Early the next morning, Lin Chen bid Qian Renxue farewell. She saw him off at the gates of the imperial city without the empress's ceremonial procession, dressed only in casual clothes. Her golden hair draped over her shoulders, making her look like an ordinary woman seeing a friend off on a journey.
"Get some proper rest when you return to the academy." She stood in the morning light and looked at him. Her golden eyes held an inexplicable gentleness that had not been there yesterday.
"Once things are settled on your end, write to me. As for me... going to Spirit Hall to see her, there's no rush in the next day or two. I want to calm myself down first."
Lin Chen nodded. "All right. Once I'm done handling matters at the academy, I'll accompany you there."
Qian Renxue gave a soft hum and said nothing more. But after Lin Chen turned and walked several steps away, a low, gentle voice came from behind him. "Lin Chen."
He turned around. Qian Renxue stood there as the morning breeze lifted her golden hair. For an instant, her expression was utterly unguarded beneath the sunlight. "Thank you."
Lin Chen smiled without saying much. He waved, turned around, and vanished at the end of the long street.
