of replacing human rule with mutant rule.

Most interestingly, Magneto—the Brotherhood's leader, known as either Max Eisenhardt or Erik Lehnsherr—and Professor X Charles Xavier, leader of the X-Men, were good friends, former teammates and partners!
