History
Origins
The Weird Game's ultimate origin is revealed through Tan Shuchang's time-displaced journey. In a modern world devoid of immortal Dao power, strange objects can pull living people into games and kill them in reality if they die within those games. Tan gathers such objects and seals them into a separate space. In a subsequent world, he discovers the Weird Game, establishes conditions for players to enter and leave, and adds a survival-oriented “special training” period before players enter its dangerous space. 269
The Weird Game world's original foundation was a piece of strange soil from the Netherworld. Dao Ancestor Shixin had created the world and begun fusing it with the Weird Game, but the process was delayed when the All-Ghosts Heavenly Dao descended upon the Primordial Heaven Realm. 272
Initial Contact with Tan Shuchang
Tan Shuchang is selected due to an apparent loading error. His initial player panel lists him at Ding Nine with Jia One resistance in malice, pollution, destruction, and supernatural phenomena, before the system cancels his adaptation period and transports him directly to a female-dormitory instance. 1
The Game later acknowledges that erroneous data has prevented Tan from connecting normally. It cancels his planned compensation and gives him an Impermanence Token instead. 19
Langshou Ghost City
After Tan provides wandering souls as compensation for fierce ghosts, the Earth-Destroying King grants him the title of Lord of Langshou Ghost City. The position gives him broad authority over the city's fierce ghosts, one-tenth of its production, and the ability to alter basic rules in instances within or around the city. 20
Langshou Ghost City serves players progressing toward B-rank Super Player status. Its lord is expected to organize players' unstable ghost arts and ensure enough B-rank players survive to reach the ghost city associated with A-rank players. 21
Tan later turns the city into a player cultivation center by introducing Power Pills, bronze knife currency, and methods that reward players for hunting fierce ghosts. 119
Migration and Reconfiguration
The Game migrates when it can no longer safely resist the descent of additional All-Ghosts Heavenly Dao lineages. Its three domains can resist one descending lineage together, but a second forces relocation. Each migration requires the Game to select players anew. 132
After entering a world where humans and ghosts share one body, it begins inviting that world's strongest beings to fight its Yin Gods and fierce ghosts, apparently to determine the world's supernatural limits. 148
Its laws later shatter, and living cultivators transformed from Yin-God vicious ghosts are sent elsewhere. The Law of Greed's remaining connection to Tan restores the world's most basic functions. 206
Fusion with the Ghost-Path World
Tan uses his authority to connect the Weird Game world to a dim world where the ghost path flourishes. The Game displays apparent delight, strips Tan of temporary control for being too slow, and rapidly synchronizes the two worlds. 221
Following the merger, its former adaptation period and resurrection opportunities no longer apply. A new player marketplace appears, while yin virtue and Yin Spirit Power become central parts of its society. 222
Systems and Mechanics
Player Selection and Adaptation
- The Game can select people across worlds through invitations, including Tan's accidental cross-dimensional selection. 1
- Its original adaptation period is designed to train players' courage and reactions around fierce ghosts without injuring them. 153
- After the adaptation period, players originally receive one opportunity to return to life. 95
- Following the fusion with the ghost-path world, new players no longer receive adaptation periods or resurrection opportunities. 222
- The Game can select ghosts as players as well as living people. 152
Instances and Advancement
- Player-offered sites become instances only when connected to severe murder cases or accidents involving at least a double-digit death toll. 12
- Such player-offered instances have no fixed rules, but their ghosts' upper strength limit is determined by the offering player's strength in life. 12
- Ding-rank player levels are recorded separately from the public A–D player grades; Tan begins at Ding Nine, advances to Ding Eight after one instance, and reaches Ding Six after his third instance. 1 6 13
- Grade D Rank One players require advancement ritual instances to reach Grade C. The Game may proactively create such an instance if no suitable one exists, often requiring many sacrifices. 7
- Grade C players need a final sacrifice and entry into a ghost city to become B-rank Super Players. 22
Player Interface
- Player panels show rank or level, four resistance categories, and later may display cultivation, lifespan, divine abilities, and system commentary. 1 13 221
- The resistance values represent the limits of a player's physical abilities within the Weird Game rather than their real-world physical condition. 6
- Tan can summon his panel at will after reaching Ding Six. 13
- The Game's official website records fast instance-clear times, player discussions, ghost information, and methods for upgrading killing rules. 54
- The official website offers no customer service. 91
Punishments and Privileges
- The Game punishes Tan for stealing property by restricting his game time and assigning tasks, while also granting the Impermanence Token. 19
- The Impermanence Token can make Tan a ghost constable; accepting that role requires additional tasks on every future entry. 19
- The Game temporarily allows Tan to bring wandering souls into an instance because he is compensating for property losses caused by taking fierce ghosts. 20
- When Tan refuses the “Accumulate Merit to Become a King” mission, the Game attempts to reset his level and strip Game-derived powers. Unable to detect such powers, it changes the punishment to guarding the No-Life Realm Prison for three days and elevates his city-lord authority if he survives. 78
Realms and Locations
- Bitter Buddha Realm — One of the Weird Game's three great realms. 79
- Deathless Realm — A graveyard of fierce ghosts formerly filled with dangerous wardens and prisoners; it becomes nearly empty after Tan captures many of its inhabitants. 79
- Serpent Desire Realm — The domain connected to the Law of Greed and later ruled by Tan after he absorbs the Greed Venerable King. 121
- Langshou Ghost City — A ghost city initially lacking a ruler, later governed by Tan as Langshou King. 20 119
- Land Where Humans and Ghosts Coexist — An accessible layered area where fierce ghosts move without restriction and where entry consumes the entrant's own power or causes irreversible injury if power is insufficient. 13
Behavior and Apparent Agency
The Weird Game's behavior is inconsistent enough that Tan repeatedly questions whether it is truly alive. It can issue indifferent announcements, make compensation decisions, impose punishments, migrate for self-preservation, and apparently react with delight when it successfully connects to a suitable world. 1 19 132 221
It also operates multiple overlapping plotlines within major instances, distributing apparent benefits while concealing more difficult objectives. 97
Relationships
- Tan Shuchang — Initially selected through a data error; becomes a player, Lord of Langshou Ghost City, Langshou King Candidate, Lord of the Serpent Desire Realm, and ultimately the complete controller of the Weird Game world. 1 20 95 121 273
- Earth-Destroying King — Grants Tan the Lord of Langshou Ghost City position after judging his treatment of wandering souls. 20
- Black-Seeing King — Explains the Game's migration mechanism and later cooperates with Tan and the Earth-Destroying King as one of the three kings. 132
- Dong Dong — Becomes a player after the fusion with the ghost-path world; her panel records the divine ability “Summon the Lord of the Serpent Desire Realm.” 221
- Dao Ancestor Shixin — Created the world that later fused with the Weird Game from strange Netherworld soil. 272
- All-Ghosts Heavenly Dao — A hostile or destabilizing force whose descending lineages can compel the Weird Game to migrate. 132
